As a fan of speculative fiction and an aspiring writer in that domain, Octavia Butler has always been my matriarch. She is the writer that may not have been my first inspiration, but she certainly left a deep, lasting impression on my soul. Her work is so seminal and I want to weep every time I encounter a reader or writer unaware of her contributions. Octavia is as important in my mind to the fabric of “blackness” as any Civil Rights activist. Her work empowers and calls us to be great. Octavia’s faith in humanity’s ability to rise above so tremendous. So imagine my absolute delight when I found out there was going to be a book from social justice movement figures dedicated to Octavia. I was ready to devour the stories and see just what was given birth from the minds of people who were already accustomed to dreaming. Any work where you fight for the marginalized if you’re not careful can make you cynical and cause you to lose sight of those dreams that propelled into doing the work in the first place. I wonder how many of these authors walked away from this collection feeling rejuvenated about their work. Because they certainly made me feel rejuvenated about mines. There were quite a number of works in this collection and admittedly, some were stronger than others. But they all came packed with a message and I think that alone is powerful. In the interest of time and modern day attention spans, I’m going to mention the works that really crawled into my mind and/or heart and lingered there for a while. Like that one friend who you know will tell you what you need to hear even when you’re not quite ready to hear it. Some of the ideas took me to sad, contemplative places. But we need to wander through those spaces as much as we need to enjoy our happier moments. A reader and most certainly a writer has to take in the full richness of life, not just its sweeter moments.“Revolution Shuffle” by Bao Phi was an excellent choice for the opening story. I was introduced to a new fear I had never thought about. Never even considered it whenever I watched anything related to zombies, but it’s a powerful point. We all know the privileged would be looking to point the fingers somewhere and in the story it was the Asians and Arabs. Like I said, it was a fear I never even considered and didn’t even realize that these groups probably live with daily. The day something terrible happens to America they’re likely going to be the ones with the finger pointed at them. It put a new perspective on things for me because it made me wonder just how much terrified a Muslim-American is of a terrorist attack happening versus your average American. They have to know that the hammer will fall on them first if such a thing was to occur. What a terrible thing to live with and this story takes that kind of racist stereotyping to a dark conclusion.“Black Angel” by Walidah Imarisha struck me with its rawness and it also taught me something new. Any story that give me genuine knowledge will always anchor itself to my mind. This tale is gritty and revolves around a fallen Angel, but fallen because she disobeyed God by saving lives during a terrible war. It makes God seem cruel, but the Bible is full of enough examples of that to have precedence. And I enjoy stories that dig into the greater religious questions without being overly for one side or the other. The reader is allowed to draw their own conclusion. As far as what I learned, I had no idea that illegal immigrants were shipped away to maquiladoras like chattel. The story made me do research and I became livid with what I read. In that way and the first, this story enlightened me.“Homing Instinct” by Dani McClain made me fearful for those who are so young and for those are still yet to be born. It broke my heart because the premise of the story seems like something that could potentially happen. The story centers on climate change and people being forced to choose a place to live in an effort to slow down the terrible damage we’ve already caused. People are going to be allotted only so many travel miles a year and people who are on the other side of the U.S. from their families (like myself) have to make some real hard decisions. This story was perhaps the most striking to me because it struck so close. I could relate to the main character’s struggle of wanting to stay true to themselves, but not wanting to leave their Mother all alone. My God, what a terrible decision to have to make on so many levels. Dani captured such immensity in such a small space. Truly a great piece of fiction here. There are quite a few other pieces in this anthology (22 if I’m numbering right) that cover topics ranging from sexism, breaking gender norms, racism, deforestation, cultural destruction, twisted medical breakthroughs and so much more. There really is a plethora of topics here available for any sci-fi fan to explore. The anthology makes a powerful point early on that if you are interested in social justice then you must be interested in science fiction. Because the black people of today were only dreams and science fiction to our ancestors longing for freedom not so long ago. This and other reviews can be found on my blog at: https://rrapmagazine.wordpress.com/Also follow on Facebook for updates on what's being reviewed next: https://www.facebook.com/rrapmag

This is one of the most phenomenal selections of speculative fiction short stories that I've ever read. The framing of the book - that all activism is science fiction or speculative fiction and that to change the world, we must be able to dream of a different one - is probably my favorite framework for anti-racist, anti-capalist, feminist speculative fiction. Phenomenal considerations of race, difference, gender, disability and ability, caplitalism, the prison industrial complex, and other issues. This is probably the best book I've purchased all year.

