This book I cannot get enough of! I own the Kindle version, paperback and also the APP in the audio form (from the Google Playstore). In addition, iTunes has the complete audio book FREE of the Interior Castle available in MP3 format--this ifree to the public with no restrictions (which I also downloaded to my SD card). If you are into mystics and special spiritual saints, this book is what I totally recommend! It gives you an explanation of what the SOUL is all about in the form of a crystal/diamond castle with GOD living in the center.St Teresa of Avila gives in a sense, a roadmap on how to start in the first mansion and travel to the seventh one, which is where one will find GOD and answers to prayers and many of the soul's life questions. This book has inspired me to pray more, meditate more and go into my own SOUL/PRAYER ROOM each day to search for answers etc.One more thing I will add is that before I discovered this book, I first read a book on paperback and audio CD by Carol Myss called Entering the Castle. She based her teachings on this book which St Teresa of Avila wrote to her nuns. For me, after the Holy Bible, this is the book (on Kindle and Audio App), is one that inspires me. Also, I do like Carol Myss Entering The Castle, but some of Ms. Myess teachings are her own twist on St Teresa's.Highly recommend this book to all!

I just finished reading this incredible book by such a magnificent Saint and Doctor of the Church. St. Teresa's voice truly speaks in this book through her very personal writing style. It is hard to find such beautifully authentic faith and humility in the world, and St. Teresa truly bathes your heart in it through the spiritual journey of entering into the 7th Mansion. It would be a certain sentence or a paragraph that she would describe and my heart would just be pierced to the extent of choking up and my eyes welling up at the exact truth my soul felt. The exact same things I'd think or experience in my redemptive journey back to Christ. It is truly a beautiful spiritual book that glorifies His Majesty our Lord God Almighty, and how we can through His Mercy and our humility share in that glorious peace.

I love this book but I imagine it's not something everyone would enjoy. I'm a Christian but I'm not a Roman-Catholic. I found it an interesting insight into the mind of a 16th century nun, but for me the greatest value of this book is her spiritual perspective on prayer, which is the main theme of the book. She is obviously a seasoned veteran of prayer with great personal experience of communion with God. Reading her accounts of ecstatic experiences and her love of God is inspiring to me, as I'm sure it would be to anyone interested in deepening their relationship with God. There are moments wherein the writing is somewhat clunky and awkward but there are great heights of rapturous communion with God.

This book is NOT on an expectable level or condition. This book is NOT a "story". This is a spiritual road map. It will certainly strike some as dated, it is. Some wont like the self descriptives... Get over it. This book was written in 1577. I've read a number of books of this ilk and this is the first one that actually "gets it". If you're looking for exciting reading thiss probably wont work for you. This book may put you in touch with how to consider your soul in a different way. Understand I'm reading spiritual or soul manuals from the 300 and 1300 a.d. era and the first thing to remember is these people didn't have to decide how to split their time between spiritualism and tv or the computer or the games or face book. This book was written by a SAINT. She wanted nothing as much as to be closer to her God. Do I like how she sees herself? NO. She simply knows more about the immortal soul than 99% of the people who ever lived. If you weren't sure; I love this book.

Purchased for an online course with the Center for Action and Contemplation. This book was translated by Mirabai Star and authored by St Teresa of Avila. St Teresa is a MUST read for any who wish to enlighten their spiritual sojourn and have progressed as pilgrim for a little while. St John of the Cross was her companion as she reformed Carmelite convents. She was a deeply devout Christian mystic, with a strong mind, and excellent administration skills. Her hilarious sense of humor shines through as she penned the book “In obedience” — as she keeps reminding the reader to her director/confessor. Teresa cleared away any suspicion about her Jewish ancestry and her solidness as a Christian during the Spanish Inquisition. She’s so tender and generous and pragmatic to the sisters she said verses. Christian Mysticim at its highest. 💟 Sit with her, soak it up, and journey to your own Interior Castle. It’s exquisite.

#427,077 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book was disappointing. Although the quotations are excellent, by themselves they are little more than random sentences. Without the context of Gandhi's story, without knowing what his life and actions were all about, having a book with some words he said is practically meaningless. As I read the quotations, I found myself referring to Louis Fischer's biography of Gandhi, and Gandhi's own autobiography to find out what the quotes meant when Gandhi actually said or wrote them. When I got too lazy to look up the quote somewhere else, the words merely passed before my eyes in a way that could not be described as reading. The entire volume has an engineered, overprocessed quality because of the topical, rather than chronological or situational, arrangement of entries. The introductory essay seemed to run on forever, but it is an interesting insight into Gandhi's motives and choices. Generally, though, it is verbose and tedious, not at all the engaging and lively reading I would hope would be associated with such a charismatic subject.I can see this volume being useful for gathering direct quotes for a paper or speech about Gandhi, but without background information found in other materials, the meaning behind the quotes in this book will be next to impossible to understand. In short, for general reading on Gandhi's life, find another volume. Get this only if you're looking for sound bytes arranged by topic for use as one liners.

