Chapter 2The Stranger You Love All addicts' stories are heartbreaking in their own unique ways. But if you hear enough of these stories, you begin to realize that they are also distressingly similar. They follow a predictable pattern of experimentation, addiction, and eventual loss of everything most of us hold dear, including family, home, job, and personal values. Addicts become estranged from the nonaddicted world and seem not to mind when they are reduced to circumstances that would be intolerable to almost anyone who is thinking clearly. My own daughter was a prime example. A heroin addict at age twenty-three, my daughter and her boyfriend, a fellow addict, were evicted from their apartment for not paying their rent. In the four months they had lived there, their apartment had become almost uninhabitable. The filthy bathroom contained a phone book that they used for toilet paper. The living room was a chaotic jumble of dirty dishes and soiled clothing and bedding. The bedroom floor was covered with animal feces from their cats and ferret. They eventually moved in with friends for a short time and then to the back of their car, a small station wagon. By that time they had lost or sold most of their possessions. Only a few items of clothing and some bedding remained. My daughter always wore the same long-sleeved shirt stained with sweat; the cuffs and sleeves were speckled with dots and streaks of blood. Her shoes smelled like rotten meat. Yet when I confronted her about her situation, she insisted that nothing was wrong. "A lot of people live in their cars, Mom," she said, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. "We're going to get a new apartment next week. This is not a big deal." She denied the addiction outright. As sickened as I was by her situation, I did not fully realize that I was dealing with someone who inhabited a different mental world than my own. Only later did I begin to see that we shared no common ground, that it was impossible for us to communicate because she had lost touch with everyday reality, and that my daughter had, in fact, become a stranger. Most families of addicts experience similar feelings about their loved one. They say such things as "I don't even know who he is anymore" and "I look into her eyes and it's like there's no one there." One mother of an addict said to me with tears in her eyes, "What a terrible disease this is. It takes away our kids." People sometimes claim that addicts have "lost their souls." What they mean is that the addicts no longer seem to care about anything but their drug of choice, that they have become untrustworthy, and that their value system seems bizarre or nonexistent. Families experience a tremendous sense of loss as they see their loved one, who once possessed certain defining characteristics such as a good sense of humor or a strong work ethic or an affectionate nature, lose these positive traits. Indeed, individuality deteriorates as the addict takes on behaviors that are typical of other addicts, behaviors that are aimed at achieving one end: the next high. Recognizable addictive behaviors, present to a greater or lesser degree in most addicts, emerge as addiction takes hold. They are the result of a subconscious process in which new thought patterns are adopted to facilitate addiction. Addicts do not consciously decide to change their behavior. Rather, the process of change occurs at a deeper level, a result of the marvelous human capacity to adapt to altered circumstances. The addicts, not realizing what is happening, begin to think and behave in ways that may have been foreign before the addiction took hold, but that now seem natural and even necessary. Their brains have been biologically and chemically altered. Families generally sense the changes in their loved one but do not fully appreciate the depth of those changes. They may continue to treat the addict as they have in the past, only to find their interactions with the addict increasingly confusing. They cannot find any solid ground in the changed relationship as the addict begins to exhibit a disturbing repertoire of addictive behaviors. Foremost among these addictive behaviors is denial. Denial It is not uncommon in our society to hear someone described as being "in denial." This condition is generally understood to mean that the person in question is unwilling or unable to face the truth about a particular circumstance. Who among us hasn't been in denial about something, whether it's our relationships, our diet, our spending habits, or some other troubling aspect of our lives? Many families of addicts, including myself, deny their loved one's addiction for a long time before circumstances force them to face it. Denial seems to be a natural human response to situations we are unready or unable to cope with. When applied to addiction, however, denial is taken to the extreme. Denial permeates all of addicts' thinking, blotting out reality and replacing it with a twisted perception that everything is other than what it is. The denial is most obvious when addicts are challenged to evaluate their own situation. They immediately deny that they have a problem and insist that they can control or stop their use of alcohol or other drugs whenever they choose. Denise, a secretary whose seventeen-year-old son was hooked on heroin, described talking to him about the problem: "At first he said I was crazy, that I was imagining things. He kept telling me to leave him alone. He was really angry. But a friend of his had told me he was addicted, so I kept after him. He finally admitted to snorting heroin 'a little bit' at parties and things like that. He acted like it was nothing. Then he started stealing money from my pocketbook. All that time I was confused because I felt things were bad, but he kept assuring me he had things under control. Then he sold his guitar, and I knew I couldn't go along with his denial anymore. I forced him to see a counselor. I found out he was shooting up four times a day. Even then, he still insisted he could stop anytime he wanted." Peggy, married to a police officer hooked on cocaine, faced a similar experience. "He was spending every cent he made on cocaine," she said. "He stopped paying the bills, stopped buying groceries, so I had to take on all the household expenses. I kept threatening to walk out on him, and he kept saying I was crazy. He didn't have a problem. He was just fine. You know something? I honestly think he believed it. I don't think he had a clue about what was happening to him." The pattern of denial that Peggy and Denise confronted is typical of most addicts. Denial is the mental mechanism that enables addicts to give up more and more of the things that are truly valuable in life in favor of an artificial and fleeting sense of well-being induced by a chemical. In other words, denial is the foundation of addiction, the fertile soil in which it grows and flourishes. Denial provides the comforting delusion that everything is all right, smoothing the way for addicts as they wind deeper into their downward spiral. A truism about addicts is that they will always deny their addiction or, if forced to admit it, they will minimize its depth. They consistently say such things as "I can stop any time I want" and "I only use it occasionally" and "I don't need help—there's nothing wrong." Even when everyone around them knows that addiction is destroying their lives, addicts will deny that they have a problem. The depth of their denial does not stop there. As addiction takes it inevitable toll, addicts will also deny the severity of the consequences. Even as their world crumbles around them, as everything of value is stripped away, they will claim that their losses are not of much consequence. Their entire belief system is altered by the power of denial. Jerry and Teresa, who had recently celebrated their thirtieth wedding anniversary, described their horror as their only daughter endured one tragedy after another without apparent concern. Their daughter was a nurse, a single mother in a committed relationship with her child's father. She became addicted to prescription drugs and lost her job. Soon afterward, she was arrested for forging prescriptions, then for shoplifting, and finally for prostitution. Over the course of several years, she spent many months in jail and lost her car, her apartment, and most of her possessions. Her boyfriend left her, and ultimately she lost custody of her child. "It wasn't until we were awarded custody of our grandchild that I finally realized just how sick her thinking had become," Teresa said. "As she was being led off to prison and we were raising her child, her only comment was 'Well, it's only for nine months. I don't see what you're making such a big deal about.' Nine months! Nine minutes would have been too long for me to endure a situation like that. But she didn't seem to get it." The power and importance of denial cannot be overstated when it comes to understanding addiction. Even when addicts are facing life on the streets or incarceration, they will deny that addiction is the root cause of their troubles. Their perception becomes so distorted by denial that they may be truly unable to comprehend the disaster that has befallen them. + + + Behaviors that are Symptomatic of Addiction In my experience, denial, dishonesty, and manipulation are the behaviors most fundamental to addiction. They are the behaviors addicts call on time and again in the all-consuming effort to get drugs, use drugs, and conceal the addiction from others. These behaviors become like second nature, helping the addiction take r...

