More than just a story about Hamilton, "The Secret Race" weaves in all the significant doping scandals of the past 15 years. Although the publicity surrounding this book is driven by the interest in Lance Armstrong, the book exposes a sport-wide culture where doping was expected and the infrastructure to support it was easily accessible to the best riders.- Second, the level of prosaic detail adds credibility. It's more than just a chronicle of what drugs were taken -- but also detail on how they worked; how they were concealed; how tests were beaten; the logistics of getting to and from the doping doctors; and the strategy of timing blood doping sessions to correspond with key stages of big races. Hamilton even details the bonus schedule he paid to his doping doctors for each major victory. Although I've read previous books on the topic, I was still surprised by the intensity of doping activities outlined here. It's the difference between having the story told by "outsiders" (investigators, journalists, team assistants) vs. "insiders" (someone like Hamilton who is finally willing to tell the story).- Third, Hamilton's own personal story is believable. He helps explain why bike racers decide to dope, why lying about it becomes so central to their day to day lives, and what it takes to turn the corner and start telling the truth. The co-author's key challenge in this book is to make the reader accept the story of someone who lied for so long, and inevitably we have to wonder, "He lied then, is he telling the truth now?" The context provided here allows the reader to make that leap.Two other individuals are worth mentioning. The first is David Walsh, the London Times journalist who wrote, From Lance to Landis: Inside the American Doping Controversy at the Tour de France, which outlined way back in 2007 what was happening inside pro racing during the "Lance Armstrong era." None of the recent doping scandals has been a real surprise to anyone who read Walsh's book. "The Secret Race" has a lot more detail, since it's told by a true insider, but without David Walsh, Paul Kimmage and a few others continuing to tell this story the facts likely would have never come out (One thing that's clear from "The Secret Race" is that the sport's governing body, the UCI, was never going to blow the whistle on itself).[Nov. 2012 update: David Walsh's stories that laid out the original allegations against Lance Armstrong have just been released in a Kindle edition, Lanced: The shaming of Lance Armstrong, and coming soon is his new e-book, Seven Deadly Sins ]The second person to mention is Andy Hampsten, another American cycling hero whose 1988 ride in the Tour of Italy is still legendary. Hampsten was competing at the top level of international cycling before the EPO era but then found himself out-muscled by back-of-the-pack competitors who suddenly transformed themselves, turbocharged by EPO and blood transfusions. For anyone who thinks that it's OK to excuse continuing coverups because "it was a level playing field; they all doped," it's worth reading Andy Hampsten's quotes:"In the mid eighties, when I came up, riders were doping but it was still possible to compete with them...bottom line, a clean rider could compete in the big three-week races. EPO changed everything...all of a sudden whole teams were ragingly fast, all of a sudden I was struggling to make time limits. By 1994, I'd be on climbs, working as hard as I've ever worked, producing exactly the same power, at the same weight, and right alongside me would be these big-assed guys, and they'd be chatting like were were on the flats! It was completely crazy. As the 1996 season went by...everybody knew what was up, everybody was talking about EPO, everybody could see the writing on the wall."Hampsten retired from pro bike racing at that time. Other racers made a different decision, and signed up for in-depth doping regimes; their story is told here. To believe that anyone raced clean and then won the Tour de France 7 times in a row at the height of the doping era seems to defy reality. To use a term repeated often in "The Secret Race," it would have to be "extraterrestrial."

Normally I don't write these reviews, but this was such a compelling read in light of the events that have been unfolding. Tyler Hamilton, who I admired for his ability to push through pain. Tyler Hamilton, who I lost every ounce of respect for after he lied about doping and then admitted to it. Tyler Hamilton, who I started to see not as an athlete who cheated, but as a human being who I eventually began to understand and sympathize, and a newfound sympathy for his plight and struggle. Here is a man who I no longer see as a "bad person", but someone who came to a series of life changing decisions and forks in the path, and were I to be put in his shoes, I would probably have done exactly the same things. Looking back at the many years of cycling, I realized I blindly refused to believe that the greatest hero in sports would ever guilty of a crime, and that the world was simply trying to bring him down for his successes, and I, like many others, grouped the LeMonde, Le Mondes, Ballasters, and the Andreaus as bitter people trying to destroy a great champion. This book reveals so much detail to a point where you kick yourself for being so oblivious and ignorant of the existence of such a massive, organized underworld. This book will be a game changer.