This book challenged me in my compassion for others. I also came away inspired to live with more love and courage. Gandhi's words are inspiring. There's also some deep truths in this book on life, social activism, and human relations.

I never thought those words would go together... And I never related Gandhi to any of them except for nonviolence. This book gives a thorough description of nonviolence and the ways in which Gandhi viewed it and implemented it. He is very straightforward and factual. I really appreciated that he didn't soften the truth and the facts about what is required for peace via nonviolence.

Inspiring, inspired, thoughtful, hopeful, constructive, compassionate, and just. Ghandi is required reading in the struggle for democracy and justice everywhere, although Ghandi might instead claim that the original spiritual teacher on Nonviolent Resistance was Jesus, whom he deeply respected.

I love this book. I've read a fair bit of Gandhi, but this compiles the points so nicely.

good

I use readings from this in my English class to meet the nonfiction Common Core State Standards. It fits nicely with my Civil Rights Movement unit.

I don' recall being this.I don't understand why i have to write about something that I don't recall getting. The surveys are requiring too much time.

Contemporary. YA/NA. Rh. 4 guys. HEA. Coming of Age. Bullying. I wish this book was a thing when I was in high school. I love everything about this book. Love the anti-bullying messages. Love the body love. Love the you be you vibes. Heaven an eighteen yr old girl dealing with anxiety, finds herself being bullied and slut shamed after she fakes having sex to better a friends reputation. Coming to her rescue is the school's hottest guys, The Allendale Four. Emotional plot. The content touches on bullying (verbal, physical, social, cyber), slut shaming, poly relationships, body image, dealing with anxiety/depression. Oh and there's some hot scene in this. Total angsty drama. And a sweet, sweet ending that'll melt your heart and resonate with your soul. Definitely a recommended read.

This was really not good. The plot is very weak, the catalyst for the bad Heaven needs to be saved from is a joke, and the reason the guys give for coming to her rescue combined with the way they are instantly in love with her makes no sense.SpoilersOk first of all Heaven is this wallflower who decides to help her gay friend cover by pretending to have sex with him and then everyone at two schools becomes obsessed with her having sex, even though the rest of the student body isn't prudish, and her response is to start dressing slutty and acting slutty and then complain when people assume she is slutty. Sang in Ghost Bird series had an absentee father and abusive mother to over come, Heaven has crippling anxiety, because she has to be broken or why else would she be willing to get involved with four guys. The guys are the sexiest thing at their school that everyone is obsessed with and she has had crushes on them from afar, and she is school friends with them, but close enough to talk to them about her crushes on others in the group, doesn't really fit the Cinderella story. The guys, you know these gods, have been conveniently harboring crushes on her since sixth grade but despite being gods of the school were too shy to make a move on her and decide now is the time when she starts acting like a slut, and because of these crushes they all fall instantly in love. Oh and it's super convenient that these 18 year olds who are about to go off to college have decided that the only way they can date is if they all share a girl because anything else would ruin their friendships. And let's talk about her stalker. Seriously the guy becomes obsessed with her just because he thinks she isn't a virgin anymore and he hacks the school computers to watch her. So the school computer was open and pointed at them from the back seat of the care because who doesn't drive with the computer open like that. Same for the stolen losses in the deserted hallway and the grinding session on her front step. I know I always open up my lap tap and leave it conveniently aimed at my nefarious activities. And how convenient that her best friend who she was acting like a beard for immediately realized yeah I am gay and then decided to do nothing about the stalking she is enduring but he cares so much as to tell her mom on her when she admits she is dating four guys. And her mom just instantly is ok with her going off with the guys for the night when they tell the school the police chief's stepson is a bad guy. Yeah they have video proof but it was never shown, they just make a bad teen movie speech and then go off for waffles and a night of sex because the police totally wouldn't want statements and her uber protective mom would be down with that. And can we just talk about the fact that Heaven didn't know that guys would have to masturbate after she spent an afternoon grinding on them in total conflict with everything else that was written about her. This is just bad, start to finish. Don't read it. The more fields into it the worse it gets.