I bought this book based on other people’s reviews. When you have a loved one struggling, you want to help and do something to ease their pain. I know you have to be careful in what is considered helping and being an enabler. This book breaks it down well with helpful tips for the addicts loved ones. I refer to it in my head often when dealing with my brother. The main tip that I refer to often is the chapter speaking about getting too wrapped up in the addicts life and neglecting your own. It’s easy to go down that path because you love them and it’s hard to watch them struggle but the author is right when they say you have to live your own life and the only person who can truly change an addicts life is the addict himself/herself. I agreed with all the tips in this book, they felt right even though it can be difficult to accept them. I feel comfortable following these tips, knowing it’s the right thing to do (or react or not react) when I am supporting or speaking or listening to my brother. I feel more at peace and cry a lot less when I refer to this book and I don’t dwell on my brothers problems as much as I used to but I do try to reach out to him and be positive and be a happy/stable influence on him as much as I can. I do not down talk to him or tell him what to do. If he asks for my advice, I give it to him....in a positive way.

As a newcomer to dealing with a loved one with an addition, I really needed this book to help me understand and navigate through. I thought that it was a lack of willingness on the part of an addict to want help. In a small way, desire to get clean is part of it, but reading this helped me look at the bigger picture. Most important, it help me remember I only have control of what I do, and navigate my feeling durning the process. Very well written and very helpful.

