Being big on history, I was really excited to find a series of books that present historical figures and events to babies and toddlers. This may sound crazy, but the books hold my son's attention and they have even come in handy. For example, the Jefferson, Lincoln, and Washington books were great for our trip to Washington, D.C. We could visit the monuments and then read him something at his level about who the people were and why we remember them. The events are obviously very simplified, but they do a good job of explaining things in a way that is easy for young kids to understand. The pictures are all fine as well. On the whole, if you are someone who nejoys history, then you should get these books.Story of George WashingtonThe Story of Abraham LincolnThe Story of Martin Luther King Jr.The Story of "the Star-Spangled Banner"The Story of America's Birthday

My toddler is currently 21 months and he is loving all this series. I know some concepts are too elevated for him at this age, but he knows and identifies the founding fathers now, he knows they loved to read and that they were great Americans. This is the type of book that will teach him different things as he gets older.

Bought this to introduce our 2 yr old twin grandchildren to history and it was surprising how much they have loved it and learned from it. Great for introducing children to history. Had also bought similar books for George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and they loved those as well.

Great for young readers. Simple version.

I love these history board books. These books are clear, concise, and easy to read. The present the important aspects accompanied with nice illustrations! What a great thing to own and introduce kids too! I think the test is good for 2-4+ year olds!

My 18 month old grandson loves these books. He also has Washington and Lincoln and will pick out the correct book if you tell him to go get a book by name.

Children can begin to learn about good leaders from young ages. We need good leaders.

Review

From the reviews: "Chow … has successfully filled the gap in the literature between introductory texts for lay readers interested in cosmology and advanced works. Chow’s book is aimed at undergraduates but is accessible to all readers … . Chapters can stand alone for quick reference, yet the book’s progressive nature makes it a viable course resource for supporting all physics curricula. … this work will be suitable for all science libraries and collections. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers; lower-division undergraduates through graduate students." (J. H. Murphy, CHOICE, Vol. 45 (8), 2008) "This book has its roots in the lecture notes of Professor Chow, who taught an undergraduate course in relativity and cosmology … . I was interested by the ideas and the historical aspects developed … on the inflationary universe and the physics of the very early universe. … The book may be useful for general information on cosmology and to a physicist already well prepared in general relativity and cosmology to prepare a course on these subjects." (Fernande Grandjean, Belgian Physical Society Magazine, Issue 2, June, 2009)

From the Back Cover

In the early 1900s, Albert Einstein formulated two theories that would forever change the landscape of physics: the Special Theory of Relativity and the General Theory of Relativity. By 1925, quantum mechanics had been born out of the dissection of these two theories, and shortly after that, relativistic quantum field theory. We now had in place some important ties between the laws of physics and the types of particle interactions the new physics was uncovering. Gravity is one of the four types of forces that are found throughout the universe. In fact, although it is a relatively weak force, it operates at huge distances, and so must be accounted for in any cosmological system. Unfortunately, gravity continues to defy our neat categorization of how all the forces in nature work together. Professor Tai Chow, from the California State University at Stanislaus in Turlock, lays out for us the basic ideas of Einstein, including his law of gravitation, explains the physics behind black holes, and weaves into this an absorbing account an explanation of the structure of the universe and the science of cosmology, including presenting the various models of the Big Bang, the Inflationary Universe, and the Unification of Forces. Travel with him down this engaging path to reach some fascinating conclusions, which raise even more interesting questions for the future of astronomy and physics. Says Dr. Mark Silverman of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut: "The author … introduces the mathematical methods essential to understanding and applying general relativity…but leaves to more advanced references derivations that a beginning student would likely find overly long and tedious…. In this way the student can concentrate on learning physics ….A strong point [is] the comprehensive discussion of the physics of black holes. Here again the author has hit just the right level of presentation: sufficient mathematical detail to demonstrate …the physical attributes of black holes…yet not so much mathematics as to lose track of the physics in an impenetrable forest of equations. An equally strong point is the discussion of the most exciting contemporary issues in astrophysics apart from black holes…"

This is a nice little way to present the idea of evolution. The story is about one ledge on a cliff, how it went through seasons of change, and how finally one day it cracked off, turned into boulders, then rocks, and finally became sand. Needless to say, it's not the most exciting graphic novel you'll ever read--most pictures are just pictures of rocks, cliffs, a seagull, a crab commenting on the rock. But while it may not be the most exciting graphic novel, it might be the most exciting presentation of how sand is made from a cliff. This book in combination with a movie about the Grand Canyon, a field trip to find rocks at a creek bed, smoothing off rocks in a rock tumbler, my 7-year-old daughter has found erosion very interesting.