Fabulous book. I read it in just over one day. Smooth and easy read with a ton of information and an abundance of inspiration.Tyler Hamilton was a professional cyclist, who rode side by side with Lance Armstrong until he became Armstrong's opponent (I'll let you guess why that happened). This book is full of incredible truths about Hamilton's doping and his struggles with the shame and dishonesty it came with. In most of the book Tyler points the finger at his own mistakes and wrong doings, which was both frustrating and touching. Yes, there is plenty of finger pointing at Lance, too, and it's not pretty (it definitely confirmed my feelings about Armstrong's character). One might think Tyler is calling out Armstrong in a vindictive way, but that's not the case at all, (plus there are so many testimonials from other riders that confirm Tyler's claims).This book has guts and fire, it's real and deeply honest. I learned a lot about the science of doping and, while I don't agree with it at all, I now understand the why of it all. The truth is sad, indeed. I look at all sports differently now, that's for certain.I admire Tyler for his honesty, which came at a huge cost. HUGE! But the inspiration this book holds, the insight to honesty and how it literally does set you free, is remarkable. It's easy to tell the truth when you don't have much to lose, but it's much harder to tell the truth when you have everything to lose. In the end it may have cost Tyler his career and an Olympic gold medal, but it gave him the important things that hold greater value. Very few books bring me to tears, but this one did, many times.There are many wonderful quotes in the book that stayed with me but this one stands out...."I know that old saying that when God closes a door He opens a window. I think that saying is really talking about the resilience of truth. I’ve come to learn that truth is a living thing. It has a force inside it, an inner springiness. The truth can’t be denied or locked away, because when that happens, the pressure builds. When a door gets closed, the truth seeks a window, and blows the glass clean out. "I highly recommend this book.....it will open your eyes to the truth about athletes who dope and why. But most of all, it will touch your heart.

Overall I thought this book did a really good job highlighting some of the differences in how Japanese people think compared to Americans. This could be useful in knowing why some things take so long to progress or why certain results occur when dealing with Japanese companies. I am currently living and working in Japan and was quite aware of some of these things already. However, there were some things in the book that helped shed some light on some things for me so I found it helpful.That being said, I think there are some things and wordings that generalize a bit too much and make some things that rarely happen seem like everyday things. I would say to just be aware that one size doesn't fit all and that these are generalizations. I understand that these kinds of things are necessary when writing this kind of book so I don't fault the author for that very much. Just a caution to the reader.

There's no excuse for being an "ugly American" in Japan -- just read this well-written, sensible book and you won't make any faux pas. It has insights into social situations and business behavior, and offers historical context for the rules of engagement when you're in Japan. This second edition of the book is updated with tips for handling emails and social media.

I'm aware going into this book that it is considered a bit "dated" even though it's twenty first century. That said, I still think it gives a knowledgeable scope of Japanese Business Culture. The Foreword and Introduction are length and well-backed by academics.The book itself was in excellent condition and arrived on time. Very happy.

So far, I can relate with my experience.

This book is a great primer for any US Americans doing or wanting to do business in Japan. It lays a solid foundation for understanding the "why" of business and cultural behavior and customs.

About the Author

Viktor E. Frankl is Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of Vienna Medical School and Distinguished Professor of Logotherapy at the U.S. International University. He is the founder of what has come to be called the Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy (after Freud's psychoanalysis and Adler's individual psychology) -- the school of logotherapy. Born in 1905, Dr. Frankl received the degrees of Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Vienna. During World War II he spent three years at Auschwitz, Dachau and other concentration camps. Dr. Frankl first published in 1924 in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and has since published twenty-six books, which have been translated into nineteen languages, including Japanese and Chinese. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard, Duquesne and Southern Methodist Universities. Honorary Degrees have been conferred upon him by Loyola University in Chicago, Edgecliff College, Rockford College and Mount Mary College, as well as by universities in Brazil and Venezuela. He has been a guest lecturer at universities throughout the world and has made fifty-one lecture tours throughout the United States alone. He is President of the Austrian Medical Society of Psychotherapy.

They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms--to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way."

I read this in college and ordered again to read some 40 years later. Frankl relates the severe conditions in the concentration camp. Those without any purpose seemed to perish. Those that had developed purpose and meaning to the harsh conditions got out of bed every morning to face another unbearable day. this book is a classic. anything less than 5 stars would be a reflection on me.

