Amazon.com Review

As Clarissa Dalloway walks through London on a fine June morning, a sky-writing plane captures her attention. Crowds stare upwards to decipher the message while the plane turns and loops, leaving off one letter, picking up another. Like the airplane's swooping path, Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway follows Clarissa and those whose lives brush hers--from Peter Walsh, whom she spurned years ago, to her daughter Elizabeth, the girl's angry teacher, Doris Kilman, and war-shocked Septimus Warren Smith, who is sinking into madness. As Mrs. Dalloway prepares for the party she is giving that evening, a series of events intrudes on her composure. Her husband is invited, without her, to lunch with Lady Bruton (who, Clarissa notes anxiously, gives the most amusing luncheons). Meanwhile, Peter Walsh appears, recently from India, to criticize and confide in her. His sudden arrival evokes memories of a distant past, the choices she made then, and her wistful friendship with Sally Seton. Woolf then explores the relationships between women and men, and between women, as Clarissa muses, "It was something central which permeated; something warm which broke up surfaces and rippled the cold contact of man and woman, or of women together.... Her relation in the old days with Sally Seton. Had not that, after all, been love?" While Clarissa is transported to past afternoons with Sally, and as she sits mending her green dress, Warren Smith catapults desperately into his delusions. Although his troubles form a tangent to Clarissa's web, they undeniably touch it, and the strands connecting all these characters draw tighter as evening deepens. As she immerses us in each inner life, Virginia Woolf offers exquisite, painful images of the past bleeding into the present, of desire overwhelmed by society's demands. --Joannie Kervran Stangeland

Formatting is off throughout the kindle edition. I bought this specifically for the annotations and the annotations (outside of the introduction, which was formatted perfectly) are not properly linked. There are no annotation numbers/links in the text at all. If I manually look at the annotations at the end of the book, they do not link back properly to their place in the text (they all link back to page 1 of the Mrs Dalloway portion of the book). I am not familiar enough with the text itself to notice if that's significantly affected, but I've already found one place where a period was omitted from the end of a sentence (when compared with a paperback version, isbn 198539412X). Mrs. Dalloway is already a challenging text, I don't need the literal formatting making it any harder for me.

This book by Virginia Woolf has been described as the greatest English language novel. That may not be hyperbole. Some sentences are so beautifully written that they beg to be read again (and again). The story is simple: It follows one day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway as she prepares to host a high-society party in London that evening. It jumps from Clarissa's story to that of several of the guests. It's a story about their thoughts and reminisces more than their actions. It's a story about the love between men and women and women and women. It's a story about the politics of marriage in the early 20th century. It's a classic!

For me this was less a story than an exploration of life and what it means to be human. And, by necessity, how to get the most out of the lives we live, which, as Woolf reminds us, go by in the blink of an eye.Woolf is a superb writer; perhaps one of the greatest of all time. And this may well be her best work, made all the more impressive by the fact that she used the stream of consciousness technique that jettisons many of the rules most readers are familiar with. There are no chapters, for example, and many of the most important sentences are so short and simple, by design, as to be overlooked. I won’t say it’s difficult to read but you do have to get used to it.The storyline has been well documented by other reviewers. Set in London following the First World War, we follow the day of Mrs. Dalloway, hostess extraordinaire to the “ruling class”, and the wife of an English bureaucrat in the upper crust of the British government but who will never quite grab the golden ring of appointment to the Cabinet. The achievement and the shortcoming both define him in equal measure. There is a long list of characters, many of them quite minor, but to whom Woolf devotes considerable print. That, I believe, is quite by design, because each represents a different representation of the human reality that we each, at some level, accomplish something, but that none of us ever quite realize complete and utter fulfillment. We choose who we are but can never quite choose who we ultimately want to be. It is the duality of human existence and there are no exceptions.Even Mrs. Dalloway, who has devoted her life to living in the present, faces the same existential dilemma. She is admired by some, tolerated by others, and quite disliked by a few. She is, in a word, human and, as a result, she is both defined and burdened by her duality. One of the characters is Septimus Warren Smith, a young veteran of World War I who suffers from what we now call PTSD. He is, in terms of the storyline itself, a minor character, to the point that many have questioned his inclusion. To me, however, he is a central character and the book couldn’t exist without him. And even Woolf herself admitted, when challenged on this, that he was the double of Mrs. Dalloway.Smith is central, it seems to me, because if Mrs. Dalloway hides the doubt and ambiguity of her life successfully, he loses himself to the same ambiguity quite obviously. They are quite like yin and yang, the complementary forces of light and dark, fire and ice, the masculine and the feminine. One cannot exist without the other. In the end it would be difficult to describe this work as uplifting. It is life. And life, as Woolf reminds us, despite pockets and moments of glamour, is always a bit messy and dispiriting. Life is a duality. Tragedy occurs alongside grace. Doubt inevitably accompanies hope. Can there be the joy of success without the crush of failure? All told I think this is a superb book and if you have any interest in exploring the duality of our existence there is a great deal here, in what is a relatively quick read.

WOOLF wrote to a rhythm more than she wrote to a plot, and Mrs. Dalloway is a perfect example of her stellar method. Is there one sentence, one word, that is not perfect? I can't find or hear one, and I have now listened to this entire recital by the wonderful Annette Bening 14 times now. Yes, 14 times. I will listen 14 more times before this notice has been up a month. There are not enough superlatives to describe Virginia Woolf's genius and talent.