If you have a family member or loved one who is addicted to drugs or alcohol, and you don't know what to do about it, then you should definitely read "Addict in the Family: Stories of Loss, Hope, and Recovery" by Beverly Conyers. You may ask yourself: Did I cause the addiction? How could I have been so blind? Is there any hope? How can I help him/her get well? Is it possible to find peace of mind? Family members of addicts have very few choices to make and all too often it's the wrong ones. "Addict in the Family" can help you make the right choices. Families are the hidden victims of addiction, and they endure much mental anguish, guilt, and shame. Much of the suffering is rooted in the false belief that the addict has only himself to blame and that he could cure himself if he really wanted to. Despite all the begging, pleading, threatening, reasoning, and bribing the family members do, the addict will usually persist in his destruction. There are several informative chapters about the nature of addiction that includes tips on how to recognize the addict's chief tools: denial, dishonesty, and manipulation. These tools allow the addict to get drugs, continue using drugs, and help conceal the addiction, which absolutely cannot exist without these three behaviors. There are also biological explanations for why the addict can no longer experience the normal pleasures of life, and I like the way Conyers uses the example of Pavlov's dogs to explain how certain people, places, and things can trigger intense craving in the recovering addict. And Conyers explains why the family member must seek recovery also. Most family members falsely believe they shouldn't have to do anything because they are not the one with the problem. But the prolonged stress and constant worry and shame can affect the overall health of the family member. They've been found to suffer from a long list of physical and mental maladies and in the end can be just as sick as the addict, and therefore, should work the twelve steps of Al-Anon. As the author points out, if changing habits, attitudes, and desires were only a matter of identifying the problem and fixing it, then there would be no need for the self-help movement, psychoanalysis, addiction treatment programs, or books like this one. Too many families suffer because of this disease and know next to nothing about it. And they often make the wrong choices in an attempt to fix a problem that can't be fixed. Getting educated about addiction is a must if families truly want to help themselves and their loved one recover. Conyers, who is also the mother of a heroin addict, can guide you through the minefield of addiction to real recovery with this informative and insightful book.David Allan ReevesAuthor of "Running Away From Me"

This book is probably the best book you can read when you have a love one who is addicted. It helps you understand some of the things that go thru an addicts mind. It helps you learn how to cope and understand how you help and hurt the situation. Obviously for personal reason this book got our family thru hopefully the worst times in our lives.

I have not only read this book but brought many copies to give to other parents suffering with a child with addiction disorder. This short, easy to read book tells OUR story as parents suffering with a child devastated by a heroin habit. The author help us understand the nature of addiction as a disease and not a moral shortcoming. It helps to know what one is feeing as a parent ( grief, lost, fear ) is not unusual and we are not alone. It also explains we can not fix our kids ( even though every fiber in our soul feels we can and must) and guides us to seeking help ourselves. I did just that and now facilitate a parent support group for parents dealing with the current opiate crisis. I always recommend it to new members and they are always grateful. Thanks you Bevery Conyers.

This book has been by my side throughout the blossoming of my son's addiction to heroin. I have been a fierce advocate and crisis intervention worker for over 15 years and still didnt have what I needed when this disease came to my front door unwelcomed and uninvited. This has been to say the least, the most crippling disease leaving a devastation in its wake that extracts the very life out of people including family members and friends of the addict. There is no way around it...a thief of mind body and soul. Love is the only rule..stay close and never give up. You are not alone. Please sign my petition to get Casey's Law passed in NYS. Review