As the subtitle makes clear, this is an anthology with an agenda, and it's an agenda that will inflame certain parties in recent kerfuffles in the science fiction community. That said, this is an enjoyable collection. The stories are varied in setting, viewpoint, and kind. There's an incipient uprising against both a hoard of zombies and the politically repressive response to the zombie hoard. There's a gentle story of a woman attempting to reconnect with both her dead grandfather and her very much alive daughter, in an alternate history where the Civil War started in 1859, and the slaves won. A woman has to decide how she's going to react to a government that's finally responding to global warming, in a way that may be both too much, and not enough. One choice will cut her off from her mother and the place she grew up; another will cut her off from her partner and her life now. Is there a third choice, and can she do it? A young man who is the token black superhero opts out of the nonsense--until he finds out how he matters to young people, and a away to make a contribution that matters to him.The authors include names all sf readers will recognize, like Tananarive Due and Terry Bisson, and people who've never written sf, or even fiction, before. Possibly for that reason, there are a number of stories that I read and thought, that's a set-up for a story I'd like to read the rest of...Having said that, while there are a number of "beginning, middle, no actual end" pieces, there's nothing here I didn't enjoy. There's nothing here that has that special sense you get when mainstream writers go slumming and assume that "science fiction means it doesn't have to make sense." All the writers here respect their readers and their material. The editors didn't excuse lesser work because they wanted a particular name or a particular theme included. Despite being an anthology with an agenda, there's no pounding the reader over the head, except to the extent that happens with any themed anthology when you read straight through rather than dipping in.I'll carry away from it a particular fondness for "The Token Superhero," by David Walker, and "The River," by Andrienne Maree Brown.I've been saying "read" throughout this review; that's a very loose usage. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator's voice is excellent, strong, clear, and expressive.Recommended.I received a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This was a book that I wanted to love, really badly. Speculative/science-fiction and social justice? That's a great theme for a collection of short-stories. Unfortunately, it was the writing that came up short. Many of the stories have some great ideas, but they're never developed. I understand that these are short-stories, but to be satisfying to read, it still has to be a completely realized vision. Despite the unique ideas present in some of the stories, I found reading the entire book to be a bit of a slog, given the inconsistency. It takes more than imagination and good intentions to make a great work of fiction.

This book is rich with facts concerning human trafficking and sex trafficking in the U.S. I gained a great deal of information from it. On the downside, it is a little too anecdotal in some places and too preachy in others. (I prefer to draw my own conclusions from documented facts.)

Whether you a police officer, victim service provider, a student, a community member, an academic or anyone wanting to really identify issues and factual information about human trafficking, this is the source above all others. One can pick up the book and go to any section to find out "how" better to become effectively involved in prevention, prosecution, or understanding victims and their long road back to a sense of self-worth. This is a book that should be mandatory reading as a source book and yet a book that gives common sense advice in order to stop modern day slavery.

Most Americans believe that slavery is either dead or something that occurs in far off places to foreign people and thusly does not exist or concern us. Kevin Bales and Ron Soodalter dispels these myths in The Slave Next Door. Through a combination of cold hard facts and personal stories of exploitation, cohesion, and enslavement. Unlike other books that only focus on one aspect of slavery ( like the sex trade), Bales and Soodalter premise is that no form of slavery is justified and talks deeply about systems of agricultural labor, domestics, and sex slavery and argue that the traffickers will continue to find inventive ways to enslave and exploit others. We have a role in the slave system because we get items like hand-woven rugs from India, Pakistan, and Nepal , steel and metals used in cars is obtained from Brazil after the charcoal has been collected by slaves in Brazil and most distressingly we may be eating products produced from slave labor brought to us by America's largest corporations.Bales and Soodalter further attack the notion that sex trafficking is only a problem for foreign born women in this country by illustrative cases like that of Dennis Paris who used heroin addiction to control several American born, naturalized citizens into a web of prostitution. The last portion of the book is dedicated to an assessment of United States policy towards victims of Modern Day Slavery by going through agency by agency in the federal government and discussing the steps they are taking to combat the problem. One thing that comes out of here is that NGO's that deal with human slavery are hideously under funded and are in desperate need of skilled labor and this is key when he discusses at the end, what we as Americans can do about modern slavery.