When I first started reading Man's Search.... last week I was repulsed by the descriptions of the concentration camp experiences. How could humans be like that? Even though of course we have known about them for 70 years now, it is horrible to read about them. My temptation was to put the book aside, I told someone it was "depressing." But how glad I am that I persevered (because it was our Book Club choice this month.) Ultimately, this book is a hopeful paen to humankind's ability to rise above all suffering, to find our own individual meaning to our existence and in that way make sense of why we are in the world and why we should continue in it, doing our very best. This book transcends religion even as I recognize so much of what Frankl writes in my own religious beliefs.Truly a must read for people as soon as they are old enough to understand it--perhaps mid teenage years.

Viktor Frankl, an Austrian Jew, studied neurology and psychiatry with a focus on depression and suicide years before being arrested and deported by the Nazis in 1942. He defied odds by lasting three years in concentration camps. He lost his parents, brother, and his wife, who was pregnant. As doctors were in short supply in the camps, Frankl, after working as a slave laborer for some time, was able to work as a physician until his liberation.As his work prior to his time in the concentration camps had focused on depression and the prevention of suicide, he turned his focus to his own survival story and the people with whom he interacted in the camps. Why did some survive and others perish? What gave people the will to live? What gives life meaning?Some favorite moments:•Life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, as Freud believed, or a quest for power, as Alfred Adler taught, but a quest for meaning.•Frankl saw three possible sources for meaning: in work (doing something significant), in love (caring for another person) and in courage during difficult times. Suffering in and of itself is meaningless; we give our suffering meaning by the way in which we respond to it.•Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, you freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation. You cannot control what happens to you in life, but you can always control what you will feel and do about what happens to you.•The truth- that love is the ultimate and the highest goal to which man can aspire. Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and believe have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love.•Love goes very far beyond the physical person of the beloved. It finds its deepest meaning in his spiritual being, his inner self. Whether or not he is actually present, whether or not he is still alive at all, ceases somehow to be of importance.•From all this we may learn that there are two races of men in this world, but only these two - the "race" of the decent man and the "race" of the indecent man. Both are found everywhere; they penetrate into all groups of society. No group consists entirely of decent or indecent people. In this sense, no group is of "pure race" - and therefore one occasionally found a decent fellow among the camp guards.•Now, being free, they thought they could use their freedom licentiously and ruthlessly. The only thing that had changed for them was the they were now the oppressors instead of the oppressed...Only slowly could these men be guided back to the commonplace truth that no one has the right to do wrong, not even if wrong has been done to them.•"Live as if you were living already for the second time and as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you are about to act now."•So, let us be alert - alert in a twofold sense: Since Auschwitz we know what man is capable of. And since Hiroshima we know what is at stake.Highly recommend.

For some reason, I put off reading this book for many years. I had read excerpts that made me want to read it, but getting the book and sitting down to read it just seemed to not fit into my plans. I am so glad I finally read it. For about twenty years, I read many stories about World War Two. I wanted to know why no one helped the Jews. In "Sick Building Syndrome and the Problem of Uncertainty: Environmental Politics", Michelle Murphy “highlights the versatile and volatile work of gender in twentieth-century practices of rendering environmental health hazards perceptible and knowable. In the 1980s, gender and chemical exposures both generated controversy and uncertainty” (pg. 6). She argues that indoor chemical exposures “came into being through multiple histories that did not all agree on the terms by which an exposure could be shown to have happened or not” (pg. 8). Finally, Murphy “suggests regimes of perceptibility actively participated in making chemical exposures the phenomena they are today. In order to throw imperceptibility into relief through juxtaposition, this book makes a second argument about the historical ontology of exposure: objects are many things at once” (pg. 10). In this manner, Murphy’s work uses Sick Building Syndrome to examine the intersections of race, gender, class, and science.Of class, Murphy writes, “Sick building syndrome was a problem only possibly in conditions of relative privilege and luxury that characterized Reagan-era America. It captured those minor health complaints only foregrounded when larger dangers receded. It expressed an expectation of comfort and safety as conditions of daily life for the beneficiaries of the privileges of race and class” (pg. 3). Race played a critical role in defining class, as Murphy writes, “Historians of science have tended to take up questions of race only when examining acts of racism or when ‘race’ has been the subject of science. Much less attention has been paid to the inverse subject of racialized disadvantage – the work of racialized privilege” (pg. 112). Class and gender intersected, as “the middle-class gendering of office work that was built into its very walls was fundamental to the covering over of class stratifications that were built into its very machines” (pg. 56).Murphy writes of gender, “During the 1970s, a resurgent feminism and a newly articulated environmentalism spawned an office-workers movement that made occupational health, and particularly chemical exposures, one of its concerns” (pg. 3). Office buildings were uniquely situated to play host to clashes between older gender ideologies and the consciousness-raising of feminists. Murphy writes, “Office buildings were not just luxurious spaces for the American managerial class: they were also constructed to promote the efficient labor of the droves of mostly women in the office’s lower ranks. Perceptions about the physiological needs of these laborers were built into the very pipes and ducts of office buildings” (pg. 19). The bounds of comfort were primarily dictated by men, as “optimum climate was charted through measurements largely taken from the bodies of young, white college men” (pg. 25). When officials examined Sick Building Syndrome complaints, they reflected the gendered assumptions of their time and of corporate culture. Murphy writes, “Investigators at NIOSH [the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health] found themselves turning to psychosomatic explanations, such as mass hysteria and mass psychogenic illness (MPI), to make sense of the variety and nonspecificity of women office workers’ complaints. Perhaps, some investigators suggested, such symptoms were a gendered psychological response to life stresses” (pg. 71). NIOSH opinions were divided into two camps. Murphy writes, “One arguing that indoor pollution existed in chronic and non-specific forms and that sick building syndrome was a legitimate phenomenon, the other holding that sick building syndrome was a misnomer for what was better understood as a gendered psychological delusion” (pg. 83).Ironically, the tobacco industry brought Sick Building Syndrome to the forefront as its nonspecific cause aided their effort to combat efforts to regulate secondhand smoke and “promote an ecological and systems approach to indoor pollution” (pg. 132). For them, “The appeal of sick building syndrome was that pollution and its effects could be materialized in a way impossible to regulate – as an unpredictable multiplicity” (pg. 148). In this manner, Murphy argues, “The terms by which sick building syndrome was granted existence…were the result of a contested ontological politics” (pg. 149).