Reactions to Hilary Spurling’sThe Unknown Matisse: A Life of Henri Matisse, vol. I, 1869-1908 published autumn 1998 by Knopf (US) & Penguin (UK)US REVIEWS‘Hilary Spurling has given us a definitive biography that reads like a detective story. It is an extraordinary and brilliant book . . . extraordinary in revealing . . . so much about Matisse that was previously unknown and unexpected . . . brilliant in the clarity and compactness of its prose and in the sharpness of the insights that appear on page after page . . . This is a truly indispensable biography . . . vividly drawn, utterly compelling and profoundly moving.’–John Elderfield, Museum of Modern Art, New York. One can only eagerly await the second volume of Spurling’s definitive biography of Henri Matisse. –J. Carter Brown, Director of the National Gallery of Art, New York Times Book Review.Again and again the reader fears for Matisse, as in a good novel: how will he get out of this hole? who will buy his work? what if he gives up? . . . Her second volume cannot arrive too soon.–Julian Barnes, New York Times Book Review ‘This is a marvellous book–beautifully written, masterly in its research and wonderfully wise in its depiction of character, circumstance and the vicissitudes of the artist’s vocation.’ –Hilton Kremer, Washington Times‘Spurling brushes aside all our preconceptions about the painter to reveal a personality–and a personal history–none of us had guessed at. . . . This first volume of a full biography of Matisse is a triumph of research and writing, a work of literature worthy of its subject.’–Richard Dorment, New York Review of Books The Unknown Matisse is aptly titled . . . Unlike the luckier and more charmed Picasso, Matisse was haunted by the specter of failure, poverty and ridicule, in part because he–again, unlike Picasso–experienced all three. . . . It’s thrilling to learn what Matisse was looking at, what he experimented with, endured and suffered on the way to becoming one of the great painters of our century.’–Francine Prose, Washington Post‘Her clear narrative keeps one turning the pages almost as if reading a novel . . . a major accomplishment and sure to be a landmark in the literature on Matisse.’–Jack Flam, Art News‘This book is marvellous to read. Having finished it, one wants to start all over again.’–Svetlana Alpers, Key Reporter‘An extraordinary new view of Matisse . . . When I first heard that Hilary Spurling was planning to write about Henri Matisse, I wondered what an English literary biographer could possibly tell me about my intensely French artist grandfather . . . The results are absolutely astonishing. For anyone interested in Matisse’s work, this book will be a revelation . . . The book is almost like a mystery story, packed with surprising developments . . . Once started this is a very hard book to put down. I couldn’t recommend it too highly.’–Paul Matisse, Amazon online‘A smashing good biography . . . Hilary Spurling’s role is advocate, and she is a formidable one . . . A painter’s development is both an intimate and an open transaction, and Spurling makes us feel its peril.’–Editors’ Choice, Best Books of 1998, New York Times Book Review‘Spurling’s book is the opposite of the massive bound collections of file cards that are biography’s current fashion. . . . I do not know of another book which, while lavishly setting its subject among his fellows, illuminates so searchingly the human and artistic struggles of a painter’s life.’–Richard Eder’s 10 Best Books, Los Angeles Times"Hilary Spurling has written a rich and deeply illuminating life, with all the feeling and passion for the work that Henri Matisse himself would have appreciated. This is a true biographical masterpiece." -Mark Bostridge, The Independent on Sunday "A quite glorious biography . . . Hilary Spurling fixes his story with great humanity and rigorous scholarship . . . She has dug among the archives and looked very exactly at the pictures, but she doesn't read backwards from them as though they were somehow inevitable; she sees the risk and drama in each . . . This is a biography with the tact and timing of a very good novel." -Michael Pye, The Scotsman "Spurling has done better than anyone else at uncovering intimate information about Matisse. She has interviewed more people than anyone else; has combed the public archives more thoroughly; and, most important of all, has had greater access than any previous researcher to Matisse's correspondence. This volume is full of previously unknown incidents and details that correct mistakes and misapprehensions and that clarify or expand the known record to complete what is, astonishingly, the very first serious biography of the artist-and destined to remain the standard biography for a long time." -John Elderfield, The Guardian "Superb . . . A reviewer called the first volume of this biography 'a sunburst.' Now that Spurling's long task is completed, I can only repeat the compliment: her book is both dazzling and warming." -Peter Conrad, The Observer "Inspired and innovative biography . . . What is remarkable about this book is the way that Spurling enters into the character of her subject, communicating his charm, his obsessiveness and restlessness, his enjoyment of life, his vulnerability, the tensions within him, and-hardest of all-his creativity . . . "What is particularly impressive is her ability to weave a huge amount of [primary] material into an easy and, at one level, entertaining narrative, with her subject's voice as one of many. Her touching account of Matisse's relationship with the elderly Renoir in the south of France is a good example of her artistry. Lucid and unhurried as it is, this is a major work of scholarship, which must transform our view of the artist's work . . . "The narrative is sustained by her sensitivity and her ability to convey-often through quotation-the artist's emotions as well as the physical process of creating the work. The biographer's feeling for the period creates one of the most pleasurable aspects of the book: its evocation of life in artistic circles, whether Paris around 1910, St Petersburg before 1914 or the south of France during the Second World War . . . "Matisse is not directly described in this biography; rather, his character and his creativity are suggested by innumerable touches, as it were, of paint. Spurling has shown herself a writer worthy of her subject." -Giles Waterfield, The Independent UK REVIEWS‘Outstanding as an interpreter of his art and life alike, she provides fresh illumination on every page. It is a superlative achievement.’–Richard Cork, The Times "Spurling's Matisse is an outstanding biography, as full of insight into the pictures as it is revealing about the man. It is not necessary to have read the first volume to enjoy the second instalment, though it is certain that new readers will want to return to his formative years. They will not be disappointed. " -Jeanette Winterson, The Times (London) "I cannot praise Spurling's measured, brilliantly researched and wonderfully written biography enough." -Adrian Searle, The Guardian "Every day, Matisse set aside an hour or more to write letters to family and friends. Only a small portion of these has been published. Spurling, an expert at mustering biographical evidence, draws on this source material to gripping effect. Her account activates small details, such as the physical constraints that undermine creativity, as well as key relationships, including Matisse's involvement with important collectors . . . "Spurling's monumental biography challenges [the view that Matisse was a lightweight compared to Picasso]. It deepens and makes more complex our understanding of Matisse." -Frances Spalding, The Sunday Times ‘Spurling Volume 1 invites comparison with John Richardson’s Life of Picasso . . . her achievement is in some respects even greater than Richardson’s . . . Hilary Spurling has transformed Matisse studies.’ –William Feaver, Times Educational Supplement‘A superlative achievement . . . It is a dramatic, moving and sometimes comical story, and all one can hope is that, without relaxing her admirably rigorous standards, Spurling won’t keep us waiting very long for Volume Two.’–Elizabeth Cowling, Times Literary Supplement‘Matisse . . . suggests the opposite of the strenuous, discomforting novelty which so much of the art of this century has aimed at embodying . . . It is the purpose of this biography, triumphantly achieved, to reverse that notion in every detail . . . this book transforms our sense not only of Matisse but also of his work.’–Martin Gayford, Sunday Telegraph‘Miraculous . . . the best life of a painter that I have ever read . . . For all the intelligence and sensibility of her approach, Spurling charts [Matisse’s life] with the agonising excitement of great fiction.’ –Grey Gowrie, Daily Telegraph