The plot immediately reminded me of the movie easy a, the story moves too fast, basically none of it is at all realistic, it seems lazily written like the writer is decent but didn’t do enough characterization or buildup. Unrealistic that the boys would suddenly defend her for getting bullied when she obviously wouldn’t be the first it happened to at their school. Personalities are like stated instead of shown and it’s just poor storytelling.

Excellent take on an ‘Easy A’ high school situation - with a hot RH! Heaven is a great character who portrays one realistic experience of anxiety and depression. Interesting take on recent online privacy and data concerns.I would have liked to see a little more development of the guys but given the length of the book each boy’s distinct personality comes through. At points I felt that one bit was focused on more than the others but the author does a good job of giving each boy their special ‘turning point’ with the heroine when you can see that she cares for each of them. Excellent writing flow that pulled me from start to finish.Highly recommend for fans of contemporary High school RH (this should be a one click!). Would also recommend for fans of Erin Watts ‘Paper Princess’ or Tijan’s Fallen Crest High series looking for a similar, but lighter, read. One sex scene that might not be suitable for all readers, themes of self-harm and attempted sexual assault. Standard amount of minor spelling errors.

I love this story for so many reasons. First of all, I love that Heaven deals with issues so many teens face (anxiety, depression, self-harm, bullying), and Ms Lawson doesn’t shy away from discussing them. That is definitely not the focus of the story, but it was done well and in a way that I think could bring hope to others who are dealing with similar issues. As someone who works with teens and young adults who often deal with these issues, I can tell you that normalizing them in this way goes a long way to helping young people to not feel alone and to find healthier coping skills.I also love this story for the romance! It is very well-written, sweet and touching. The guys have different personalities and different ways of approaching things, and each meet Heaven’s needs in their own way. ❤️ Also, this book is very steamy and satisfying. :)

...a tough subject write about because the various causes run the gamut of life. In the lead character’s case, we know what the main issue is—sort of—because the author explains it. But, again, it’s not an easy issue to describe nor would the solution fit in a story such as this since so much work goes into the prevention of the spiral. No person wrestling with depression or anxiety can make promises to resist the insidious attacks of either. So while I applaud the author for her effort, I hope those reading don’t over-simplify the symptoms Heaven demonstrates and apply them to everybody. As to the story? Fun teen drama with lots of romance. I enjoyed it.

