I just watched the movie based on this book (with Sandy Dennis). It is one of my favorite movies. Now the movie is not a screenplay of the book. The book basically is a snippet of notes, reports, memos involving the day/weekly/monthly events at a school and the teacher who deals with them. The book shows just how challenging it can to be a teacher in a urban setting. I believe much of what is written in the 1960's is still relevant with today's teachers. Bureaucracy, rules, regulations, and policies galore. Would recommend this book to anyone contemplating becoming a teacher.

I had seen the 1967 movie by the same title starring Sandy Dennis, so I jumped at the chance to read the fictional book on which the movie was based. The book is told through notes and directives and letters and memos between teachers and teachers, students and teachers, administration and teachers, and occasionally teachers and parents. Miss Barrett, fresh out of college, is hired to teach English to a variety of low performing students, and teaches a full schedule in addition to managing a homeroom period. She is totally overwhelmed by the crushing burden of administrative responsibilities, including attendance sheets, hall passes, performance profiles and a cacophony of bells that signal different things at different times. Many of her inner city students are at risk of dropping out, have haphazard home lives, and little parental support, yet she soon learns that most are just crying out for someone to notice them, to care about them. She writes that we "have keys but no locks, blackboards but no chalk, students but no seats, teachers but no time to teach". She balks at the drudgery and the waste and often feels frustrated and defeated. She has such a crushing workload of essays and papers to grade from her 204 students, that she has no personal life at all.In spite of the overwhelming obstacles she does teach some Shakespeare and poetry and essay writing, and she wins over a few of her students, some of whom idolize her. Many remain distant and critical of her, however she maintains her idealism and hope that she can reach even more. All she wants to do is make a difference in Room 304.Although the unconventional structure of the book (told entirely through notes and letters) conveys to a certain extent the chaotic, dysfunctional nature of the school and many of the students and staff, at some point in the book I just wished for some real dialogue and articulate, flowing prose. The notes and memos became a bit tiresome and left too many plot questions unresolved. It was still a very entertaining and enlightening novel, though no doubt some of the same battles are still being fought in the public schools to this day.

I read this book when it first came out in the sixties and enjoyed it tremendously. The characters are true to life, the problems presented are realistic. Working as an educator now, I decided to reread this book and found it to be just as compelling now as it was when first written. The characterizations are still realistic, the students still suffer the same problems, the staffs still try to juggle paperwork, emotional upheavals, raging hormones, and dwindling inventories, broken equipment, and ever changing standards. There is no other profession that is like this, but for all the problems we see everyday, the "AH - HA" moment makes it all worthwhile.

This was published in 1964 but I never read it until this year (2017). What a fantastic book and what an unusual but effective style. It lets you know what being a teacher is like. If I had read it when it came out I probably would have gone into teaching.

This book is old, but it's really funny! The teacher simply goes through her experience as a new (blundering at that) teacher. I liked how she was able to get through to her students having them write notes. My 12 year old read it and laughed at some of the antics of the students (knowing that today, they'd be in a ton of trouble as they should be ).

Somethings change, others don't. Still need good teachers and strong parenting and breakfast. Apparently 7 more words are required and I hate typing without a keyboard.

I've read this book as a teen and fell in love in love with it. I'm 30 now and turned out to be a teacher (as a second profession), though not quite as good as book's main character, Silvia. I do turn to this book for inspiration, especially when m well-planned lesson doesn't work out and when I just fail to instill some simple knowledge into kids' heads. Well, the students might look like they're missing it all out, but you just never know when and how what we teach them will grow. And another thing is - don't expect a thank you :) Even those that are thankful don't realize it or don't come back to thank for whatever reason. The format of the book is awesome, it's almost like a mixed-media book: narrative mixed with students notes, drawings, office notes, conference minutes, etc. It is also unintrusively witty and funny. It's been so many years since the book was written, but so many things just don't change.

Written via memos and notes the story could been written today via email and texts. Funny and heartbreaking. The dates change but I think life in inner city schools are just the same today as the 1960s.

#95,749 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I'm only a couple of chapters in and I've already found the ideas presented to be both insightful and straightforward. Ordinarily the biggest concern I would have with something like this would be addressing the level of difficulty involved in implementing these kinds of concepts. In the past I've bailed early or completely steered clear when these types of books or programs were recommended to me, due to the suggestions feeling far too overwhelming and complicated to even attempt. But so far everything is broken down in a way that feels very doable. I'm looking forward to reading more and testing the waters with my own business projects.

In working for tech companies for over a decade, I've noticed an incredible rush to get projects done quickly... and that all the rushing usually leads to the projects getting done late, or poorly, or both, even when everyone is trying their hardest to win. Risk Up Front helped me understand why things so often go south with these projects... basically helping me see our team blindspots. I loved the authors' approach to accountability, transparency, integrity and commitment in Chapter 4, as it allows project team members to focus on finding productive solutions when challenges arise instead of people feeling bad about their actions/inactions (which tends to slow the project down further). I'm looking forward to working on teams where Risk Up Front's methodology is a part of our day-to-day business culture!

