John E. McMurry received his B.A. from Harvard University and his Ph.D. at Columbia University. Dr. McMurry is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Foundation Fellow. He has received several awards, which include the National Institutes of Health Career Development Award, the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award, and the Max Planck Research Award. In addition to The Organic Chemistry of Biological Pathways, he is also the author of Organic Chemistry, Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry, and Chemistry (with Robert Fay). Tadhg P. Begley received his B.Sc. from National University of Ireland and his Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Begley is the recipient of many awards, including the Merck Faculty Development Award and the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award. His research group uses the principles and techniques of organic chemistry to study complex organic transformations found in vitamin biosynthetic pathways. When I opened the book for the first time, my immediate reaction was "Wow, there's not much text, is there?" The page is fairly small to begin with, the font is fairly large, the line spacing and margins are generous, and there are a lot of figures. I realized after a while that this wasn't an especially fair criticism, though. Because the purpose of the text is primarily to show mechanisms of important metabolic reactions, most of the information can be conveyed through chemical structures. In fact, a significant chunk of the text is devoted to saying (paraphrased), "well, it's extremely difficult to determine exact mechanisms, so the precise path that this reaction follows is uncertain. The figure shows the most commonly proposed mechanism, but another possibility is that..." The alternative is most often explained in words but sometimes gets its own figure.The book is very descriptive, offering mostly "what" and "how" rather than "why." Arguably, there's nothing inherently wrong with that, especially because the preface essentially says directly that that's the purpose of the book. But it does mean that the book is quite limited, and isn't very useful on its own. You would need a fully fleshed-out course to extract much value from it, and unfortunately, I know from firsthand experience that a well-designed course is far from a given. Our lectures and exams basically just asked us to regurgitate the mechanisms from the text, which was not useful or enjoyable. That seems to be the danger: a lazy lecturer told to use this textbook to teach a course will produce a worthless class from which the students will take away almost nothing of lasting value.All that aside, there are still some quibbles with the book. Some of the figures are repetitious, which can be quite confusing. And it doesn't cover some extremely important mechanisms, such as THF-mediated methylation.It's frustrating, honestly - even if you have no problem with the book's purpose as a compilation of reaction mechanisms, you would then expect it to be an excellent reference... and it just isn't. There are too many gaps in what it covers, and too many things that are annoyingly difficult to find among the thicket of chemical structures. It certainly still has its uses, considering that there's really no other textbook with such an authoritative compilation of mechanistic detail on the topics it does cover. But there seems to be room for it to be so much better, and its uses are limited at any rate.

This is a good read for supplementary material if you struggle to connect organic chemistry to biological processes

This is a very easy to read book. If you have already taken organic chemistry it may be a bit of a review but it does apply the information to biological pathways. If you have not already taken organic chemistry, it is a great book to learn it. I think that it is easier, yet just as comprehensive as other textbooks out there, but it skips over things that are more useful in physical organic chemistry (energy equations and things like that). We are using it in our biochemistry class and it's a great review that gets to the point.

I AM A BIG Astronomy buff and I LOVE reading books on Mars, and Mars is one of my 3 favorite planets to looks at through my telescope, books is heavy but has a lot of GREAT pictures. I would definitely recommend this book to any Astronomy lover.

One of the men who worked on this project showed it to a group of friends. I bought it for my teenage grandson who may visit Mars one day.The photography is incredible and serves to build one's dreams!

Got this for my 78 year old Dad for Father's Day, on the outside chance he'd find it interesting. He's not especially into space or astronomy, but the pictures are so varied, detailed and surprising that he's read through the whole book twice and had many questions for me. I hadn't seen the book myself, just heard it discussed among space aficionados on Twitter, so when I saw it in person I was shocked at how huge and heavy it is. Very, very nicely done.Very interested readers can look up a host of technical data online for each photo, including 3D images, raw (unfiltered) sensor images, and images of the surrounding area. The authors (and NASA) have outdone themselves. Would love to see a similar book with recent high-res images from the Moon!

At first let me say that in a usual I like to have some meditations early in the morning as it helps me to fix my absolutely free and right vision with everyday working routine. Always I try to find any new types of how to make better my day and life at all, how change my opinion about many things that make me so nervous and how to accept all this in the right way, without harming my nervous system. This book has a very good influence on me, so I get some of the useful information fro here and start to use it in my everyday life , I notice that during this week I became more calm and think before make some things . I like this book, but still need to reread it to get all the needed info in the right way.

These books were very interesting and helped me understand in more detail about chakras and how to put them into practice. The author took a practical approach to explaining this theory allowing me to understand the concept from a personal point of view. Gives some advice on meditation. It also includes a quiz which can help assess your chakras. I recommend this book if you are interested in this subject.