Very informative, and in a creative way that kids love it.

Really good book to use when teaching about weathering, erosion, deposition etc... If you need some additional easy reading Earth Science for your student library this is a good addition.

I found this book preparing a geology exploration for 2nd graders. It works very well at that level. Read it yourself first, ou may want to change what you highlight.

Great book for introducing science concepts.

A great book to begin teaching about erosion. Pictures support the text. Great explanations of cause and effect, as well as vocabulary exposure.A great read aloud.

Bright colors, engaging illustrations... my son loves this book! Great for any budding scientist!

If the effect of artificial intelligence on warfare interests you, Mr. Scharre's book provides a comprehensive review of the subject from a practical, technological and ethical perspective. The Army Futures Command has just opened its headquarters in Austin, Texas, with a plan to ensure that the Army is prepared to fight the wars of the future. If this book is not on their reading list, it should be.Here are a few of the topics that the book covers. First, U.S. Army Ranger Scharre addresses the importance of "context" in combat by drawing on some of his experiences in combat in Afghanistan. The 7 year old girl sent by possibly hostile Afghans to recon his unit's position during an operation in Afghanistan. Under the definitions of war Ranger Scharre and his unit could have shot her, but they didn't because she looked to be about 7 years old. Would an autonomous weapon with the power to kill have made the same decision? Probably not.The book examines the question of "what is autonomy?" Not all nations define it the same way. What weapons have been built and used that could be considered autonomous. Some exist. Robots and drones - how are these being developed by the Pentagon and by private parties using off-the-shelf parts and software. Can autonomous weapons be used safely and, if they are used, what are the risks? Speed may be critical. If your opponent uses weapons that simply act faster than any human could, the likelihood is that other combatants will use these weapons as well.Does mankind "summon the demon" by building and deploying these machines? The book has a lengthy review of the parties and persons fighting to ban these weapons. If also looks at the effectiveness of various weapons bans both in the last century and over hundreds of years. Arms control has a very mixed history. One possible development may be the centaur warfighter - man plus machine. How do we control the warfighting capacities of machines with ever more capable artificial intelligence? My sense is that the range of outcomes will be tilted from "only with great difficulty" to "we can't."I was surprised by some of the information in the book, but I hadn't looked at the subject before. I found the author to be very candid, well read, and open in his presentation of the present condition of autonomous weapons. If you have an interest in the topic, I believe that the book will reward your time. Five stars.

I read widely on AI and selected this book due to its ratings and a sample. My background includes ten years as a designer of control and safety systems for complex processes. This book definitely encompasses the whole spectrum of issues about autonomous weapons, including picking up bits from many high risk industries. These end up scattered about like little nuggets. There is significant discussion of the ethics and morals of accidents, and some of the politics of controlling technology.I found this a difficult read. Though the sections appeared to break this down into specific areas, the content within each section was often a mix of material that logically could have been elsewhere. There didn't appear to be an obvious reason for the ordering of the sections. Finally, the writing style was workmanlike, which is acceptable but not helpful when such a complex issue is the subject.I gave the book three stars because it was content rich but needed better execution to achieve its mission - whatever that may have been.