This book couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time for me. I’m confronting a complicated project management challenge where a talented individual and contract sub has invoiced service which I’ve discovered is neither true nor appropriate. I disclosed the issue and in doing so grapple with client’s trust in my judgements.Adam and Brad articulate what really is at hand here. Even if my client would rather not have “wasted time” discussing future hypothetical risk (which we face now in real-life), it’s the service provider’s role to artfully find that communication/commitment path up front, so that it both covers the potentials, and leaves the client having felt they didn’t invest their energy talking about the unnecessary. This book helps to set the foundation to deliver security and rebuilt trust in this project relationship. Thanks guys!

If you're interested in doing new things, and especially doing anything entrepreneurial, this is required reading. Entrepreneurs are naturally optimistic, but the successful ones - despite common wisdom about risk-seeking behavior - hate risk, and focus on it with intensity. Risk Up Front is a method that enables successful risk identification and mitigation without driving entrepreneurs/project managers/teams mad with unnecessary paperwork, processes, etc. Its pragmatic, its designed for use, it works, and the depths and power of the insights make it something greater still. Few investments will pay you back these kinds of multiples.

By redefining the focus of urgency to the front of the project, Risk Up Front changed my perspective on how to build and motivate a team. It's a clear guide to group communication and how to shape common language around transparency and accountability. The authors' focus on identifying potential issues up front is valuable in a wide range of projects. Great book! I will use this.

As a project manager constantly juggling competing priorities, Risk Up Front is a well-written, easily referenced manual on how to mitigate risk early, implement inspiration effectively, and keep profits in-house. RUF is an easy but important read that will benefit almost any project team.

Reading Risk Up Front led me to a sobering admission about how often projects squeak by on too many assumptions and faith. What Josephs and Rubenstein insightfully name optimistic procrastination is precisely the Hail Mary strategy regularly employed as a way things get done. I’m guilty. Throw out the challenge; the team will catch it. Yay, heroes (we hope)! In truth, teams that are constantly scrambling, even if they deliver, can’t play their A game. Risk Up Front (RUF) changes the project approach from post mortem to prenatal culture—from reaction to prevention.I test drove the core principles and the four primary project artifacts on a small solo project while I was reading this. The project documents were simple to create and useful. I was forced to confront difficult challenges (unknowns) I had been “conveniently” putting off. In truth, these unknowns were the source of my frustrations and inefficiencies on the project. Assessing the risks, moving challenges out of my blind spot, and taking committed action to mitigate them was hard. The outcome transformed a building dread into a sense of confidence and relief. The project became easier. My most critical take away from Risk Up Front was the focus on culture change. Even with my test project team of one, there was a significant impact. The most important statement the authors make is in the prologue. “Although [RUF] talks about tools and practices, we apply a laser focus to issues that affect behavior and results.” As a rugby referee, I can assure you that if your directives, penalties, cards and chats with the captains don’t affect behavior and result, everyone is in for a long, miserable game. RUF makes the convincing case that the same is true for projects. Using a RUF approach, the mechanisms to affect behavior and results are embedded in how a team works together. True culture and success are emergent properties of the team members actions and interactions. Taking on Risk Up Front can get you there.

This book is well written and lays out what I need in a direct easy to follow way. Having worked in a few different companies, they all seemed to have their won language so I found there I'd fining of common terms to be quite helpful in helping to put everyone all on the same page . I plan to use this tool often and to share it with business associates to help strengthen their teams as well as my own.

Review

Newbery Medalist Creech touches on themes of loss, friendship, and belonging in this appealing tale. The book’s playful use of words sets this novel apart. Fans of Love That Dog will find much to love in this story of a girl, a cow, and so much more. (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))As Reena learns that a little kindness works wonders for both people and animals, Creech’s spare narrative creates vivid, emotion-packed images of landscapes, characters, and “that/ wild-eyed/ heifer,” Zora, that will stay with readers. (Publishers Weekly (starred review))Creech offers a memorable family story featuring an especially difficult cow… A heartfelt tale that will be embraced by Creech’s fans, work well as a classroom read-aloud, and find a spot in book groups. (School Library Journal (starred review))The quick pace and accessible narrative will win over reluctant readers, and it’s an easy pick for fans of Creech’s Love That Dog or animal lovers looking for a quick yet moo-ving read. This book was a very good short read. I am ten and would recommend it to anyone who wants a quick, deep book. It handles with loss and changes and teaches reader's that you should always look on the bright side. It is written in a very unique way , starting off more with poetry then getting into the longer chapters . I love this book and think you should too.

