I found this book thru another author, glad I did! Now I've found a new author to follow! This was a fast paced, serial killer, medical story. Loved the characters, will be reading more of Patrick Logan!.

This was my first book by Patrick, but it won't be my last. I want to read the books about Drake and more about Bennett and Screech.

I enjoy this author...Please get back to writing more of Chase Adams and Damien Drake...Great characters all around...

Love this character !

I love Patrick Logan!! One of my new favorite authors! His Damien Drake and Chase Adams series are some of the best books in the genre. In those books, the reader is introduced to Dr. Beckett Campbell, chief medical examiner with the NYC Medical Examiners Office. Dr. Campbell is not your run-of-the mill doctor. Beckett has a dark side, very dark, and he just can not tolerate when people get away with the murder of innocents. So, he rectifies the situation. In Bitter End, the reader finally discovers what actually what happened in Virgin Gorda, an island alluded to in the Drake series. A very scary story that deals with human trafficking. And this theme will be carried over to the next Damien Drake book, Human Trafficking. What is so truly amazing about all the books in these series is how the author weaves the characters through each and you get to know them and their stories. Great book, great read and great characters. You keep writing them and I will keep reading them!

If you read "American Guardian" magazine, you've probably read most of this book already, since Waters wrote the "Because I Was Armed" column, which consisted of condensed forms of the stories in this book. The stories are fleshed out a little for the book, but most of the new material is just padding.The stories are fascinating in themselves, but Waters pushes his hyperbole a little too far. An example from the chapter titled "High Noon": "The flashing lights from the police car stained the [white Jeep] Cherokee a bloody red." This in the middle of a sunny day, mind you. He also makes you think twice about whether he really knows his subject when he writes statements like "Turrisi picked up the pistol [a .45-caliber Model 1911], chambered a shell...." (A "shell"? A shotgun uses shells; a pistol uses "rounds" or "cartridges.") And again: "...Turrisi unlatched the safety on his .45." (Granted, "unlatched" might be technically correct, but it still makes me cringe; I "unlatch" a gate, I "disengage" a safety).While I'll continue to look to Massad Ayoob for more in-depth analysis, Waters has written a decent first book. It's a good, quick read.

Similar to Massad Ayoob's classic text, The Ayoob Files: The Book, this book covers over a dozen real incidents. The author focuses more on the mental and emotional impacts of the crime on the victim's life whereas as Ayoob covers the legal and tactical aspects of attacks. Ordinarily, reading account after account would become tedious but the author skillfully keeps the action moving. He also includes brief commentary on concealed carry of firearms and the failures of the justice system. The greatest value to the reader comes from considering how the incidents described in the book would play out in the reader's life. Is your home safe from unwanted entry? How would you respond to a car jacking? Is your place of business a desirable target for criminals? If so, how might you react? How would you protect your loved ones? If you are attacked, you have little or no time to do something very important very quickly. This book provides you courses of action by seeing crimes through the experiences of others. It rates a place in the library of anyone wanting to preserve their life and lives of those they care about.

This is a thoroughly generous and well-balanced introduction to the writings and thought of Rene Girard. His mimetic theory has immense explanatory power radically reaching into and connecting seemingly disparate disciplines and thought-worlds. His more anthropological approach to the Judeo-Christian narrative, climaxing in the Gospel of Jesus, provides an incredible perspective that surely makes for a healthy corrective both to dangerously abstract and dehistoricized theological interpretations of the atonement (that could at the very least subconsciously lead to the endorsement and use of brutal violence), and also to the popular “post-Christian” attempt to pit the concern for victims against the idea of an almost inherently oppressive Christianity (which is itself the intellectual and spiritual revolution that first gave voice to the scapegoated victim in the first place). Between this Reader and the 5 part CBC interview with Rene Girard (do listen to that as well on YouTube), I am captivated by the brilliance of this man, and have been drawn both Girard’s other books and also those works of his influences and conversation partners.

While Rene Girard is less well known in the United States, in Europe, and I speak particularly of France and Germany, he is considered one of the great thinkers of modern times, on a par--insofar as his influence and his innovative thought is concerned--with Freud and Marx, and he is a far more noteworthy thinker for us at this historical moment than either of those two men, whatever their reputation. Girard's work is as accessible as it is startling in its clarity, fundamental simplicity, and authenticity. Reading Girard draws us into one prolonged "Aha!" moment where we ask ourselves over and over how something so clear and so simple could have escaped our notice. René Girard is--or rather was--a practicing Christian, but he had the most tolerant, open-minded respect and interest in the values of others. Moreover, his theories are not contingent upon any acceptance of Christian dogma. He was a thinker of great stature and we should all mourn his passing.

This book is a great addition to my Girard library in French. I wanted to be able to share my keen interest for his inspiring work and ideas with all my American friends and family. This is the perfect entry point for readers who are prepared to make the effort: this is not casual reading. But the reward in a critical look on many tough issues of our personal and societal lives is well worth it.

For me this is a key reference book as I don't have the time or energy to read all the writings of this great philosopher. His theories on the development of culture, especially, religion, are remarkable. The Girard Reader clearly shows his memetic theory, how he developed it, and its importance. For Christians he shows the meaning and impact of Jesus.

Girard has deepest intellectual argument for the Transformative power of the Gospel. Silicon Valley's Peter Theil is a former student and supporter of Girard's thought

Reading Girard's theory on mimetic contagion and scapegoating and its application to the Old and New Testament is a revelation. Girard sees the revelation of God in the Old and New Testament as not just another myth but rather the process by which God unfolds what has been going on in Human Culture since time began. For Girard, all human cultures are founded on a scapegoat who has been ritually murdered. Myth tells the foundational murder from the perspective of the vitimisers. Girard discovered that, by contrast, the Judeo-Christian scriptures do the opposite: they side with the victim. The selections of writings in the Reader (extracts from various books and interviews) explain the evolution of his thought. Note that some of the earlier chapters on the evidence for triangular desire and mimesis in literature are hard going, particularly if you are not faimiliar with the authors being analysed. But, it is worth perservering. And, if the book grabs your attention, there is now a whole industry of Giradian writings to feast on.

Good story

This book was something that stirred alot of things inside of me. I was so awestruck, that I did what I have never done with any other author and that was write a letter. The best way to tell my review is to share part of the letter so here goes. Soul searchind is something most of us do at one time or another. Looking for the meaning of life, why we are here? Etc, etc. Sometimes we indulge in our sorrow so much that we forget to see that life is beautiful. So beautiful like our first love, our only love or the love of our lives. How familiar I find the feelings you describe of trying to be cool and the best of friends with your dad. Remembering your mother and the softness, tranquility and peace of mind you can only find in a mother's arms. The elated feeling you had when Trina was your girlfriend Your sense of being a true gentleman, treating her like your secret treasure. The flood that washed over you when she was lost to another man. Damn!!! That tore open an old wound. The author made me feel his pain, his joy to a lesser degree because nothing can compare to living the actual events. The memoir translated into Spanish in no way lost its power whats more there are certain things that can double the impact spoken in the tongue of Cervantes.