I have meditated years ago and somehow fell out or the habit. I am wanting to encourage my wife to meditate and I wanted to renew my habit. This book is very well done and concise. It can be read very quickly to get a general idea about meditation and how simple it really is. This author keeps it pithy. Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in meditating.

BENJAMIN REID PHILLIPS has been teaching drawing, storyboarding, and sequential art courses at SCAD since 2004. I've read a few books on storyboarding, this is by far the most fun, not only cause it's up to date. But its just fresh and fun to read.some books can be very dry and professional. this book was done in a way thats as fun as reading a comic. used the show not tell set of mind. as in instead of going on some long lengthy paragraph it will just plan show you what they mean. lots of pictures and examples in this book. the book done with a younger audience in mind.I mean just look at who did it. I sure they have years of experience to make the material interesting and I got to say this book pulls it off very well.theres also a lot of great interviews to read and you get to learn from different experiences.this book made me with I was able to go to the school. looking forward to other books by them

I'm currently employed in the industry as a designer for tv animation but wanted to sharpen up my board skills with this book, but its basically useless. It contains the very very basics of boarding ie reminders about continuity and not breaking the 180 rule and things like how to read a script, but all of the sample work they show is clearly by students and has huge problems (clarity, composition, detail level, camera placement, tangents, tone, posing, acting, etc.) that wouldn't fly in a professional environment, its ridiculous to use them as an example to follow. All the accurate information is so basic you can google it. I think this is a course requirement for a class at SCAD so if you gotta buy it you gotta buy it, but if you're learning on your own definitely skip this one.

This is AWESOME. I've been reading and rereading this to get a handle on how to do storyboarding on my own as almost a precursor for creating comics and hopefully short films in the future. I can't wait to use the techniques and advice I've read in this book.

Great reference for storyboarding. I especially enjoyed the discussion of camera shots. I purchased the book vis-a-vis comic creation and the "shot" sections have giving me reason to pause and rethink how panels/frames are designed.

This is a very useful book. It not only covers storyboarding it self, but talks of camera angles, composition and other production. It's just what my students needed to gain some solid background in the video production class. Recommended.

Not very useful when it comes to the actual negotiations process and you reach an impasse. Insurance companies have been processing claims longer than those reading this have been alive and know all the tricks of the trade. Involved in two collisions where I had the opportunity to put the strategies presented in this book to work. On both occasions, the process worked well up until the negotiations. Needless to say, I had to hire attorneys for both collisions and to file civil suits.

I highly recommend this book!I sustained injuries in a car accident. I had no knowledge or experience dealing with insurance claims. I was concerned about dealing with the insurance adjuster, feeling like an amateur competing against a seasoned professional.I bought this book a few weeks after the accident. It was EXTREMELY helpful in understanding the "system" - general background, role of each player, process, typical timeline, examples, suggestions of "good ideas vs bad ideas," etc. This book pointed out a number of traps to avoid and saved me from just going along with what SEEMED like reasonable suggestions from the insurance adjuster. After 3 months, I hired an attorney, realizing from this book that I could not handle the situation on my own.My only regret is that I did not find this book the day after the accident. It would have saved me some sleepless nights.

This book was ok. However, it was so vague that if you have anything other than a minor car accident, this book is not worth it. My wife was involved in a major car accident and we were looking for advice on reaching a fair and honest appraisal of damages for injury. This did not help us value what a good settlement is. So, for anything complex, the book basically is worthless.

I was really glad to get this book shortly after I was in an accident. It gave me a really good picture of a personal injury claim: what it is (and is not), what would be a fair amount to expect for my injuries, and how to communicate with the insurance company. Actually, I wish I'd had it to review BEFORE my first phone conversations with the insurance company, as it gives some good advice for those crucial first conversations.

I was rear-ended in 2010 just 18 days after I purchased a brand new car. This car immediately lost its value and I was injured in the crash. I could have hired an attorney to settle my claim, but I first wanted to see what it might be worth and how the system worked. This book was extremely helpful. I was able to successfully resolve the property damage claim for a reasonable amount and the bodily injury claim as well all without hiring an attorney. The book has a lot of good advice and sample letters to assist in writing claims and what to do to negotiate or further pursue the claim after the first few settlement offers. This book, along with a lot of patience, was very helpful in my settling my own claim. I'm very glad I purchased it.

I have a pending auto accident-injury claim that will close out when the statute of limitation is reached. I want to be as knowledgeable as possible when it's time for me to file the lawsuit. Ordinarily one would think that the insurance companies representing the parties will act in good faith since their insured were found at fault.