Four starts say I like this book. The terminology is not appropriate. How can you "like" reading about slavery in America. I really hadn't thought about it before, but this opened my eyes, maybe a little too wide. This is very completely researched and analyzed, and full of specific stories and situations throughout the country. From farm labor slavery in Florida to sex slavery in New York, to house slaves in Seattle. We see these people more than we know, but I had no idea about the reality of their bondage. They are held in place by physical and mental abuse, fear, and in some cases physical restraint.Read their stories and open your eyes. It is not a happy picture, but the lesson is we can all do something about it. Find out what. Read the book.

A must have for anyone wanting to understand the wide scope of human exploration and trafficking.Starts with a history and background. Shows the laws enacted to protect those exploited or trafficked.Has examples of true stories of survivors, exploiters and redemption.I would highly recommend this amazing book, but be prepared to experience several emotions: disbelief, anger, fear, helplessness, frustration, etc. You will not regret purchasing this book.

Great read! I knew this went on, but not on this level. I would have liked to have thought that this does not happen in the U.S., but it does. The third largest criminal enterprise, just behind drugs and guns. This book would be a revelation for most, as they do not realize that human trafficking exists in this country. I cannot recommend this book enough. It is clearly an eye opener.

Kevin Bales packs a lot of information into this book. Whether you are familiar with human trafficking or not, this book will provide you with a plethora of facts and points to think about. I was quite shocked by some of the information in the book. I urge you to read this book to find out more about a hidden problem that needs to be exposed.

Very detailed information about the multiple forms of slavery that is all around us.

Spiritual Practices in Community: Drawing Groups into the Heart of God, by Diana Shiflett

Review

"Spiritual Practices in Community is a gift to leaders and to the church. With conversational, practical, and down-to-earth wisdom, Diana Shiflett provides a guide for facilitating the practice of ancient and contemporary spiritual disciplines, inviting us to drink deeply from the well of living water together. An experienced leader and pastor, Diana is passionate about helping ministry leaders attend to their own walk with God so they are better equipped to provide space for others to encounter him. I'm grateful for this refreshing and creative spiritual formation resource!" (Sharon Garlough Brown, retreat speaker, author of the Sensible Shoes series)"This is the best how-to resource I know for those who are responsible for guiding others into a deeper experience of the Christian life. The author gives practical step by step instructions on how to lead others (and even yourself) in over thirty spiritual practices in multiple settings and age groups. The book can be used in board meetings, staff meetings, worship services, small groups, children's, youth, and intergenerational ministries, camps, conferences, personal devotions, or even around the dinner table!" (Bradley Nassif, North Park University, author of Bringing Jesus to the Desert)"Christian growth is not a solo occupation. It is a partnership between the body of Christ (that's you and me) and the Spirit of Christ. The strength of that partnership develops with practice. And this practice, like other practices, can be a team effort. Shiflett highlights how disciplines practiced in community with conversation, questioning, listening, and reflection shape our relationship to God, self, and others. Shiflett is a trustworthy and practical guide. Working from hands-on experience she provides step by step ways to practice spiritual transformation with others." (Adele Calhoun, copastor of spiritual formation, Highrock, Arlington)"As an introvert, I'm constantly amazed at how doing spiritual practices in community is so transforming and so rarely offered. Thank you, Diana, for your excellent coaching and practical ideas!" (Jan Johnson, author of Meeting God in Scripture and Abundant Simplicity)"Over the years we've learned that spiritual development happens best in relationship―in communion with God together in community. So the focus of this book about encountering God together is exactly what we need in our day. We believe God is inviting leaders to live in divine fullness and others to enjoy this abundant refreshment together. We hope you'll let her very practical book guide you on that very fruitful journey." (Alan Fadling and Gem Fadling, founders, Unhurried Living Inc.)"Spiritual Practices in Community is an excellent tool for every Christian leader who wants to see people grow in Christ. Pastor Diana Shiflett not only offers engaging experiences to use but also provides the practical guidelines tempered with the voice of wisdom and experience to guide the user. I found this book to be an exciting resource that I can't wait to use and to recommend to other leaders. But I also found it to be a surprising source of spiritual nurture that prompted me to look more closely at my own spiritual practices and challenged me to bring variety to the daily disciplines of my life." (Meagan S. Gillan, director of women ministries, Make and Deepen Disciples Team of the Evangelical Covenant Church)"Spiritual Practices in Community takes you on a journey to consider the profound simplicity of being with God. This book will guide you through new experiences to awaken your soul to the presence of God and transform the way you engage with him. There are dozens of simple and refreshing spiritual practices that will help usher you and the community you serve into an intimate experience with God." (Lisa Jarot, vice president for student life, Judson University)

