Review

"Spiritual Practices in Community is a gift to leaders and to the church. With conversational, practical, and down-to-earth wisdom, Diana Shiflett provides a guide for facilitating the practice of ancient and contemporary spiritual disciplines, inviting us to drink deeply from the well of living water together. An experienced leader and pastor, Diana is passionate about helping ministry leaders attend to their own walk with God so they are better equipped to provide space for others to encounter him. I'm grateful for this refreshing and creative spiritual formation resource!" (Sharon Garlough Brown, retreat speaker, author of the Sensible Shoes series)"This is the best how-to resource I know for those who are responsible for guiding others into a deeper experience of the Christian life. The author gives practical step by step instructions on how to lead others (and even yourself) in over thirty spiritual practices in multiple settings and age groups. The book can be used in board meetings, staff meetings, worship services, small groups, children's, youth, and intergenerational ministries, camps, conferences, personal devotions, or even around the dinner table!" (Bradley Nassif, North Park University, author of Bringing Jesus to the Desert)"Christian growth is not a solo occupation. It is a partnership between the body of Christ (that's you and me) and the Spirit of Christ. The strength of that partnership develops with practice. And this practice, like other practices, can be a team effort. Shiflett highlights how disciplines practiced in community with conversation, questioning, listening, and reflection shape our relationship to God, self, and others. Shiflett is a trustworthy and practical guide. Working from hands-on experience she provides step by step ways to practice spiritual transformation with others." (Adele Calhoun, copastor of spiritual formation, Highrock, Arlington)"As an introvert, I'm constantly amazed at how doing spiritual practices in community is so transforming and so rarely offered. Thank you, Diana, for your excellent coaching and practical ideas!" (Jan Johnson, author of Meeting God in Scripture and Abundant Simplicity)"Over the years we've learned that spiritual development happens best in relationship―in communion with God together in community. So the focus of this book about encountering God together is exactly what we need in our day. We believe God is inviting leaders to live in divine fullness and others to enjoy this abundant refreshment together. We hope you'll let her very practical book guide you on that very fruitful journey." (Alan Fadling and Gem Fadling, founders, Unhurried Living Inc.)"Spiritual Practices in Community is an excellent tool for every Christian leader who wants to see people grow in Christ. Pastor Diana Shiflett not only offers engaging experiences to use but also provides the practical guidelines tempered with the voice of wisdom and experience to guide the user. I found this book to be an exciting resource that I can't wait to use and to recommend to other leaders. But I also found it to be a surprising source of spiritual nurture that prompted me to look more closely at my own spiritual practices and challenged me to bring variety to the daily disciplines of my life." (Meagan S. Gillan, director of women ministries, Make and Deepen Disciples Team of the Evangelical Covenant Church)"Spiritual Practices in Community takes you on a journey to consider the profound simplicity of being with God. This book will guide you through new experiences to awaken your soul to the presence of God and transform the way you engage with him. There are dozens of simple and refreshing spiritual practices that will help usher you and the community you serve into an intimate experience with God." (Lisa Jarot, vice president for student life, Judson University)

This book, written for leadership, is for anyone who wants to go deeper in their faith and relationship with Jesus Christ. The author gives step by step instructions in how to use these spiritual practices to use the Word of God and prayer to grow. Each person has to seek God’s guidance in which practices help you in your journey. I loved how she wrote about her own struggles at first when she encountered some of these practices. She is very good in making sure it is God and the Holy Spirit we are listening to and not the spiritual director. I like also how she can encourage a person who thinks they are not creative enough to engage some of the practices to just consider thinking differently about Scripture and giving it a try.