PLAYING WITH FIRE This is why I’m confused. I’m a hockey player—a very good hockey player, not a great hockey player. My brother Duane was a great hockey player when he played, but he gave it up. “If I know one thing in this world, then this is the thing I know,” he told me the day he bestowed his old equipment on me. “The minute you start thinking about the meaning of sports, you’re useless as an athlete.” But that’s not why I’m confused. I don’t question why I’m a hockey player, I just am one. It’s my style that’s the issue. I play hard. Rock-’em sock-’em, you might say. Yet I always lead my team in scoring. Not because I’ve worked to develop my shot or my puck-handling skills, but because I either intimidate guys into giving the puck up to me or I ram the guy with the puck right into the net. It works. Coach is always using me for an example in practice. “The guy with the fire in the belly,” he calls me. “If you all played with half the fire this guy has, we’d win the damn Stanley Cup.” But then he’ll turn around and tell them, “He’s cold as ice, this boy. And that’s what you need to do the job. He’d skate right over his own mother, slice her to bits, to get that puck.” And he meant it as a good thing. Somehow, he was right both ways. I’m known to other players as the Iceman, because I’m heartless. But they couldn’t really know about the burning inside. Could I be both, fire and ice? Sure, depending on the day. Opening day this season, in my grubby little league, I was on fire. I don’t play anything, don’t really do anything, in the summer, so I was kind of itchy when the season started. I came out like a pinball, hitting everything in sight. I play defense, but right off the opening face-off I took a run at the center, leaving him flat like a bull’s-eye in the face-off circle. The puck dribbled off to his left winger, who I chased, caught, and body slammed. As I sat on that guy, the defenseman came rushing by and scooped up the puck. Whoosh, he blew by the lame center and lame right winger on my team. Swoosh, he blew by our lame right defensemen. But by the time he reached the right circle in front of our lame goalie, I was right on his ear. He heard me—I know, because when I come up behind a guy, I use a heavy, pounding stride that cuts the ice so hard you can hear it in the stands. As I hoped, he tilted a glance just slightly over his shoulder in my direction and hesitated before winding up, and he was mine. His skates left the ice momentarily as I drove him with a football-like tackle, past the net and into the boards with a crash of sticks and pads and skates. Almost knocked myself out in the process. I dragged myself wheezing and hunching to the bench. Less than a full minute into the season, and I was so exhausted I couldn’t speak. “Sometimes I think maybe you should just leave your stick on the bench when you go out there,” Coach said, laughing, as he passed me the Gatorade squeeze bottle. That was pretty much how that first game went. I knew that I should have been pacing myself, but it was like I had no control over it. I’d sit on the bench, get my wind back, then go out like a maniac for sixty seconds, destroying everything out there until I could barely crawl back to the bench. Somehow in all that I managed to steamroll a goal in, by slashing at the goalie’s hands so much in a pileup that I swear I heard him mutter, “Screw this,” as he pulled his hands back. We won 1–0, mostly because by halfway through the second period nobody on their team was too hot for holding the puck, and because I was being too disruptive for my own team to get any flow going when I was on the ice. When I wasn’t on the ice? Let’s say my team wasn’t very deep, which is why I had to concentrate on staying on the ice longer, not burning out. Game 2 was a whole different thing. Pacing was never a problem. It came only three days after that first crazy game, but I felt so different, it was like I was a different player inside the same #4 uniform. I was cool, cold even, as I thumped up and down the ice, doing my job, stopping everybody who came my way, clearing the puck out of the defensive zone, even managing to whistle a few drives on net from the point. But I felt nothing. I knocked some guys down with good clean checks. Some guys knocked me down. But we all went on our way. When the second period came, I had no recollection of the first and had to look up at the scoreboard to find out that we were down 2–0. The only time I felt a little bit of something was when I had to go with Dice. Darren Dice, a big mother of a guy who had been dogging me since my earliest peewee games, was stalking me for the first of our many annual brawls, but I hadn’t even noticed him. Not much of a talent, Dice, but always with a mean stupid grin that scares people into making mistakes for him. And he could knock out a bronze statue if you let him catch you. I was a little lazy, carrying the puck up ice early in the third period. Dice must have been in his sneaky crouch, hunting me down from all the way across the ice, because I never even saw him before he blasted me from the side. It was a perfect shoulder check that sent me headfirst into the Plexiglas by my own bench. Nice hit, I thought, and that was it—that’s how dead zone I was. Until I got up and found him right in my face, both gloves off and stretching his fingers out. With the grin. For the first time, though, I was looking almost straight into his eyes, and I filled nearly the same amount of space as him. In past years, boy had I taken some spankings from him. The key, with Dice, with big guys, with tough guys, is to keep them off balance. I dropped my gloves and quickly grabbed the neck of his shirt. Using a stiff-arm technique, I jerked him first left, then right, then straight down as if I was going to ram his face on my knee. I got him so that he didn’t know where he was going with each tug. But I knew. When I moved him to one side with my right hand—crack!—my left fist was there to meet his face. When I moved him to the other side, or down, or pushed him straight back, one-two-three-four-five, my left hand was like a baseball bouncing off his cheekbone, his forehead, squishing into his nose. I dissected him, hitting him exactly where and when I wanted to. All the while he had to keep scrambling just to keep his skates under him. The feeling of power, of total control, made me want to do it more, and hit him again, which I did and did. Finally I knocked him off his feet, not so much with the punches—he was one tough mother—but with the constant shaking and pulling him every which way. He never even got to throw a punch. I rolled on top of him, and when the refs pulled me off, old Dice looked a little stunned. Stunned, but still smiling as much as ever, as he had through the whole fight. I did my time in the penalty box, and by the time I got out, there was only a minute left in the game. That’s what happens to guys who fight in the third period, they’re basically out of it. But I didn’t mind. I stayed on the ice that entire final minute and didn’t contribute much. I even allowed some weenie, weasly little winger to slip past me and score a goal, making the final 4–0. But after he finished celebrating, on his next trip down ice, I wrecked him. He was flying by me, trying to do the same thing again, only this time I wasn’t asleep at the wheel. I let him think he was past when, at the last instant, I threw myself sideways. I caught him perfectly in the solar plexus with my shoulder, making him suck for air so hard it sounded like a little scream. I followed through on my check, like you’re supposed to, bouncing him off the boards. His stick flew into our bench. His helmet rolled fifty feet away. When the buzzer sounded to end the game, he lay on his side curled up like a cooked shrimp. That was my job. I was doing my job. Half the crowd whooped—my father being the whoopiest—but the other half booed me. It was a home game, and they booed me. They didn’t understand that even though the game was over, we still had to play these guys two more times this season, and this guy had to remember me. All they knew was that he was smaller than me. I didn’t like doing it. But I didn’t not like it, either. That’s basically how the whole season went. I’d blow hot and cold all year, from game to game. Some days I wanted to take everybody’s head off and win games all by myself. Other games I just wasn’t there. Thing is, I think on the outside it all looked the same to people, the way I played. I was always the Iceman, and I was the only one who knew the difference, so maybe it didn’t really matter.