#71,078 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book, written for leadership, is for anyone who wants to go deeper in their faith and relationship with Jesus Christ. The author gives step by step instructions in how to use these spiritual practices to use the Word of God and prayer to grow. Each person has to seek God’s guidance in which practices help you in your journey. I loved how she wrote about her own struggles at first when she encountered some of these practices. She is very good in making sure it is God and the Holy Spirit we are listening to and not the spiritual director. I like also how she can encourage a person who thinks they are not creative enough to engage some of the practices to just consider thinking differently about Scripture and giving it a try.

Spiritual Practices in Community is a wonderful book for individuals or groups who want to go deeper with God. For five years, I have studied and practiced these exercises with the author, Diana Shiflett, and a group of women at church. My experience of God has become fuller, richer and more satisfying. This readable and enjoyable book is one I will consult regularly; it stays on my desk at arm’s length and may never be put on the shelf. Many of the topics in this book are spiritually deep but Diana’s voice is seriously light hearted. The book is easy to read and comprehend. Her joy and delight in God come through as she writes with clarity, humor and brevity. She manages to avoid heavy theological jargon without compromising sacred content. Each chapter includes the spiritual and biblical perspective on the practices she introduces thus maintaining scriptural integrity. The format of the book is written for those who lead others but nearly all the spiritual practices can be done individually on your own. Only 192 pages, it took longer to read than expected since I chose to perform most exercises before moving on to the next chapter. This is a book to be savored. As a 60 year old follower of Christ, I discovered I can hear, listen and talk to God in unexpected ways, sometimes very surprising ways. Some of the methods are new but many are ancient Christian traditions that are enjoying renewal in Evangelical circles. And what a gift they are! Some of my favorite practices from the book are silence, journaling, centering prayer, breath prayer, guided imagery, prayer of examine, prayer walk and Sabbath. Some are done daily, some rarely, but all have widened my view of God and love for others. These practices are organic in that they change as one grows spiritually. The book shows different ways a given spiritual practice might be presented depending on the group being led. There is freedom to prayerfully explore these practices as the Holy Spirit leads us. Some of the richest moments happen when we practice together then share with each other. The Spiritual Practices presented in this book are as varied as the people in any group. There is something for everyone who wants to go deeper with God. Some practices use scripture, art, imagination, writing, walking, one-on-one sharing, group sharing or physical activity. Diana shows leaders how to gear each practice to the desired goals of the group from youths to seniors. She gives guidelines to draw people together and increase unity and sharing from both introverts and extroverts. The book explores creative ways to listen and hear from God and others; this cultivates compassion, appreciation and understanding among group members. Clear, concise directions for leading groups are included in each chapter. Potential pitfalls and problems are discussed along with strategies for staying on course and on time. Leaders are strongly encourages to try the exercises on their own before leading others. In this fast paced world, these practices can still the soul and quiet the spirit so one can be more receptive to God. Diana teaches ways to put distractions aside and be more present to God. The benefits are not only experienced in the actual practice but even more so over time in daily living: in work, ministry, relationships, community, marriage, parenting… This book is a great help as one seeks to abide in Christ. A wonderful book!