This is at least my 3rd Flame Tree calendar and am not disappointed. The cover is NOT flocked with glitter but it does have a shiny gold detailing in some of the lines within the art on the cover; which is beautiful. But it is only on the cover... Kind of wish they had done the same to the art within the calendar.

This calendar had one good print - the cover! Once you turn it to use the calendar you will not see it again. The monthly prints are cheaply done. You cannot hang the calendar and still see the lady in gold . Worthless !!

I bought this as a birthday gift for a young woman--I wanted something considerate but not too expensive so that it wouldn't be taken the wrong way. She had told me Klimt is her favorite artist. She loved the calendar, and it turned out to be just the right sort of gift, thoughtful but not inappropriately expensive. :-)

Arrived in perfect condition, no bent edges or anything. The front is accented with gold and each of the months are a beautiful HD print. The material is well weighted and not flimsy. Great as a gift or for yourself!

The horses are beautiful! I am especially fond of the Arabians. The horses without the ornate patterns are so pretty they don't need extra color enhancements. Thank you, Cindy for another great book.

1/4 or more of the images are shadowed and you cannot really color.Ordered from Prime on the December 21. I did not receive until January 8th. First set was never sent and had to wait for second set. Ridiculous. But I was patient due to this will help fill my time after I have back surgery.Therefore, I am kind of disappointed in this item.

Love this! The art work inside is so detailed and delicate. It's the perfect size journal to use as a diary or to write daily thoughts. I purchased this for my 14 year old daughter. She loves horses and books! She likes to write stories and this is the perfect blending of both worlds for her! The quality is really nice.. I was very happy with this purchase.

If you like journal writing and love horses this is a wonderful item. Very pretty cover and decent quality paper. Very reasonable priced but I did get it for half price. Every page had a picture that can be colored. Would make a great gift .

A real Winner from Cindy. Immediately bought another for friend. Many familiar illustrations included in this wonderful journal.I did not know when I ordered if the pictures were already colored in print but you get to color them yourself which is fabulous. I have most of Cindy's books and this is a big favorite among them all. Buy more than one, make great gifts!

This is nothing short of perfect from Cindy Elsharoni. The cover is beautiful and the pages are the same texture as the coloring books. I don't know what I'm going to write but I may enjoy the clean pages for awhile. The drawings are enchanting on the corners, giving me another opportunity to color them. The is a,great journal. I love it!

Absolutely Love all Cindy Elsharouni amazing coloring books! The artwork in this journal is beautiful. You can choose to add some color or it or simply leave the artwork in black and gray. Either way that you your still going to have a beautiful journal! I would highly recommend to anyone who loves to journal and/or color!
