I learned so much about the history of some of the middle east region as well as the current issues. But it read like a novel with well drawn,Well developed characters. The author inserted herself into the book in a very subtle and humble manner that felt authentic to the story. Parts of it were melodramatic and too tinged with her own strong feelings for the characters but I get why she has these feelings. Maybe it was a bit too much of a catharsis for the trouble the author experienced. I am nitpicking here, though. She is brave and honest. While she claims her work, writing about the middle east struggle, will never change the problem, I think she is being modest. This story needed to be told and likely affected the lives of many people. No one can fix the problems alone but she has surely done her part. My perception of the region has changed. This book is learning disguised as fun.
Excellent book about the woman reporter who goes to Syria to live with the Iraqi refugees that are there. Her experiences and writing is well worth the read for anyone interested in the Middle East and History that is happening today.
This book should be required reading for anyone drawn to thoughts of the glories of war. This is but one story of millions of civilians (and soldiers!) whose lives are forever destroyed or deeply scarred by absurd and senseless human warfare. Will it never end?
