Although the murder of the author is what first called my attention to this book, it deserves to be reviewed on its own merits, and it does have some. Richard Antoun's 40 years of experience observing a Muslim community in Jordan gave him ample opportunity to observe Islam. His family background and exposure to Christianity and conversion to Judaism gave him a vantage point to notice the similarities between the three major Monotheistic religions extant today. He lucidly describes the 7 criteria he uses to determine the fundamentalist nature of a sect and gives an even handed overview of his research. As a Christian, it was enlightening to discover how my particular denomination is characterized by an "outsider." Some of us take the verse about being "peculiar people" a bit too much to heart. He didn't make outrageous accusations, or any other type of accusation, but merely recorded his observations. I hope that's not what got him killed, but it might be worth noting that his murderer was neither Christian nor Jewish. He wasn't trying to offend, merely to inform and instruct. Dangerous practices these days, it would seem.

I have previewed this book in google previews. It appears to be a factual account of the authors interactions with individuals who are fundamentalist in their approach to their Islamic faith. I will be using it in my course at a community college this Spring, entitled 'Introduction to Cultural Anthropology'. I believe this is a book for our time given the US military incursions in Pakistan and Afghanistan. We can never know enough about other culture's points of view, and how those points of view lead to action. I am very saddened by Professor Antouns death and send condolences to his family.

The author of this book was murdered today by Abdulsalam S. al-Zahrani in his office at Binghampton University.

Great book to have along for reference. Will be a little inaccurate after the aircrack and nmap updates, but easy enough to adjust code

These are all fun and stuff, but there needs to be a few actual reviews.This book is essentially a decade's worth of notes from an experienced network security engineer or pen tester. It looks like someone published an evernote notebook. Formatting is inconsistent and at times confusing. There is a fair amount of duplication. Placeholders are inconsistent. There is no descriptive text or explanatory notes. It is a list of commands, and nothing more.If you are an experienced command line user, it is pretty awesome.That said, with around 2000 commands in the book, there in exactly one page of index. It is impossible to find anything. If it is windows, that's great, narrows things down to about 30 pages that you have to flip through to find what you want. Even though I often know exactly what I am looking for, I still end up flipping through nearly every page in the book to find it. That is frustrating.It's true that everything here can be found elsewhere online, but that's a lot like saying that a thesaurus is just a list of words that you can find online. The proper formatting of actually useful DOS net commands, for instance, is a great example of why the book is more useful than a Google search.I'd say this is pretty much a must-own book for anyone that has to work with computers. If you are in charge of security or testing, even better. I wish it was better indexed, but can't have everything. Certainly worth the money.

This pamphlet (not really a book at 83 pages) is a good reference for those who don't use these tools on a regular basis. Covers (VERY briefly) Linux/Unix tools, Windows tools, and exploits used against web servers, databases, and wireless networks. This read will not make you a hacker by any stretch of the imagination. Simply a quick reference for tools used by power users, system admins and pen testers.The one big gripe I have with it is the print. It's hard enough to read in full daylight, let alone sitting in a dimly lit room with nothing but the glow of your LED monitor for light.

This is a reference book that already presumes you know what you're doing with penetration testing and tools related to that. It's not going to teach you what to do or how to use various tools, but what it will do is be a handy, organized place to lookup a command that you may have forgotten how to use. For that 5 stars all the way. If there's any criticism I guess the type could be a bit larger. Maybe all the info in it is available online in other places. But having it all in one place is very handy. This is a compact, well organized reference that every pen tester should own.

Very slight book, much more comprehensive references exist - this is all very available information. Still, a small subset could have proved useful - except that the binding make the book impossible to lie flat, and even if you can manage to read the headings, the text will elude you. Tiny, 4-5 pt gray font - make this book pretty useless. Will be returning since I already have books with this information...and I can actually read the type without a magnifying glass.

Great reference, though it's already showing age (some commands won't work, even for the latest operating systems). But the gist of the commands is correct and the thought processes behind it them are clear and easy to understand while pen testing, so a quick Google is a good remedy for some of the more obscure ones. Maybe needs a new updated version soon? Otherwise fantastic.

This is a skinny little book but it's packed with all kinds of useful information. I feel pretty comfortable in both a windows command prompt and a linux terminal and many of these items in this book are completely new to me. Great resource.

These books are almost a must for pentesting. Many times when I am in a hurry due to time constraints I will forget a command syntax. Since I tabbed this book and used it, the book has paid for itself over 20 times. Getting the Blue book next

This product has all those little things that elude human memory in one place. If you're a penetration tester or network administrator, this is a great "reference" to keep in your kit bag. It will help you avoid searching the Internet for that one article you read one time 10 years ago by showing you the relevant options for the command line command you're trying to use on the page in front of you. Also has a ton of network references (like the CIDR blocking to bits to subnet masks stuff). If you can do most of it in your head, but need the occasional memory boost, this book is a GREAT companion.

Thich Nhat Hanh is, in my opinion, the greatest Buddhist teacher and author of modern times. His ability to clearly communicate some very difficult and often misunderstood topics/concepts is remarkable. He makes the Heart Sutra, which is very brief but packed with meaning, accessible to anyone with a desire to understand.