As a former U.S. Army ranger and a current Pentagon defense expert, Paul Scharre clearly explores the strategic, legal, and ethical pros and cons of the three degrees of autonomy, i.e. sophistication and intelligence, in weapons systems.Autonomous weapon systems can be subdivided into:1) semi-autonomous weapon systems (human in the loop), e.g. the homing munitions;2) supervised autonomous weapon systems (human on the loop), e.g. the U.S. ship-based Aegis combat system;3) fully autonomous operating weapon systems (human out of the loop), e.g., the Israeli Harpy.Mr. Scharre convincingly demonstrates to his audience that artificial intelligence (AI) systems can outsmart humans in narrow tasks but fall short of humans in general intelligence. For example, the U.S.-led coalition lost several aircrafts due to U.S. Patriot fratricides during the second Gulf War. In reality, the blame for these fratricides was to be assigned to the weapon system …. and some of its human operators who lack the required critical mindset to make the right calls.Furthermore, the degree of autonomy granted to weapon systems does not exist in a vacuum. It also depends on what the (potential) adversaries of the U.S. are able and willing to do for gaining an edge on the U.S. This arm race could ultimately undermine the idealized centaur model of human-machine teaming in war.Unsurprisingly, some non-profit organizations and smaller states strive for deliberately banning fully autonomous weapons due to what they consider the accountability gap in their performance. Think for example about crisis stability, escalation control, and war termination. These non-profit organizations and smaller states consider the international humanitarian law (IHL) principles of distinction, proportionality, and other rules insufficient in the presence of fully autonomous weapons. In a nutshell, their template is the generally successful bans on land mines and cluster munitions. Alternatively, some form of regulations on the use of fully autonomous weapons could come from the countries with the most to lose from a total ban, i.e. those with the most advanced military. In the meantime, technology in autonomous weapon systems presses forward at full speed.

"The book should be an essential text for students and researchers interested in altimetry and would serve well as a companion text for a graduate-level course on satellite remote sensing."--EOS, Transactions, AGU, Vol. 82, No. 34, 2001"Altimetry has interacted, even revolutionized, our understanding of marine geodesy and seafloor topography, of ocean circulation, surface and internal waves, ice sheets and sea level rise; given that altimetry interacts so broadly with diverse ocean disciplines, this book serves as a text on modern oceanography." --Walter Munk, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla"...summarizes all major aspects of satellite altimetry and its applications to physical oceanography, geodesy and marine geophysics. ...a comprehensive volume and thereby a helpful source of reference for anybody involved in satellite altimetry related research."--JOURNAL OF GEODESY, 2001"This book gives a detailed description of the techniques and applications of this subject. ...should appeal to researchers and students in the field."--BULLETIN OF THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY, November 2001"This book will serve as an excellent handbook and reference for those interested in applying satellite altimetry to hydrospheric and geodetic sciences, and can also serve as a textbook for a graduate level course in satellite remote sensing or satellite oceanography.... It is well written, logically organized and provides a wealth of reference material for the practicing researcher and student. The discussions are well supported with the appropriate level of mathematical rigor and contain numerous illuminating figures and graphics...we consider Chapter 1 of the book especially valuable. In this chapter, one finds detailed discussions of the main techniques and principles behind radar altimetry followed by an explanation of the steps and corrections required to turn these data into accurate estimates of sea level as well as wave heights and wind speed. We know of no other reference work like this chapter, which gives such detailed explanations of all aspects of satellite radar altimetry. The breadth and detail of Chapter 1 alone justify obtaining this book."--PURE AND APPLIED GEOPHYSICS"Editors Fu and Cazenave have done a great service to the earth sciences by compiling this testament to a single instrument's ability to shape science. It will appeal to a wide audience of earth science professionals and advanced undergraduate or graduate students, as well as to students of remote sensing...I plan to keep a copy on my shelf."--Kathryn Kelly, BULLETIN OF THE AMERICAN METEROLOGICAL SOCIETY, July 2002

"Altimetry has interacted, even revolutionized, our understanding of marine geodesy and seafloor topography, of ocean circulation, surface and internal waves, ice sheets and sea level rise; given that altimetry interacts so broadly with diverse ocean disciplines, this book serves as a text on modern oceanography." -- Walter Munk, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La JollaSatellite Altimetry and the Earth Sciences: Handbook of Techniques and Applications is a comprehensive treatise on the fundamental principles of satellite altimetry and features earth science applications ranging from oceanography to geodesy and geophysics. The first chapter details how the height of the sea surface is determined with centimeter accuracy from the travel time of radar signals transmitted from space. Subsequent chapters review how sea surface height measurements are manipulated to estimate ocean circulation and tides, heat storage in the ocean in relation to El Niño and La Niña, the earth's gravity field and its tectonic features, and the depth of the ocean. These applications and the challenges of employing altimeters to detect long-term changes in sea level and ice sheets are discussed in this authoritative handbook of techniques and applications.* First text devoted to the technique of satellite altimetry* Complete description of the fundamentals of satellite altimetry * Applications include global ocean circulation and its changes from El Niño, global sea level rise, global tidal maps, sea surface topography and the earth's gravity field and plate tectonics, high-resolution ocean bathymetry, and long-term monitoring of ocean waves and ice sheets.