This was purchased for a reluctant reader who enjoys hockey. The student enjoyed the book.

ty

good for school readers

Eric, the protagonist in Iceman, struggles through a difficult adolescence that can even be what some may label sociopath. His infatuation with death, his enjoyment of hurting people, and his lack of any connection to another person causes the reader to wonder if he has any emotion. Spending time at the local mortuary instead of attending school seems well beyond the average teenagers fascination with death. Even his brother's girlfriend, a high school dropout, finds his behavior peculiar. He makes mention of this obsession one day at church after killing a mouse."?I just smiled, weaved in and out of light sleep, occasionally pulling the dead mouse back out with my foot so I could look at him. When something's dead, I can?t help looking at it."(Lynch. P99) It seems when reading more carefully though the book, Eric's infatuation may be connected with his desire to retreat from the world he lives in. Sitting in a coffin is Eric's way of pretending he is dead and with death comes solitude, something that a controlling father and mother, constantly trying to save him, do not allow him to have. "Hope they thought I was a dead person and ran. I just wanted my peace anyway."(Lynch. 53) Eric's anger when he play?s hockey is apparent in the way his focus lies on "wrecking" the other players rather than winning the game. Even his teammates loathe him and refer to him as 'the animal' because he seems out of control. "I was the kind of guy who could sever another guy's head without feeling a thing. I was after all, the Iceman."(Lynch. 166) Is Eric really interested in causing pain? After all he's only playing hockey because his father is making him. The anger he exhibits during hockey seems to be displaced because he often states he isn?t even aware of his rage until he is sitting in the penalty box. "I broke a new Christian Brothers hockey stick. I broke it on somebody's head. He was a teammate of mine. The funny part is I don?t really remember being that angry."(Lynch. 69) Eric's desire to be close with his dad is apparent in the way he is constantly looking for another connection beyond hockey. Eric doesn't want to disappoint his father by telling him that hockey isn't as important anymore but he fears that that will take away the only channel their relationship is based upon. "I'm thinking?maybe we don?t have to talk about hockey right now. I'm thinking we may talk about something else. Like your job dad. I'm thinking about public relations. Can you tell me more about it? Do you like it? Is it interesting? How did you wind up in it? Is it something you always wanted?"(Lynch. 67) Overall Eric seems like a lost adolescent growing up in a dysfunctional family. He is being pushed into something that he does not like nor want to do. If he follows in his brother's footsteps and finds something else that is more appealing to him, he may end up all right after all.

One of the best sports novels ever! Fourteen year old Eric is a hockey player, though he is not sure he wants to be one. Caught in the dynamics of an EXTREMELY dysfunctional family, Eric struggles to find himself.Compelling characters. Lynch is a master of the relationships between brothers, and Duane is one of the best older-brother figures I have encountered in young adult fiction.

Why is this kid so messed up? This book was about a kid who played ice hockey, and he was a big goon. People all around the country knew who he was, and hated him for his style of play. Through the book it talked about his team and how he played in the different tournaments, and it was pretty good explination in the hockey perspective. This book was a fast read, but it didnt keep my attention. I just couldn't get into the book. I think that people should read this book if they are into hockey, or if they want a dramatic book that involves family problems, or if they would like to read a good book. I would recommend that you give this book a try, and who know's, you might even like it.Kody NoltBlock 3

“I never knew that this happened”Erika Lee’s America is the continent itself revealing Asian impact on South America and the Caribbean well before the formation of the USA but the bulk of the story is America’s treatment of what were viewed as the oriental – the other – and it is not a happy tale. That said, it is a beautifully written scholarly inquire into how Asians have been rejected, accepted, and have developed their own identities in a constantly changing political universe.Packed full of detail the reader may wish to skim and skip ahead but the delightful human tales along the way will likely suppress that urge. You will want to know how the forces being described can be resolved or blunted. Ignorance, hate, animosity and fear; pride, intelligence, compassion and resolve battle in our nation’s history to find their way; Lee doesn’t miss a beat. As she indicates at the end, the story is very much still in process as America becomes more Asian in composition and more global in direction. A good read.

