A brave, respectful and admirable gem of information and insight - this book evoked many a "wow" moment. It also validated suspicions I'd had for years. As a licensed clinician, I'm better informed now to meet my clients' needs. Dr. Harris provides a well written, reasonable, and well substantiated argument on behalf of saving normal and the psychiatric profession. He underscores the mercenary evil monstrosity of big pharma, enlightens us on the history of stigma against the mentally ill, and much more. I appreciate his ability to, time and again, claim culpability for his small part in psychiatry's failings. I'm doubtful he takes due credit for his contributions.My one negative critique is that Dr. Harris makes some absolute statements. He embarks on an extensive, somewhat dramatic argument about the day care sex scandals that sprung up in the 1980s. The author equates this epoch with the Salem witch trials. No comparison. He leaves no room for the possibility that actual abuse of that nature occurred. I worked with children who I have no doubt were victims of that type of abuse. The bulk of his book presents a balanced perspective, so I found his bias off-putting and perplexing. Were he to take a side, I'd have preferred him airing on the side of caution - the side of child welfare. Instead, without a substantial well-reasoned argument, he presumes none of the abuse happened. This could be damaging to child survivors of that type of abuse. As a social worker, I know that abuse in day care centers occurs much more often than society will acknowledge. I also know of the bizarre forms of child abuse, sometimes satanic/unbelievably horrific. Tragically, there aren't limits to the ways in which child abuse occurs. We need to listen to children, not dismiss them completely. Dr. Harris also negates glorified herbal remedies as completely bogus. Yet, herbs have played a core role in medicine since the dawn of time. All told, the positives of reading this book far outweigh the negative. It's a must read for all.
Common sense and psychiatry seem an oxymoron though this book addresses some of the hijinx of a field prostituted to the Insurance companies.I worked in the mental health field for many years and found the labeling of human spirit and soul seachers a task worthy only of those who areresponsible with their "forecasting". Self-fullfiling prophecies can be damaging if not life altering. This author raises questions and creates thought provoking suggestions as to how we might rely less on labeling for the sake of payment, and more on common sense and creative planning for wellness.
A thought provoking read detailing the current problems with over diagnosis and the DSM. The author is as well informed as anyone could be on the subject and from my perspective as a mental health professional I strongly agree with almost all of his major points. With that said this is a quite detailed and in-depth look at the subject and it is probably best suited for those in the mental health field or those that have a keen interest in the DSM. While the information should be widespread and available to the public a summary of this book, or perhaps an article on the topic, would be better for most people.
Excellent overview of what is wrong with the mental health industry. Anyone involved in that field as a worker or patient should read it. The point is that the overdiagnosis of mental illnesses created a society in which too many people have been talked into believing that they are sick and may not understand the implications.
A wonderful book, but much too late. Grace E Jackson, MD (Board Certified Psychiatrist) wrote these warnings and truths in Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs and Drug Induced Dementia: A Perfect Crime in 2005 and 2009..It is reassuring to see Dr Frances speak out.
Excellent overview of the case against the psycho-pathologising of essentially normal human behaviour. Allen Frances writes extremely clearly and simply. This is a powerful and very timely political statement aimed at encouraging us to regain freedoms currently whittled away by an over-zealous psychiatric and psychological establishment hand in glove with Big Pharma.
As a mental health professional, I found Dr. Allen's discussions to be rigorously researched and based on the confluence of science, marketing and reality. It is easy for doctors to over-prescribe in order to find solutions for clients who are suffering and who have been convinced by advertising that medication equals recovery. The author presents the vast considerations that every provider and patient must entertain before launching into a drug regimen. I also appreciate his willingness to assume personal responsibility for the decisions he made over the course of his career that he might reconsider based on additional knowledge and experience.

Read about the past and present fads of mental health disorders, the history and recent changes in the D-5, and the secrets that BIG pharmas keep hidden from the American public and why we the people should be shouting for mental health policy changes and how psychtropic medications are prescribed.