I love when an author can take us beyond the typical fantasy of wizards and dragons and transport the reader to a whole new world. Sanderson does that with Warbreaker. A world where magic exists in the form of breaths which can be given from one person to another (at great cost) and where living gods exist among the people.A complex plot that is brought together neatly at the end and I have to say that I didn't see it coming.I highly recommend this if you are looking for imaginative and clever writing.

Warbreaker is, thus far, my favorite book written by Brandon Sanderson.Although I feel that his writing style is consistently engaging, this book resonated even more with me than usual. The book is told through the viewpoints of 4 different characters that interact throughout. I feel that his ability to tell a powerful story from the viewpoints of several different people is one of his greatest strengths. Here we follow two princesses (sisters) a demi-god named Lightsong and a mysterious character named Vasher. One of the things that I love about this book is that even though we're introduced to a whole new world and magic system I feel like he doesn't waste any time with world creation. What I mean by that is that from the get-go it (the book) grabs at you and you never feel (at least I never did) that the story has stalled as more details about his new world are explained. Rather, you learn as you go.It's full of twists and surprises, the characters you think you'll love/hate often aren't those that you would expect. I hate spoilers in reviews, so I don't feel that I can say anymoreEven though it is connected to most of the other books he's written (e.g., it's part of the Cosmere Universe) as a stand-alone book it is a quick read that can be picked up without any prior knowledge of any characters from the Mistborn books or Stormlight Archives. If you're interested in reading a Brandon Sanderson book without making a big reading/time commitment, this is probably the one that you should start with.I love this book and highly recommend it to others. However, books are tricky, and I recognize that not everyone is going to like the same books and things that I do. So, of course I can't guarantee that others will love it, but I can promise that if you read it you will at least see how a master storyteller weaves his tale together.