never thought i'd read this entire book not skipping a page but i joyfully did. it's big around 500 pgs or more. It is superb writing, research, understanding of art and especially her understanding and ability to talk about the human dynamics of this huge family and all who came in touch with Matisse. Highly recommended. a side review are her depictions of WW II in France on a day to day basis in the small towns and villages - how it was part of everyone's life involved with Matisse - she brought that war home to me in a way i could know it, feel it. The complicated and twirled relationships Matisse had with all the people around him. Spurling superbly gives it to us, the reader. Matisse was huge in his ability to love people, cultures, the beauty of light, color, experimentation and - always digging deeper, never losing focus of what he was about & was on this planet for - to make visible to others the beauty of art, music, soul & life coming together. Matisse' relentless ability to "keep your head down and be in the moment" is absolutely the best inspirational cocktail ever. When i read this bio i also had the gigantic catalog of the MOMA retrospective of his life's work, highly recommended. Such a treat for me. Matisse has always been a favorite artist for me, and now so totally in love with him like all the others who were lucky enough to be a part of his life. so thank you Hilary Spurling!

Matisse continued to go his own way, extending his experiments with color and abstraction while finding the emotion within his models, even within his still life's. His reliance on his wife for emotional stability and on Shchukin for financial security allowed Matisse to explore his genre more extensively plus move to exotic environments for periods of time, which expanded his artistic perceptions still further.

In the second volume of her unmatched biography of Matisse, Spurling completes the archetypal story of The Artist. As clearly as one could desire, she portrays a man to whom everyone and everything in life was subordinated to Work. It is a vivid picture of how subservience to an inner urge, a personality-dominant characteristic, can allow a man, in desperate need of family, friends, colleagues, art-community support and recognition, can turn these into instruments of achievement, as measured by what they mean for accomplishment of his own objectives. It is likely that many of us would deny respect to the businessman, the politician, the journalist, who acted in such manner, but the Artist (at least, not when personally related to us ) is generally respected for his commitment. In Matisse's case, Spurling shows how he did care for others, do his best to advance them in their personal and professional lives, but, at rock bottom, was prepared to sacrifice their interests, their well-being, to his gift. I used the word obsessed because their is every evidence that Matisse, as was Picasso, the other recognized Giant of his era in French Art, could no help himself.Aside from this fascinating aspects of his life, Spurling explores, better than has been done previously, his relationship to the major figures and many of the minor ones, in his life. She also explores the life circumstances from which emerged the various notable patterns in his work, in particular, she details the deteriorating health situation from which came some of the most striking visual imagery of the twentieth century. There is much else to be found in this second volume of a set prerequisite to understanding the life and work of Matisse. Certainly, this book is among the "must reads" for any amateur (or professional) student of Modern Art.

