This story is a prelude to subsequent nuclear disasters. There will always be operators who have bad intentions like in this case or are not intelligent enough to understand the limitations of the machine they operate like in Chernobyl, or irresponsible financial managers who are not willing to spend money to secure emergency cooling pumps like in Fukushima.The damage done in the SLT-1 incident was limited but for Chernobyl and Fukushima to name just a few disasters the damage was huge. No wonder that this technology that relies so heavily on intelligence and integrity of humans is no longer accepted by a lot of countries.The book is well written and especially highlights the heroism of the rescuers.
I was but 8 years old and residing in California. I never heard about this incident until I search Amazon for related books. Boy oh boy, I hit the jackpot. A real page-turner. I do understand the import of the consequential investigation. Hopefully there never will be a repeat incident because the consequences would be too terrible to contemplate.
This is an amazing story of events that tell how a disaster unfolded in Idaho Falls!It is better than other books I have read that cover this topic and I love rereading this when I get into the mood of atomic energy.It's a great read by an intelligent author.
This is a great read. After having worked at the INEL and hearing accounts of what happened, it's good to hear the back story and facts about what really happened. Well, I guess you don't really learn what really happened, just given 3 options for you to decide on your own which is more plausible. There are a couple contradictions in the book, but nothing that really changes the outcome.
This book gives an excellent overview of the first nuclear accident in the United States involving deaths. It clearly presents the facts surrounding the accident, as well as the gruesome outcome for three workers involved with a test reactor during a shutdown for the holidays. It gives information about each of the men, their lives outside of their jobs, and what factors may have led to the explosion of a reactor causing their deaths. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of nuclear power in America, as well as anyone looking to learn more about the consequences of using nuclear power.
This is a true story of the only Americans killed by nuclear power for energy production. The back story of men involved really humanizes this tragic event. I read this book before "We Almost Lost Detroit" to maintain the timeline of the pioneer days of nuclear power. How many lives were changed in less than a second, is quite an understate for this story. Anyone interested in nuclear power should read this book to see what a rough and tumble beginning this industry had.
McKeown writes very gracefully and makes detailed technical events clear to the non-specialist reader. I like his respect for the subject and his not insisting on an overarching answer.
I worked as s DOE subcontractor. I was familiar with INEL at that time. I have never heard of the accident until I read this book.