Despite attempts to lump them together or tell their through a simplistic and monolithic “model minority” lens, Asian Americans and their histories are in fact exceedingly diverse and complicated. To be Asian American in the twenty-first century is an exercise in coming to terms with a contradiction: benefiting from new positions of power and privilege while still being victims of hate crimes and microaggressions that dismiss Asian American issues and treat Asian Americans as outsiders in their own country (Lee, 391).There seems to be an existential crisis every time an Asian American, like myself, attempts to answer “am I American (enough)?” If yes, then what do we mean by “American (enough)”? If no, then what prevents us? What has infected our imagination of who belongs and who does not in this so-called “Land of the Free”?America, seems to me, has a unique ability to remember things differently and selectively. Reading The Making of Asian America was a speechless experience — how have I never heard of these stories before? Truly, the phantasm of Asian American histories attests and perpetuates the non-visibility of Asian Americans. The reading was also heart-wrenchingly painful — oh, how much we, as a collected lump of diverse Asian Americans, suffered so much and so silently! One does not need to understand much of politics or policy making to see the one thing American history has made clear: things get done fast when — not if — people discriminate. Many preposterous laws, such as you have to be born in the states and be of white skin tone (many early petitions and appeals have been shut down because Chinese or Japanese Americans born in the States do not shimmer white tones; there was even one Middle Eastern who argued on the grounds that he is actually a caucasian but was still denied), have passed and lasted because of unbated fear and hatred.Of course, Asian Americans are not without faults and blame. I cannot blame all of America, where my citizenship is tethered to, for my own ignorance of our checkered histories. This is not to say reading and learning history solve moral corruption — far be it! Rather, history provides both a window and mirror: a window to our expansive past, enriched with valuable resources for virility and grace, and a mirror to match and differentiate how our current situations, personal and public, relate to prior ones. Matching and differentiating are crucial for understanding the complicated nature of diagnosing personal and social ills and implementing prescribed healing. In short, learning history must be paired with both constructive-critical lens and untiring hands and feet. The Making of Asian America is a must read. Do not be stumped by its length (402 pages). By the time you finish, you’ll wish she wrote more.sooholee.wordpress

I was concerned that the book might be a condensed history of what had already been written but Dr. Lee's walkthrough of ethnic Asian and Pacific Islander immigration to the United State from before its founding to the present day was an enlightening experience with several eye-opening insights and examples. Dr. Lee shows that it is possible for an author to show injustices with facts and not the conjecture that is used on the other side of the spectrum to drum up fear and hate that has led us to this current crisis.

I loved this book! It gives a frank view of history, and how the Asian Americans in the country helped shape it. This isn't very mainstream history, and the modern times part of the book I was less enamored with, with the author seemingly glossing over but implying innocence of many criminals, some of which I knew the cases very well and was disturbed at what she left out, but overall it is a quick and easy read, and as long as you do your research and don't take this book as 1000% un-biased truth, you should learn some amazing things about history!

The primary value of this work is that it is the first comprehensive overview of Asian America as living communities or fragments as well as record of experience. I wish it were more analytical in at least raising the question as to how heritage awareness persists and works in tandem with adaptation and change, something we understand rather extensively in the case of German American heritage culture expression.

As everyone says, this book is an eye opener for those of us who hadn't realized the struggles Asian immigrants have endured in coming to the U.S., as this is not often discussed in the general media. This book focuses on injustices and anti-Asian biases in American history to the present, and activism in response to these conditions, so other issues are only peripherally addressed. Comprehensive and wide-ranging, this is an overview, an introduction, and reads like a text book--not what I would call "beautifully written" at all--but it is clear, to-the-point, and accomplishes its purpose of calling serious attention to important issues concerning significant numbers of people. One has to admire and applaud the sheer effort it must have taken to bring this study into existence.

Beautifully written and well structured, the making of Asian America tells the epic and sweeping histories of entire generations of Asians as they struggled for acceptance and identity. Lee tells the history like a storyteller and has the facts to back it up. Neat anecdotes are sprinkled in to put events into context. The book is never dry and moves from topic to topic with clarity. Overall, a great book to spark interest in a history that is rarely told by mainstream media.

A must read for anyone who is interested about the Asian community's influence in the United States... Especially with all the hardships faced