I read both of the biographies written by Spurling on Matisse. I felt that the first one, The Unknown Matisse, was the weakest of the two (but still very much worth reading). Some photo captions were confusing and this first book could have been edited down a bit. We really don't need to know about realtatives of realtives, etc. The second book, Matisse the Master, is excellent. Both seem to be well documented and reader-friendly (without the mystique and jargin that you sometimes find in these books, especially if written by pompus art historians or academic types). The plates of Matisse's works are good but there really should have been a second set of plates in the second book. Major pieces were discussed with no photographs, leaving the reader to seek out images from other sources. Both books together offer a Matisse biography that gives an intersting, thorough, and balanced presentation of the artist, his personal demons, the historical context, family members and their interactions, Matisse's creative understandings and struggles, his interaction with other artists and historical figure, etc. If you like Matisse's work, the two books are well worth the modest price and investment in time to absorb 800 pages of material!

Do not buy this for reproductions - they are small and only serve to remind you of the key works mentioned. Do buy it if you are interested in one of the most fascinating, important painters of modern times. Full of pertinent and/or fascinating information of a time and a place not so long ago of a world of art and politics continually changing in new and exciting way.

A thick book but great for research and photos to support the text

Review

"David Grand is one of the most important and effective psychological trauma therapists now practicing, and his development of Brainspotting is a very important leap forward in helping people resolve trauma. Brainspotting is a remarkable, sophisticated, flexible addition to the therapeutic toolkit of any psychotherapist. I know because I use it regularly, and find that, combined with the psychoanalytic approaches I normally practice, the results are astonishingly helpful. Using it, one becomes amazed at the extent to which our traumas can be detected in our ordinary facial and eye reflexes, and how, by using these windows to inner mental states, many traumas and symptoms can be rapidly relieved. Grand writes clearly, and the cases, dramatic as they are, are not exaggerated. —NORMAN DOIDGE MD, FRCPC, Author of The Brain That Changes Itself "All I can say about Brainspotting is, "THIS STUFF WORKS!" Thank you for everything you have given my life with your genius and discoveries!"   —EARL POTEET, L.C.S.W., M.S.W.

This review is about the book, and not the procedure or the author. I wish the other reviewers would make the same distinction.I tried to figure out if this book would teach Brainspotting, so I read the reviews, saw that someone asked the same question of a reviewer (which went unanswered), and looked all around the Internet. The descriptions were in that grey area of "Overview", "Case studies", "Reveals". Some reviewers were saying that this was a life-saving book, but others would say it's just about the development. Is this book both? Are people reading the book and using it in their practice as they claim? Here's the answer; No. It's NOT a how to.This is a book on the development of Brainspotting (coming up with the name, him finding the x-axis, then finding the y-axis, sentimentally finding his deceased dad's pointer & hat, then finding the z-axis, client examples, finding a creativity spot, a decision making spot, the god spot (ya don't say...), international marketing of the procedure, etc.), and not really a how to. I'm sure he's a nice guy, and some may find his casual writing style "folksy", but I found it to be somewhat self-aggrandizing. I don't really care about his international vacations as a child, or how he decided to name the Biolateral CD's after his friends' band.Perhaps there really isn't more to this procedure than being able to do it from what David discloses in the book. If that's the case, I would have preferred to pay much more for a much smaller book. There are 7 kindle pages (5 print pages?) on sorta doing it to yourself - the very first suggestion in the chapter (3 pages) is to purchase his Biolateral CD. Really? Three pages? Another suggestion is to hold your own hand and soothe yourself. This book is not for clinicians, rather, I feel it is for devotees.I suspect that some of the glowing reviews are shills. How "thrilled", "over the moon", and "saved my life" can one be about a book on the history of a technique. Do not confuse the results some may have gotten from the procedure and working with David, with the actual content of the book. A history of The Beatles will not teach you how to play like them.Albeit a quick read, and marginally worth the $8 I spent, I felt that there is very little practical content."Finis Coronat Opus"? Caveat Emptor... I suspect reviewer shenanigans.

I really enjoy reading books about human behavior and I picked up this book because of the unique title. The basic premise behind David Grand's book is that the eyes are the window to the soul or at the very least an access point to past trauma and negative experiences. According to David Grand, our eyes and vision are the mechanism that we use to orient ourselves to our environment. Different eye positions access different physical and emotional memories. By identifying a "brainspot" a therapist can help people heal past traumatic experiences much faster than traditional therapeutic techniques. While I found the topic very interesting, I found that this book focused too much on the history and development of the process. I personally would have liked to read about the science behind brainspotting and why it is an effective therapy. I did find the exercises that promote mindfulness useful and the part discussing the oculo-cardial reflex very interesting but I would have liked to read less about the details of its development. That all being said, I do realize that I am not the target audience. I am not a therapist and recognize that there may not be any studies on brainspotting that would generate scientific content. I imagine that this is a unique modality for treating patients and therapists looking to use this treatment technique would find this information useful. I do hope that there is a future edition which includes more insights into WHY this treatment works and less about its history.