I have Sandersonitis – Symptoms include bleary eyes from reading too long or staying up too late, knocking yourself in the head for missing the clues and being blindsided, pain in your arm from holding your book or kindle for hours on end, excessive potty breaks at work to sneak a chapter in, tears randomly falling down you face for character deaths, swearing at family and friends with words like Colors, Stormfather, Harmony’s Arms or Lord Ruler, laughing out loud randomly at clever side character banter and randomly trying to use magic from these books because I’m sure the physical laws of this world might change at any moment and I’m sure I could easily be an Awakener, Allomancer or Shardbearer once they do.This is my 8th Brandon Sanderson book and while I’ve read eight books by other authors you always know their pattern or formula for the books and they get a bit repetitive. That is so not true with Brandon Sanderson. The only formula he follows is how to be awesome.Just when I think I know who the bad guy will be or what he is planning because I’ve read his other books I find that I was completely wrong and he broke that mold after he used it and will never use it again.Warbreaker is a world where the magic exists from the life force or breaths of people and colors. The more breathes you carry the more magic you can do and the more attuned your senses are. This is a world where some men and women have returned from the dead and they live off those breathes or breathes can be used to reanimate inanimate objects and dead things. It is an unusual and unique magic system and once again Sanderson was able to create a fantastic world around it.There was a great war over 300 years ago and that is when a Returned took over the region in a great war. Only a few of the areas kept their sovereignty and Idris was one of them. That is where the original royal family retreated to. Now after many years Idris is supposed to send a princess to the returned God King in an attempt to blend the royal lines and produce an heir with royal blood. Once that task is complete the princess will most likely be killed. No matter what it seems like a war between Idris and Hallandren is imminent.Like all of Sanderson works the world is creatively made with a magic system, religions, political machinations and so many rich characters and cultures that it is impossible not to fall in love with the world and he creates. I always enjoy the way that he intertwines the religions and the cultures. Sanderson is able to give an unbiased view for all by using PoVs on all side of them and giving unique insights into the belief system of each. It just shows that perception is everything and right and wrong really seems different depending on where you are standing.-- “That's why we get annoyed by you Idrians. So high, so certain that what you do is right. If your god asked you to give up your Breath—or even the Breath of your child—wouldn't you do it? You give up your children to become monks, forcing them into a life of servitude, don't you? That's seen as a sign of faith. Yet when we do something to serve our gods, you twist your lips at us and call us blasphemers.”The Characters: I always praise Sanderson books for all of the rich characters. He has some of the best supporting characters of any author I’ve ever read.Lightsong a Returned in the God Court was one of my favorite characters in the book. He gets to be the funny character that is a God in a religion he doesn’t believe in. The other Gods are all playing at politic around him but his only ambition in life currently is to be as useless as possible. However for as useless and redundant as he tries to be it seems that he will be caught up in whatever is happening one way or another. All of his conversations are so much fun I laughed at nearly all of them.“Regardless, you ask why I did not greet you. Well, let us assume that I had acted as you suggest Ishould. Upon your approach, you would have had me gush over you?”“Naturally.”“You would have me point out how stunning you appear in that gown?”“I wouldn’t complain.”“Mention how your dazzling eyes glisten in the fireworks like burning embers?”“That would be nice.”“Expound on how your lips are so perfectly red that they could leave any man breathless with wonder, yet drive him compose the most brilliant of poetry each time he recalled the moment?”“I’d be flattered for certain.”“And you claim you want these reactions from me?”“I do.”“Well blast it, woman,” Lightsong said, picking up his cup. “If I’m stunned, dazzled, and breathless, then how the hell am I supposed to greet you? By definition, won’t I be struck dumb?”She laughed. “Well, then, you’ve obviously found your tongue now.”“Surprisingly, it was in my mouth,” he said. “I always forget to check there.”There is also the rebellious princess Siri that has been sent by her father to marry the God King and is surprised by what she finds at the palace. Her sister Vivenna who is convinced she must save Siri from a terrible fate who is trying to stir up trouble in the city with the help of a band of mercenaries. And Vasher who has a mysterious sentient sword that speaks inside your head.Vasher was one of the more interesting characters. He was an enigma for most of the book and I will say that sword is creepy and wonderful all at the same time (view spoiler) I grew to like his semi grumpy ways. He has been around for a while and has a past to make up for.“It was strange, how easily and quickly protection could cause destruction. Sometimes, Vasher wondered if the two weren't really the same thing. Protect a flower, destroy pests who wanted to feed on it. Protect a building, destroy the plants that could have grown in the soil. Protect a man. Live with the destruction he creates.”The resolution wasn’t quite as great as some of his other books, still it all filters out in the end and that last 20% like always is a doozy. If you like fantasy at all and haven’t read a Brandon Sanderson book by now I highly recommend anything written by him. Grab a friend and join in, Sandersonitis is catching and you could be lucky and catch it too.

Oh. My. God. Brandon Sanderson is a genius! This book was so amazing! I listened to the audiobook and I’ve never listened to one before, and this was a great introduction. I loved the plot and the magic system was extremely interesting. The characters developed and changed as the book went on, and if I had to choose a favorite character I don’t think I could do it because I love them all so much in different ways! I actually laughed out loud at parts of the audiobook because the dialogue between some characters was so witty and it was just…I really have no words that can describe how I feel about this book right now!The ending was fantastic and Brandon Sanderson better get working on that second book because I need it in my life now. He is quickly becoming my favorite author, and I’ve ordered more of his books because his writing and the worlds he creates are absolutely fantastic.DEFINITELY recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy or political scheming!

This is not a 600+ page book. 20% of the book is annotations on each chapter, essentially the author patting himself on the back for clever choices. While this may be interesting for a student of writing, it fails to compensate for the anti-climatic nature or simplistic consistency of this book. Pass by and grab a Bujold novel or Robin Hobb, or the Expanse series by GRRM’s personal assistant, or pick up Rothfuss or Phillip Charles Stephens or Altered Carbon. There’s better to be found.