Spiritual Practices in Community is a wonderful book for individuals or groups who want to go deeper with God. For five years, I have studied and practiced these exercises with the author, Diana Shiflett, and a group of women at church. My experience of God has become fuller, richer and more satisfying. This readable and enjoyable book is one I will consult regularly; it stays on my desk at arm’s length and may never be put on the shelf. Many of the topics in this book are spiritually deep but Diana’s voice is seriously light hearted. The book is easy to read and comprehend. Her joy and delight in God come through as she writes with clarity, humor and brevity. She manages to avoid heavy theological jargon without compromising sacred content. Each chapter includes the spiritual and biblical perspective on the practices she introduces thus maintaining scriptural integrity. The format of the book is written for those who lead others but nearly all the spiritual practices can be done individually on your own. Only 192 pages, it took longer to read than expected since I chose to perform most exercises before moving on to the next chapter. This is a book to be savored. As a 60 year old follower of Christ, I discovered I can hear, listen and talk to God in unexpected ways, sometimes very surprising ways. Some of the methods are new but many are ancient Christian traditions that are enjoying renewal in Evangelical circles. And what a gift they are! Some of my favorite practices from the book are silence, journaling, centering prayer, breath prayer, guided imagery, prayer of examine, prayer walk and Sabbath. Some are done daily, some rarely, but all have widened my view of God and love for others. These practices are organic in that they change as one grows spiritually. The book shows different ways a given spiritual practice might be presented depending on the group being led. There is freedom to prayerfully explore these practices as the Holy Spirit leads us. Some of the richest moments happen when we practice together then share with each other. The Spiritual Practices presented in this book are as varied as the people in any group. There is something for everyone who wants to go deeper with God. Some practices use scripture, art, imagination, writing, walking, one-on-one sharing, group sharing or physical activity. Diana shows leaders how to gear each practice to the desired goals of the group from youths to seniors. She gives guidelines to draw people together and increase unity and sharing from both introverts and extroverts. The book explores creative ways to listen and hear from God and others; this cultivates compassion, appreciation and understanding among group members. Clear, concise directions for leading groups are included in each chapter. Potential pitfalls and problems are discussed along with strategies for staying on course and on time. Leaders are strongly encourages to try the exercises on their own before leading others. In this fast paced world, these practices can still the soul and quiet the spirit so one can be more receptive to God. Diana teaches ways to put distractions aside and be more present to God. The benefits are not only experienced in the actual practice but even more so over time in daily living: in work, ministry, relationships, community, marriage, parenting… This book is a great help as one seeks to abide in Christ. A wonderful book!

I've been interested in this book since I first heard about it, and it didn't disappoint! One of the best things about Diana Shiflett's "Spiritual Practices in Community: Drawing Groups into the Heart of God" is that it can be used in a variety of settings. It's created for leading groups, but the setting could be a church small group, a family get-together, a board meeting, etc.Throughout the book, Shiflett keeps stressing the importance of you as the leader trying out the practices before leading others in them. I think this is great practical and spiritual advice. On the practical side, by experiencing it as participants will, you'll have a clearer idea of how to instruct your group in the activity. Because of this, you will find yourself deeply impacted and transformed on the spiritual level. One of the other things I love about this book is that it's "accessible." In other words, it's not full of dense/complicated terms! In addition, there are a variety of activities available, so people will be able to engage regardless of personality type, learning style, etc. Great resource for clergy, laity, individuals, children, youth, etc.!

This is an AWESOME book that will transform your relationship with Jesus Christ — I should know, these practices transformed my spiritual walk! It’s a book that you will want to read, cover to cover first, to get a sense of how to draw nearer to God and help others draw nearer as well. It captivates the reader, and once I started it, I didn’t want to put it down until I finished. Then, go back and read and try each spiritual practice personally. For, as Diana points up, you can’t teach if you don’t try these first yourself. Having done most of these as a member of Diana’s bible study group for the last few years, I have a good sense of those that are the most impacting. But don’t rule out trying those that are not in your “wheelhouse”. It’s these practices (in my case, the artistic ones) that often result in my own little “epiphany” about a passage of Scripture, as I’m out of my comfort zone. The best way to do these is in a group. This book is an incredible gift to Christians and will transform the relationship of many with our Heavenly Father. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you are part of or leading a small group who desire to grow closer together and to Jesus. Five stars!!!!!

This is a wonderful resource for anyone wanting to explore or improve spiritual practices! Diana Shiflett writes in a way that is easy to understand and makes you want to keep reading. Every instruction and tip is helpful, and makes improved spiritual practices seem possible. Even though her focus is to help you lead others into these practices, it's also a huge help for your own journey. I will definitely be re-reading this and using each chapter to help guide my walk with God going forward!