This is mostly an "I invented this. I created that" tale. It only tells you a little bit about brainspotting itself. Not very well written. Not a guide for how to use brainspotting yourself (unless you want to buy his CD). More a history of how David Grand came to create it and name various techniques related to it. I'm suspicious of all the great reviews, as there is little to gain from this book unless you're interested in a historical review of brainspotting. Note: As another reviewer mentioned, this review is not a critique of the brainspotting technique, but rather of this book about it.

This book is more informative of this technique instead of a self-guide. I would rather know about this and be effectively assessed by a trained Brainspotting psychologist. I found myself hoping for a quick fix solution to the 'problems' of my life by reading this book and being 'cured' quickly. Yeah that's a bunch of garbage as an approach to dealing with life and its complexities and challenges. I've since matured and found more success reading other titles.

I love this technique used for trauma. I have had it used on me (and still am) and am being trained in it. It's phenomenal! I can't wait to get started using it on my own clients!! It's much less "traumatizing" than EMDR, in my opinion. I have had a couple of clients not return to me because they found EMDR to cause them too much anxiety and would not return for just one more session to "reboot" their nervous system (i.e. help them relax and stay that way). Brainspotting does not cause this upheaval. Thank you, thank you thank you, David Grand!

Title: N.C. book joins 'Cool Stuff' seriesAuthor: BROOKE CAIN Publisher: News ObserverDate:6/13/2011"Raleigh and the State of North Carolina: Cool Stuff Every Kid Should Know" is part of a new series of books from Arcadia Publishing of Charleston, S.C., that delivers some painless summer learning in a child-friendly blend of facts, photos and graphics.Arcadia's "Cool Stuff" series, which currently features books on 22 U.S. cities, is written by Kate Boehm Jerome, who also conceived the series. Jerome, based in Charleston, has been producing educational materials for children for more than 25 years. Many local kids may already know some of the information in the book, which is aimed at ages 7 to 11: Raleigh has a hockey team and a giant acorn, and hosts the State Fair. Notable here is Jerome's deft delivery of educational trivia designed to enlighten children (and perhaps adults) about more cultured aspects of the town, tidbits on the local ballet, symphony and theater scenes, as well as facts on history and science.Jerome says teachers, parents and grandparents love the books and the educational motives behind them, but her inspiration for writing is children."I love their curiosity and perspective," she said. "I'll go to downtown Charleston and see kids with their parents on the popular horse and carriage rides. The parents are always listening intently to the tour guide and looking at the beautiful buildings, but the kids are constantly glancing at the diaper on the horse, just praying for a malfunction!"Jerome says she has traveled to Raleigh many times and finds it a "delightful city." She tapped into many different sources to research the book, she said, and also asked Ryan Smith of the Greater Raleigh Convention Bureau for feedback on the finished project.A small point of pain for parents perusing the book may be the part where Jerome touts Raleigh Wide Open as a fun downtown street festival. And it was. But the Raleigh City Council canceled the festival for this year, citing economic woes.Of the book's 48 pages, about a quarter are devoted solely to Raleigh.

These are really good for 4th graders learning state history. Text is readable and accurate, not overwhelming. Pictures and graphs are very helpful and make great texts for mini lessons on non fiction text features. Good value. Beware, though, the North Carolina Colony book is almost exactly the same. Four stars in stead of 5 because of that.

Got for my daughters friend who was moving. Helped her learn abt her new home town.

Well, this is a Junior version of "The Odyssey" and "The Illiad". Bought it for assigned 6th grade reading.Important to note: In keeping with traditional Greek dress, and artistry, the illustrations for the book feature nudity. No genitals are shown, but. . . EVERY thing else. This caused some consternation at school.

Fun way to refresh on Homer. Read it and then got a copy for my 11 year old daughter who's excited to gie it aread - we've already had a talk about who is who and why the names are tough to say.

This particular reprinted edition is missing some of Willy Pogany's amazing pictures. Text appears to be the same, though. So, I would make sure to get the Collier Books edition from 1982, it is just layed out better and contains more pictures. ( It is called the Children's Homer, and is still by Padraic Colum/ Willy Pogany)Beautifully written and perfect for bedtime reading. It is a very readable, yet beautiful rendition.

Great for Classical Education. The children's version is great, but parents may want to read to the younger children. Fine for middle school reading on their own.