Thermodynamics is by no means an easy subject to understand, with all its abstractness and subtleties. The proper textbooks out there on the subject all leave a lot to be desired in terms of making the subject easy to understand. Atkins attempts to remedy these problems with this small book, and I think he succeeds to some extent. Without using a lot of math and graphs, Atkins introduces the four laws of classical thermodynamics, from both a "normal" (continuum?) perspective and a molecular perspective. The text is organized very logically. The examples given certainly illustrate the point, but aren't expressed in the context of everyday occurrences enough such that a non-scientific reader could easily follow along. The tone of writing is very pleasant and not at all dry, so that while not a gripping read, you certainly won't dread turning the pages.I do think that this book lacks a well-defined audience; some points are practically spoon-fed to you, while others assume you've taken a university-level course on thermo before. Those of us that use thermodynamics (physics, engineering, chemistry, etc., and all of the sub-disciplines within) each approach the subject matter a little differently, so I appreciate that a truly general approach to thermodynamics is not a trivial undertaking. However, I think that the text would be better if more focused for either those with or those without some university experience. Regardless of the minor short-comings, I heartily recommend this book as a refresher on the laws of thermodynamics, or as a companion to a course on thermodynamics, regardless of your discipline.

Let me quote Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington here:"The law that entropy always increase..(lots about it in Atkins book)..-the second law of thermodynamics - HOLDS, I think, the supreme position among the Laws of Nature. If someone points out to you that your pet theory of the universe is in disagreement with Maxwell's equations - then so much the worse for Maxwell's equations. If it is found to be contradicted by observers - well, these experimentalists do bungle things sometimes. But if your theory is found to be against the second law of thermodynamics, I can give you no hope; there is nothing for it but to collapse in deepest humiliation".Professor Atkins delivers short but kaleidoscopic and effective lecture just about above mentioned conviction. Lecture will be useful for many - students as well as for readers who left school long time ago (this is me) but like to get into popular cosmology/physics books with clear understanding of the most important topic in science - thermodynamics. It is worth to mention briefly here, that the original formulation of the second law is not the ultimate truth. This book teaches only about classical thermodynamics, where actually systems are in equilibrium (nothing changes). Professor Atkins admits it in Conclusion at the end. But there is also non-equilibrium, linear thermodynamics that applies to things moving towards equilibrium (dissipative processes like thermodiffusion) and the fourth thermodynamics law (called "reciprocal relations") as a corollary of it. John Gribbin sheds some light on it in his fascinating and highly recommended popular-science new book : "Deep Simplicity - Bringing Order to Chaos and Complexity".

I taught Chemical Thermodynamics, and recommended this book to my students. The basic ideas of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics are so very different from most other areas of physics, such as mechanics, relativity, or quantum mechanics that people fail to appreciate the beauty, power, and importance of this subject. When we study a subject, we must understand the basic principles of the subject. This idea is stressed in Teaching and Helping Students Think and Do Better: Things to Help Students Think and To Do Better in School and In Life and Rational Thinking, Government Policies, Science, and Living. Rational thinking starts with clearly stated principles, continues with logical deductions, and then examines empirical evidence to possibly modify the principles. Atkin's book discusses the strange principles of thermodynamics. The book is thin, but thought provoking and worthwhile.

I am a physical chemist, and thought I knew all about the laws of thermodynamics. But this volume actually gave me new insights into how everything in the world hangs together. Moreover, I gave it to a smart but non-scientist friend, and he was able to understand the principles of this very profound science. Also, his daughter, after discussing it with me, devised a heat transfer experiment for her school's science fair and got first prize.

and Atkins delivers on every level. He explains everything clearly and succinctly. Believe me, if you carefully read every word he has written you will walk away with a deep understanding of what temperature, enthalpy, entropy and absolute zero actually mean.

Great book that explains the laws of thermodynamics with a historical context. Some parts are not easy to understand and, depending on the background of the reader, may require that the reader look up related material to gain a clear understanding. Overall, however, I found the book very insightful and helpful towards understanding thermodynamics.

As advertised

i read this book cover to cover about once a year, it's worth the read.