Book Description

The first major biography of the influential, visionary Disney animatorThe Life and Times of Ward Kimball is the most in-depth biography ever written about any Disney artist. Despite the tremendous amount of details (most of which are new even to me) the material is presented in such a compelling way that one cannot stop reading and going from discovery to discovery. (Didier Ghez, author of Disneyland Paris: From Sketch to Reality; Disney’s Grand Tour: Walt and Roy’s European Vacation, Summer 1935; and of the They Drew as They Pleased book series)The Life and Times of Ward Kimball is a valuable and groundbreaking book. It deals comprehensively with aspects of Ward Kimball’s long and varied life that have not been examined with any thoroughness before, specifically his roles as a popular jazz musician and a celebrated connoisseur of vintage railroad rolling stock. That Kimball was able to pursue such interests while cementing his reputation as one of Walt Disney’s most skilled and creative animators and directors is truly remarkable. (Michael Barrier, author of The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney and Hollywood Cartoons: American Animation in Its Golden Age)

Ward Kimball was one heckuva fascinating person. I expect to learn a great deal more than I now know about him (& the many others that are included in the accounts) from reading this 260+ pages of pretty small text; and the documentation is extensive. That’s my thumb in the picture of the first page and I do not have big thumbs (but I have a good pair of prescription reading glasses, thankfully)! Okay, the ‘three stars’ is because I’ve leafed through it and found lots of interesting & detailed (to the point of minutiae) narrative info to eventually read...but: there is not one illustration in this book & Ward Kimball, besides having a very interesting life beyond the light table, was responsible for many fond animation memories of my youth. How wonderful a book this would have been (for this reader, anyway) to include images of the man, his hobbies (Grizzly Flats, among them), & his wonderful character contributions? I had hoped I would receive something along the lines of the Disney Editions’ “Marc Davis...”? But, I bought this at pre-publication & there was no one to advise me. I would have waited, honestly, for a used copy; and then used the (pre-pub price of:) $30 towards something more visual for my collection.Hopefully, someday, there will be a more visual celebration of Ward Kimball...this is not it, unfortunately.EDIT: I see that there is now a "Look inside" preview available...words are good, and there are a lot of them here; the narratives are fascinating & detailed, but: how I would love to see a more-visual version of Ward's life & accomplishments?

Ward Kimball was, by consensus, a loner, a genius and something of an imp. The person designed by God to write Ward's story, then, is Amid Amidi ---also something of a mixture of genius and imp. But it looks like The Disney people found a way of preventing that from happening ---so instead we get "The Life and Times Of Ward Kimball: Maverick of Disney Animation." The problem is --- here Ward comes off, not as a maverick, but as a boring contrarian. Ward's wit and bite are missing (and that's not easily achieved----it requires a special kind of lack of imagination) . As tragedies go, this doesn't exactly rank up there with the burning of the library at Alexandria -----but it sure qualifies as a major bummer. Amidi could have done something memorable with Ward's story ---something that didn't include sentences such as "But beyond spaceflight, Ward was interested in possible extraterrestrial life that might be found in outer space." Yes, that would certainly be where to look for it. Wherever he is, I hope Ward is smiling. I'm not.

I sorta feel guilty about 3 stars, but I really hate books about artists without photos OR THEIR ART. If you are going to write about a visual medium, well . . .we need visuals. An in depth book about Ward Kimball is long over due. Like many I have waited impatiently for the the Amid Amidi book with promises of rare art and photos, and a side of Kimball that Disney seemingly is not comfortable with. Until then this James Pierce bio of Ward is a very good read.

... Zero (zilch) photographs, art, illustrations, etc. None.Would have loved a small center section of images illustrating key points in Kimball’s career and life with detailed expert captions for each since this is, after all, a biography of a visual artist.

Enjoyed every page and was sad to see it end.

i'm chuckling at some of these reviews. "the text is too small." "where are the pictures?" "i want something visual." listen up... this is a 312 page hardcover. published by a university press. look at the dimensions listed in inches... this is NOT a coffee table art book. that's the sort of thing that disney editions puts out. this is an actual history text by an actual university professor. expect footnotes, not illustrations.one reviewer complained about the word count, level of detail, and "minutiae." again i have to chuckle. that's exactly what a 300 page history text from a university press is SUPPOSED to be.

This book, rich in detail, affords the reader an intimate look at Ward Kimball who worked at the Disney Studio in the early days of animation. It also provides a wonderful walk back to possibly the best time in California when everything and anything seemed possible. I enjoyed it immensely and lost myself in the tale of a truly unique character, who started out with hopes of being a serious artist and stumbled into animation.I, too, wondered why no photographs (though there are plenty to be seen on the Web). I must assume that the Disney Studio would probably have wanted final approval of the text if photographs were included. Also, protection of the brand being all important these days, they might have wanted to make changes. Therefore, without photographs, the author was free to produce a thorough and complete biography of Ward Kimball, warts and all.Ward loved fun and he loved his toys - his antique trains (full size in the backyard), antique cars, as well as Dixieland Jazz. He played the trombone in a band he started, the Firehouse Five plus Two and, traveling on a vintage fire truck, they played up and down the coast of California, stopping to serenade children. An unlikely pairing with Werner von Braun took Ward into the realm of space exploration which was little more than a whimsical dream at the time. Their combined talents produced a TV series which so engaged the nation, it sparked the National Space Program.Walt Disney and Ward Kimball were very different people and so conflict was bound to happen at times. Walt was a serious, thoughtful and conventional man by nature, whereas Ward was gregarious, fun-loving and totally unconventional. He overstepped boundaries wherever he felt hemmed in or frustrated at not having a free hand to explore his own ideas. This book supplies a generous and charming examination of a life that was unique and rich in creativity. Walt Disney saw the potential in a very young Ward Kimball. He was not mistaken.