I've been interested in this book since I first heard about it, and it didn't disappoint! One of the best things about Diana Shiflett's "Spiritual Practices in Community: Drawing Groups into the Heart of God" is that it can be used in a variety of settings. It's created for leading groups, but the setting could be a church small group, a family get-together, a board meeting, etc.Throughout the book, Shiflett keeps stressing the importance of you as the leader trying out the practices before leading others in them. I think this is great practical and spiritual advice. On the practical side, by experiencing it as participants will, you'll have a clearer idea of how to instruct your group in the activity. Because of this, you will find yourself deeply impacted and transformed on the spiritual level. One of the other things I love about this book is that it's "accessible." In other words, it's not full of dense/complicated terms! In addition, there are a variety of activities available, so people will be able to engage regardless of personality type, learning style, etc. Great resource for clergy, laity, individuals, children, youth, etc.!

This is an AWESOME book that will transform your relationship with Jesus Christ — I should know, these practices transformed my spiritual walk! It’s a book that you will want to read, cover to cover first, to get a sense of how to draw nearer to God and help others draw nearer as well. It captivates the reader, and once I started it, I didn’t want to put it down until I finished. Then, go back and read and try each spiritual practice personally. For, as Diana points up, you can’t teach if you don’t try these first yourself. Having done most of these as a member of Diana’s bible study group for the last few years, I have a good sense of those that are the most impacting. But don’t rule out trying those that are not in your “wheelhouse”. It’s these practices (in my case, the artistic ones) that often result in my own little “epiphany” about a passage of Scripture, as I’m out of my comfort zone. The best way to do these is in a group. This book is an incredible gift to Christians and will transform the relationship of many with our Heavenly Father. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you are part of or leading a small group who desire to grow closer together and to Jesus. Five stars!!!!!

This is a wonderful resource for anyone wanting to explore or improve spiritual practices! Diana Shiflett writes in a way that is easy to understand and makes you want to keep reading. Every instruction and tip is helpful, and makes improved spiritual practices seem possible. Even though her focus is to help you lead others into these practices, it's also a huge help for your own journey. I will definitely be re-reading this and using each chapter to help guide my walk with God going forward!

This is a very useful book. Most eyecare professionals will tell you that if you have cataracts, the only solution is to have an operation. But, they can go bad! My sister's friend had both eyes operated on to replace the lenses. One of them is now constantly irritated. They have a good safety record, but it isn't a perfectly safe deal. Glaucoma or macular degeneration is pretty much the same story. Eyedrops for the rest of your life or an operation. Mr. Crarer's book says it doesn't have to be that way. He is probably right, in my opinion. A few years ago, I bought a Vita-Mix blender. At the time, I was starting to have trouble driving at night when it was snowing or raining and the streets were wet. I began making a vegetable drink nearly every day at noon. In about one month, my night vision was back to normal. I suspect Mr. Crarer,s methods may work.

Very simple explanation of the herbs and supplements that he took for healing his eye problems. It spurred me to get some eye supplements because I realized the importance of taking care of my eyesight. I already have poor vision and am starting to develop cataracts plus my mother had macular degeneration. I'm glad I purchased this book because it helped me to key in on exactly what I needed. Hopefully, I will have the same success as the author did!

When I saw the title of the book it took my attention immediately as it was very promising. The book is written in both scientific terms as well as very easy to understand. Not just for eye remedies, the book is so informative on general vitamins and minerals. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot from it.

Great Book!

Informative book that will help anyone that is concerned about their eye health. Learned so much about proper eye nutrition.

Although the book was written a while back there is a lot of good information that still holds for today . If you are having eye problems you should read what he has to say.

GOOD PRODUCT.

Very interesting as I I have numerous eye problems, including glacoma.

WHOA! This is sooooo delicious...but so short! We are barely introduced to the main characters and then it ends on a cliffhanger.

This is the first book I've read by this author. I enjoyed her writing style. She was able to introduce characters that I like. She presented a strong heroine and hero. I like to see strong partners. I enjoy Alpha/Omega stories. Good job!

Great first book to a series! Kept me intrigued to continue on reading the second book.