I was looking for a book to give to my daughter to help her with her social skills. She is 14 and does not have a diagnosis, but had shared with me that she struggles with certain social skills ( such as being aware that the feelings of others might be different than her own, or how to support a friend who is going through a difficult time). A lot of the books out there about improving your social skills are either too clinical, aimed at younger kids, or are meant for professionals looking to network better. I read this through before giving it to my daughter. I like the author's overall approach and the constant emphasis on sincerity and kindness in relationships. He presents social skills in terms of fairly easy to remember principles, rather than a lot of theory, abstract ideas, or case studies (there are some personal examples though). Although the target audience seems to be young adults, I found that it was very appropriate for my daughter. I was a little nervous about the chapter on relationships, but was relieved that the author's values align fairly well with my own and I felt comfortable with my daughter reading it. My daughter hasn't shared with me her thoughts about it ( but that's par for the course with her) but she was happy about the idea of having a book to refer to. It was actually a revelation to her that social skills are something that she can learn more about and get better at. I work in the special education field, and I will be recommending this book to students and parents.

While many guides will tell you to go out and make friends, or to engage someone in conversation, or to make eye contact, they don't explain exactly how to go about each of those activities. In Improve Your Social Skills, author Daniel Wendler breaks down each component of social interaction in a way that is friendly, understandable, and practical.While many guides meticulously go through each and every body signal a person may project, this guide simply breaks down body language into two categories - "open" and "closed." Done! Now instead of over-analyzing someone's body language, I can focus on the other person and the conversation!While many guides promote tricks and gimmicks to put people down and artificially project confidence, Improve Your Social Skills stresses the importance of respect and relationship. I don't have to pretend to be someone else or put on airs or play a part. Instead, this guide encourages me to be my best self and make fruitful and lasting friendships with others to help them be their best selves, too.Although it would have been nice to see some tips or examples regarding workplace behavior and professionalism, I love this guide for the subjects it does cover. This guide is unlike any other, and I can't recommend it enough.

This is a fantastic book for getting started on social skills. I work as a mental health counselor in Portland, OR and I often work with individuals with disabilities. And whether there's the presence of a disability or not, this book has served as a great resource for clients looking to work on their social skills. For professionals who are browsing: this book (and Daniel's website) can serve as a great independent resource for clients or the skills in the book can serve as a great jumping-off point or structure for when you're seeing a client. Daniel differentiates and concretizes each skill masterfully enough that it is easy to use parts (or all) of the book in a way that is tailored to the client in front of you. I'm happy I took a chance on this book!

This is not your usual learning how to make conversation book. The author writes simply and is very encouraging. I now have a better understanding of conversational skills and am putting to use what I learned here. My only complaint is that this book, as well as many others I have read lately, needs better proofreading! Years ago you never saw mistakes in a book. Now I find mistakes all the time. What's going on?

This book is wonderful! Lays out a very solid ground work to build on. I transitioned from this book to How to Talk to Anyone: 92 Little Tricks for Big Success in Relationships by Leil Lowndes and both compliment each other so well.

This book by Daniel Wendler could just as well be entitled: The Thinking Person’s Guide to Improving Your Social Skills. I say that because of the methodical, thoughtful and flowing way the author guides us through the complex maze of social interactions in which we find ourselves.I found the conversational process of using questions, which the author calls “invitations,” and the telling of something from our own experience that opens the conversation up for our partner to comment on or question, which the author calls “inspirations,” to be very helpful when breaking down the dynamic of a conversation.Being frequently in situations that require entering into a group conversation, such as at dinner parties or professional meetings, the section on helpful ways to enter into those group conversations, and also on the importance of including others in group conversations that we have already entered into, was very useful.One part of the book speaks to gauging the “energy level” of the person or group that you are entering into a conversation with. This is something I hadn’t thought of before, but is going to become an important part of my own process of entering into conversations and relationships.Finally, the chapters on meeting new friends and how to decide if those friendships are going to be healthy, along with how to maintain and nurture those relationships was the most satisfying to me personally. I have found that as you age, the process of identifying who might be a good friend and then figuring out how to maintain that friendship along with all the other priorities of life can be very difficult. I plan on utilizing the helpful information in those chapters to gain a new friendship and to nurture it once started.Bravo on a great book Daniel!

Too many mistakes. Words in the British column are words I use as an American. The reason why is that English grammar has declined here so much that the "new" English is considered only American. Example: donut. I spell it doughnut as is listed in the British column. sincerely, Janis Wital

I bought this as a gift for an american friend and he really enjoyed it. However reading it as a British person I didn't think everything in it was accurate...many of the British words/phrases were things I'd never heard, having lived in England my whole life. Still it was a fun gift. The book is quite small (roughly A5).

This book didn't have any of the British slang I was looking for. (from a book I was reading), but it is pretty basic with some of the more commonly used slang Americans may come across.

My family and I have gotten a fun from this book. The grandkids enjoy looking up things to say to each other. This book also helps one to understand some of the English phrases while enjoying the Brit sitcoms and movies.

I love it. So many funny phrases for different things people say. I finally found a language I can learn and understand LOL

Still missing some words, that I tend to hear allot when I am over in Great Britain, which is often. but all in all its a very good book.

This was a well received gift for a millennial who expects to travel to GB in the next few months.
