And why is an old school 'friend' he hasn't seen in 20-odd years suddenly reappeared in his life?Using the timeless theme of the Stevenson classic story: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as background Rubart weaves a wonderful tale of self-discovery of exploring the good and evil within each of us. And how we can claim victory over the evil or Mr Hyde-part of our personality.I so enjoyed how Rubart addressed the theme in story. This is powerful story-telling and be great to see more novels fowling a similar bent of exploring how the Holy Spirit can indeed transform us from the inside out. The fruit of the Spirit of Galatians 2:22-23 is indeed available to us but only through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit as Romans 12:2 outlines.Like all Rubart novels there's a bit of supernatural activity that can appear a little weird and out of place, however, in the context of the transformative power of the Holy Spirit he probably didn't have any other choice in being able to show the change in Toren's personality in such a short period of time. Something drastic did have to occur. In reality, it's unlikely that engrained habits can be transformed in such a short period of time. But, hey, this is fiction.Toren and his estranged wife, Sloane, were excellent characters. There were some tremendous scenes featuring the two of them that showed the juxtaposition between what they once had, their current state and the possibility of a new improved version.As an aside, I was reading this novel while I was on a 5 day retreat where I was studying and practicing models of personal transformation and it was fabulous to read something fictional that demonstrated the power of transformation. I'm sure this was part of the reason I so enjoyed the story and in particular, the themes Rubart addresses in it.Very highly recommended.

This book transformed my life!Anyone who knows me well knows that saying I love to read is an understatement. I couldn’t begin to try to count the number of books I have read in my 55 years. Just now I finished my favorite book, other than the Bible, that I have ever read in my life! If I had the money I would give a copy to everyone willing to read it with their hearts and not just their heads. It was more than mind blowing! It was heart restoring. I believe with my heart that God lead this man to write this book! The Man He Never Was by James Rubart will take you on a journey through a man’s life and in a way your life and mine!

Rubart continues to grow in craftsmanship as a writer of meaningful stories. If you try to compare his newest release to his most recent successes, "The Five Times I Met Myself" or "The Long Journey to Jake Palmer," you could easily miss that Rubart has a gift of building fictional characters that mirror our real-life struggles. The characters may not always be likable, but they are authentic.In "The Man He Never Was," you'll meet Toren, a has-been football player struggling with a larger-than-life temper that is about to cost him everything that he is only just beginning to realize that he needs in his life. Almost as quickly as you meet Toren, you're going to become frustrated with him. He is not an endearing protagonist. You'll probably also become frustrated with the dialogue in this book as well. I did. Although I did not initially want to root for Toren, I wanted answers. I wanted resolution, but the book seemed to be going nowhere for a while. There was an endless stream of questions from Toren in the midst of his struggles. He asks the questions that the reader is thinking, but the questions are often only answered with other cryptic questions from people trying to "help" as Toren struggles to find meaning, if not hope, through his circumstances.It is through the frustration of trying to decipher these cryptic conversations that the reader begins to empathize with Toren and consequently to see yourself as Toren. How Rubart is able to do that is commendable. Don't overlook that. There are countless authors who fall short of this ability in their writing. Rubart uses the blueprint of Robert Louis Stephenson's Jekyll and Hyde to pen this story, but this idea was not original with Stephenson. In Romans 7, Paul describes his own struggle to do what is right in his life. It is easier said than done. It is easier to resolve than to live it out. Especially when met with test after test that will only strengthen or weaken your faith. Toren experiences just that throughout this book.If you've enjoyed Rubart's other works, he has earned your trust to read this one as well, even though it is a different kind of book. (If you haven't read his other books, they are even better than this one!) Whereas his other successful books seem to have an air of mystery and magic and hope in the plot, this one seems to be missing the magic and hope. Seems to be. However, Rubart uses this to open your eyes to the plight of Toren, who also had no hope, and it is only if you are able to experience that in these pages that you are able to eventually discover the same truth that Toren discovers.I hope Rubart has a sequel in the works.

James Rubart is so good w/his books in bringing to us the truth inside of us. This story deals w/Dr Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. The two sides of ourselves deep in us that lead us to our inner most selves. Where we battle between our good and evil that drives each of us.Toren Daniels wakes one morning in a strange hotel room and has no idea how he got there!! In trying to figure out what has happened, he notices something else.....he feels peaceful instead of edge waiting to lose control? This is so unlike him and he wonders what has happened to him. Thankfully, he receives a package from the main desk that gives him a little info. In time, he goes home and finds out they thought he had died. He had been gone for 8 months!!!!The rest of the story is finding out where he was and what he must do to finally be rid of Mr. Hyde. Follow his journey and see if he receives healing and if he gets his life back!!! God does remarkable things in his life and draws him closer to God!!!! Rubarts books are u forgettable!!!!! As a fan of Nick & Lisa’s true crime books I am delighted to see they have now focused their attention on one of the biggest mysteries of our time: what happened to Madeleine McCann? Their new book DOUBT is exactly what I have come to expect from this author and editor: a fine intuitive analysis of an enormous amount of information, leading to a tentative but very plausible conclusion. It is refreshing to see the Portugese police inquiry validated. A mythological flavour is added through the symbol of the raven, woven as a black thread of DOUBT though the narrative. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it’s very good.

This was a great read - could not put it down! What a talented team of writers, investigators and ‘people-readers’

Great research. I didn't know a lot of this. I liked the links that linked to the actual you tube videos and articles. I don't like that I have to buy 2 books to get the full story though (or their version of it, rather). They do make a pretty good case.