*I received an ARC for an honest review.*3 stars: Good enough that I will read the second one when it comes out, but only if I can get it through my Kindle Unlimited and don't have to pay the listed price.So... a story about a woman who is genetically predisposed to completely submit to an Alpha...? It sounds like something I really wouldn't like, since I prefer strong women. Buuuuut... somehow I felt like this heroine was actually strong, since she fought against being an Omega and just wanted to live as normally as she could (albeit, in the slums). I was drawn in and really couldn't put the book down, which surprised me. Also, the world-building was excellently done. It felt very realistic. It certainly had some issues. Grammatical, first of all. And some naming inconsistencies. Also, I face-palmed when I read the description about the difference in size between the hero and heroine. He seems inhumanly large and she is inhumanly small. And yet at one point the heroine describes them as "fitting together" physically. Yeah, I doubt that. What dropped the ratings on this for me the most though was the novella-length. Come on, this should have been the first third of an actual book. It's an outrageously short read. This is the all-too-common ploy to get more money for each individual part instead of just releasing a real novel.Regardless, my curiosity insists I know what happens next, so as long as it's on Kindle Unlimited, I'll be getting the next one.

Ianthe is the sole breadwinner for her siblings, the only one physically capable of earning money, albeit meager for their needs. When she is offered a means out of the blue at the cafeteria she works, which would go a long way towards surviving in the slums of Pandora, she takes it. After all, it was only for a single night at an exclusive club catering to the elite Alphas. However, Ianthe is hiding a long-kept secret, one which would be disastrous for her and her family.Alpha Legion Aristophus has not gotten to his particular position of control over the city by standing idly by. Something about the woman he met that night was pulling him to her, and Legion is driven and determined to find out what that is. She is more than she seems, and her beautiful response to him spurs a hunt for all the details of her life. The truth of which, may be the ultimate prize for him.A brand new Omegaverse world has been created by this new author, and I look forward to reading more of this author’s stories!

Read in KU.Caution for those readers who don't understand the Omegaverse world as some things will put you off forever. Not for the weak-hearted.Ianthe hates the society that she and her family find themselves in. With old Earth decimated and new Earth bringing forth a new breed of humans who are now either Alpha Status, Beta or the worst Omega. For her being Omega is a life sentence, one where society says her trait has no rights and will go to an Alpha. Hiding her nature has become second nature, and her sister helps after her parents being killed years earlier. However living in the slums is no bed of roses and to get money to move up, buy her suppressants and medicine for her brother, she caves in and go to Eros. When she catches the eye of the Alpha Legion, her pretense of being a Beta is in trouble, but she has no idea. With his power he sends his second to determine the truth. Will her lie be the cause of hr family downfall and her own, or will she outsmart this Alpha.Get caught up in this addition to the Omegaverse books. I liked it and if you are a reader of these types some things in this seems familiar. Read on and be entertained.

I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed reading the story. It moved at a good pace. I was never bored. There is a decent amount of character building. The hero was a jerk but then based on the genre I expected him to be. I liked the heroine but wished she was not a doormat. Her family took advantage of her and she readily let them. O wished that she would have tried to fight the hero more instead of giving in so readily into him and into her nature. There was no cheating and no sex with OP. The heroine was a virgin and based on the information given the hero was very particular about whom he bedded. I wanted the sexy times to happen sooner as opposed to near the end of the book but I could handle it. I also wished that the next book was about a different couple and that this book ended with at least a HFN as opposed to a cliffhanger.

This is the first time I have read a book by this author and I found this book to be an extremely intriguing & mesmerizing MF omegaverse Sci-Fi romance and a pleasure to read. The plot is suspenseful and set in a futuristic world. It is well-written with characters that have individual personalities and are well-practiced in the art of deception. It is about a young female omega (Ianthe) who is desperate to look after her sister & brother and would anything to help them. She is later found out by an alpha (Legion) and promptly claimed. There is: alphas, betas, omegas, intrigue, suspense, twists & turns, drama, secrets, deception, memories, chemical cocktails/suppressors, offers, dislike, desperation, deceit, guilt, threats, spanking, submission, domination, devious plans, a set-up, consequences, heat, shock fear, dismay, choices, claimed & steamy scenes.I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to more from this author. I would recommend this book.“I received a complimentary copy, and this is my honest opinion”