Beautiful art deco illustrations by Willy Pogany. And the moral of this classic of western civilization is this:Command thyself! A true hero and leader of men is not one who can control others but the man who can control his own heart and mind. And peace surpassing all understanding will follow.

My second grade son, who is very into all things "Star Wars the Clone Wars" and Legos (like most 8 year olds his age!) is really getting immersed in the tale of Telemachus and his search for information about what happened to his dad Odysseus. The narrative is beautifully written and engaging. It is not too literary for him but also does not over simplify the story. I also apprieciate the illustrations, they are a good intoduction to classical greek line work! I am reading it aloud and it has been a joy to share with him.

I have a translation of Homer but was not able to finish it. I got the Kindle edition of the Children's Homer and I'm still reading it to my five-year-old. I've finished it myself. It is fairly easy to read once you get used to the thees and thous. Of course, the subject matter is violent but for boys who watch Transformers and Ben10, it is definitely acceptable. It is a good introduction to Greek gods and goddesses, to the ambiguities of war (eg how Helen sympathised with Hector) and even family values.

This is a beautiful piece of literature. The author has captured the Greek classics in a way that maximizes the lyric beauty of the original in prose that crosses the eye as your favorite beverage caresses the throat.

Useful!!

A tale for tots with a message for the adults important tho them. I expect my grandson, aged ten, will be intrigued just because it's so easy but has the Buffet bio at the end. Looking forward to the others.

It is the beginning of a journey for the Ministry of girls I have been entrusted with ages 7 - 14, it is versatile in that I can associate it with all their age groups. Thanks Amazon!

Bought the "A-Z of 13 Habits: Inspired by Warren Buffett" along with the "The tale of Tortoise Buffett: Inspired by Warren Buffett" by Lucas Remmerswaal. As I have 3 kids in the tender age of 4-6 and as a longtime professional investor myself, I hoped this book would indeed introduce some of the Buffetesque wisdom in a subtle way to my children. How incredibly disappointed was I, when I received and read what turned out to be these two naive leaflets, for they cannot be called children's books. This is such a blatant attempt to milk the Buffett brandname from well-meaning parents. The text is attrocious, no structure and absolutely without any didactic value. It smacks of a back-of-the-envelope hurried cut-and-paste of Buffett's generic rules that us adults have come across in the numerous books about the sage and indeed by the man himself in his annual shareholder letters. It is absolutely not for children (not mine anyway), it is so out of touch and out of its depth ( I mean how hard can it be??). I expected something kids can relate with and be excited about... in contrast the author believes that by drawing a semblance of Buffett on each page and by promoting Coka-Cola the kids would somehow have their internal light bulb switched on... to Buffett's original musings.I truly did not expect one of my worst investments ever would have been in the name of Buffett, but I guess everyone can be suckered in when our guard is let down so fancily.Aesop's tales are a million times better than this ... and they were conceived a few thousand years ago...Very big shame, and a total waste of time, expectations and money. So unlike what Buffett should stand for.

dreadful, can't read it on my kindle, the print is too small and can't make it biggervery faint too. wish I hadn't bought it. I guess if I had bought it in hard copy itwould have been better, Just can't read it on the kindle

...this will be the book I'll give them. I believe kids should be taught about money as soon as they realise their existence - the first time they ask about them. It is very important kids understand the vital role, that money have in our life. The sooner they realise its not a good idea to work FOR money, but make money work FOR YOU, the better off they will be in their future lifes. If you want your children to be financially literate early on and financially independent later on, BUY THEM THIS BOOK.

The stories that Mr. Remmerswaal have written, including The Tale of Tortoise Buffett, are very engaging and enjoyable to read. Kids can easily identify with the characters in the stories. The overarching "point" in each story was abundantly clear yet none of the stories "preached" the "point." If you want your child to read a story that is both fun and inspiring, this is one of those books you want to get your hands on.

I have read several of the 13 Habits series and this is one of my favourites. A simple twist on a much-loved fable of the tortoise and hare, that encourages budding entrepreneurs to earn, save and THEN invest rather than play the high risk leverage game with borrowed money. Simple advice? Yes. But if people had done this before we might not be in the mess we are in now!

This is a very nice collection of Irish songs. THe book is just larger than half a sheet of copy paper and not terribly thick. It does have many interesting photos to give the book some character, adn the lyrics and music are easily read. I have some trouble getting the book to lay open flat, but that is not a real problem, so I am keeping at 5 stars. Overall, the construction and quality ofhte book is great, and the content is as advertised (you can see the songs included in teh "look Inside" feature).I have 3 of the 4 books int his series and they are all quite wonderful.