I just bought this book, and I’m not sure I’m going to be able to read much further because the writing is so terrible. This is my first book from this author, and it will likely be my last. As a true crime reader, I want to read about the crime, suspects, theories, justice system, etc. I don’t want to have to search for those things among mixed, tortured metaphors, random block quotes from the internet that have nothing to do with the case, and language so flowery that it makes Grammy’s chintz couch look plain (see, this is how you appropriately use metaphors). If you’re going to try to be erudite and weave a poetic metaphor throughout a nonfiction book (why?), you don’t need to reference it every third or fourth sentence. We get it already. I’d rather go back and read the tortoise chapters of The Grapes of Wrath that I skipped in 8th grade rather than have to read another sentence about this silly raven.For a contemporary author that can write true crime in a gripping, narrative fashion, see Erik Larson. This is not a la Erik Larson.

I read DOUBT by Nick van der Leek as a Kindle Unlimited selection.It is a convoluted assortment of selected segments from I, Claudius, interspersed with looks at random pieces of the case of missing toddler Madelaine McCann. Also included are black raven analogies meant to represent....something...I couldn't quite grasp. The point is lost in translation.Mix all that together with reading this on my cell phone, where there's no distinguishing feature to seperate a quote or blackbird story from the McCann story, and it reads as a jumble of information. It's incredibly confusing.Needless to say, any real points or new details in the actual McCann case are lost in the shuffle of perpetual confusion and mutinae. I lost interest in trying to make sense of it all midway through.

I am fascinated by true crime, but somehow I didn't know much about the case of Maddy McCann. Being a fan of Nick and Lisa's other narratives I gave Doubt a go. I am not disappointed! What a story. Every bit as creepy and frustrating as the unsolved case of Jonbenet Ramsey - with some similar features, as Nick points out. I enjoy the artistry in the story telling and I'll be the first in line when Doubt part 2 is released!

Love anything by Nick van der Leek. He is very concise and does a lot of research. All of his books are very good. Makes you really think!

It was fantastic. Started and read in one sitting. Can not wait till #2. I'm gonna be thinking about this book for a few days.

I have been working on computers and the net since way back when (tempted to make a joke here about AL GORE) ... my back ground includes web design, software programming, 3d animation and a small amount of hardware design. If you get the idea I am an old dude, you would be right as I am pushing 70 very hard. From the moment I opened this book I started learning stuff, new stuff, great ideas. In my dotage, I have become interested in robots and 3d printers (insert star trek reference here) and this book lays out information in easy to understand bits. It does help if you have had some programing experience but is not necessary as the writer explains bit by bit, in step by step process how the languages you use to program microcomputers work and how to get things talking to each other both hardware and software. I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to break into microcomputers or build the internet of things. Its a very well written and well done book.

Like many of the Make books, this one too is source for learning and inspiring hand-on projects. The examples might or might not be of any use to you but they certainly teach you how to network together laptops, internet and arduino. True, there are many examples and tutorials for free on online forums and blogs, but it is scattered around too much while this book collects all you need to know in one volume, with a clear formatting and nice and explanatory pictures, plus tons of other useful information.I must agree with another reviewer that I don't favor the choice of Processing for the laptop applications: instead, I had liked to see Python too, and I had liked the author to show how to build a LAMP server on our own computer.Bottom line: this book is superb and I highly recommend it.

I'm a programmer by profession, and concepts inside this book continue to cross into my day job from night hacking with Arduino. Mr. Igoe could have edited out many concepts not really required for completion of the many cool projects inside this book, but he chose to complete this book with his expansive writing, motivating the reader to approach new horizons of knowledge with accurate and pleasurable topics. This is a must read for the novice Arduino hacker.

Lots of details, and good examples. Includes a basic description of how networks are configured. Also describes the basics of wireless. Great to have a book about the whys and not just the hows.

You can learn a lot from this book if you overlook the funky projects and don't let it turn you off. For example, a lot of knowledge is in the Pong project but I can do without the monkey. A couple of 10K pots will suffice. I also am not too fond of cats. That being said...the book is well worth having if you are trying to learn how Arduino and Processing can communicate with each other. It covers a variety of communication protocols. I can recommend it if you can stick your tongue in your cheek and soldier on. The author really does know his subject matter.As one other reviewer said - you can't judge this book by its cover (toy monkeys?...I guess I don't have much of a sense of humor but I am glad I bought the book).

A compelling story of courage and resilience told masterfully by an incredibly gifted writer with great insight into the human condition. This is an inspirational story about normal people, who when faced with a horrible fate showed that they could rise above it and show us what genuine heroism really is. While it deals with a complex disease, the writer carefully explains its aspects in language that most anyone can understand and appreciate.

I read about this book in our Sunday paper and ordered it after reading an excerpt included in the article. I found the book fascinating. Interesting mix of science and human interest. If You don't care about the science, you can skip those chapters and still be captivated by the story.

A spellbinding story of a family caught in the web of a fatal genetic disease. Well written and intentional in content. It made me thankful my children do not have to have their lives suspended like Amanda's family does.

A fantastic telling of a horrible story and a horrible disease. It takes real guts to share this experience and Gina does a great job of weaving the narrative in a way that keeps you reading. It was hard to put down.

Absolutely one of the most inspiring biographies I ever read. Right in my hometown.

Always knew I was living a dream And then I read this. It makes me even more grateful and aware of good health.

If I could rate this book a 10, I would. This is honestly the best book I have read in quite sometime. It is an incredibly personal and honest look into a family's life dealing with a devastating and terminal hereditary disease that few doctors know anything about. And how their journey has led them to do anything and everything they can to fight back, no matter how diffult or controversial it may be.

I enjoyed this book vey much it was a quick read and was of interest to me as a former Medical Lab tech.It is the story of how a genetic anomaly passed on for many generations affected a small town family in the South.It is also the struggle of how one young woman dealt with this disease .A very good and absorbing medical mystery.