I must admit I have not read this book. My local library sent an email announcement about this book as something my 8 year old son might enjoy. I put a copy on hold and got one of the first copies to arrive. To say my son loved this book is putting it lightly. While he is a regular reader, this book lit a fire in him. He loved that he finished a "thick chapter book" and attributes his success (and willingness to even try to read such a "thick" book) to the short chapters. He said he hates stopping in the middle of a chapter and felt a great sense of accomplishment when he could finish a chapter-or two or three-in a sitting. He could not wait to read it after school, before bed, in the car. This book really kept him captivated. He like it so much he begged me to buy the book, which I did....He'll find out Christmas morning.

Sharon Creech fans will not be disappointed in this humorous & "moo-ving" story. Creech is a masterful & lyrical writer that tells the story of a family's move to Maine. They must overcome new challenges such as adapting to small town life & training of an ornery cow. Perfect middle grade read for fans of Love that Dog! I did find the story a little long & was thankful for the white-space to help break up the story!

I'm not the best person to review or rate any of Sharon Creech's books. You can just put me down for 5 stars every single time. Moo - a clever and heartwarming combination of prose and poetry. I only wish I'd gotten the paper copy to begin with - to put it on the shelf with the rest of my Creech favorites. Don't miss "Moo."

I thought that this book was good for many reasons. Dirt if all the author did a great job of illustrating the places the characters went. I liked this because it made me able to better create pictures even iMovies in my mind. The second reason I liked this book was because it was so unique. The characters were so different and unique in their own way. The last reason why I liked this book was that I loved to see the characters develop relationships with other characters. My favorite example was the relationship between Luke and Mrs. Falala. I loved how their relation ship grew and grew throughout the story. However I thought that the story was missing some things. I thought that the first thing that was missing was a second book. I think and other readers probably want to know what happens to Reena and Luke after Mrs. Falala passes away. Will they meet new people? Will Reena form a new relationship with and Beet? I thought that overall Moo is an amazing book for children to read. 10/10

A must read for any child that goes past a pasture of cows in their neighborhood. A sure read for any kid on a farm, and any 4H member. The ending is so well written and the ending dealing with death is part of any farm child's life. Wonderful book for any third to fourth grader. I also as an adult laughed at the animals and the children as they learned to get along together. GK

This book is fabulous. My daughter enjoyed reading it so much, she asked me to purchase a copy for her personal library! She is 10 years old.

Love this book. Sharon Creech is a master of middle grade voice. I have devoured all her books and she never ceases to amaze. This one is a quick read, but packed with emotion and memorable characters.

Building an Optimizing Compiler

From the Publisher

Building an Optimizing Compiler addresses this gap. It provides a high level design for a thorough optimizer, code generator, scheduler and register allocator for a generic modern RISC processor. In the process it addresses the small issues that have a long impact on the implementation. The book approaches this subject from a practical viewpoint. Theory is introduced where intuitive arguments are insufficient, however the theory is described in practical terms. A single running example is used throughout the book to illustrate the compilation process.

This book just has it all. As the title suggests, this book is all about compiler optimizations. Don't expect to find anything about lexical analysis or parsing here, but that is exactly why I like this book so much. It is aimed at people who are familiar with the basic structure of a compiler and with data structures and algorithms. The book describes the various phases the intermediate language of a compiler goes through before the final assembly or object file is written. It discusses such things as SSA form, lazy code motion and its application to load and store motion, scheduling, register allocation, etc. Important concepts, including (but not limited to) correctness, dominance, control dependence, and availability, are discussed and explained in detail. Algorithms and data flow equations are given with a proof and a clear explantaion. But this is not an algorithms cook book like Muchnick, the best part of this book is the synthesis of all the algorithms and ideas. There are only 3 drawbacks of this book. First of all, Morgan assumes that the target is a RISCy machine with a reasonably orthogonal register and instruction set. Second, the framework he presents is sometimes a bit unconventional. For example, his discussion about register allocation presents Chow&Hennesey priority bases graph coloring, but it forgets to give a proper comment on Chaitin/Briggs style coloring. Finally, the book exclusively describes intraprocedural optimizations. That said, the basic ideas presented in the book will give you enough references and back ground to understand the differences between Morgan's approach and other approaches to building optimizing compilers.

love love love..such a great book and amazing fotos!

Bought this for a close friend who absolutely loves it...

This magazine always bothered me, the size, the ads, the price... Phaidon did a great job with this book, I like it way better than the magazines. A bit pricey, but the book is way thicker and more impressive than I'd expected.

Okay, truth...my daughter is 10 and in the 5th grade. Grandpa, an avid reader like myself, went out on a limb and bought the book for her last Easter. We struggle to find books that are in her 8.4-9.5 reading level, have age appropriate content with a plot she has the life experiences to connect to and comprehend, that are also challenging AND interest her...tall order. We have read all the popular series - adore Harry Potter, of course; tore through the "Greggor the Overlander" series, etc. - so even though in previewing the series I noticed it contains some very minor-vanilla...no F-bombs or S$$T level, mature-type language, and there are a couple scenes that hint at an intimate relationship in book 2 (trying not to spoil books), I gave the book a green light. We started reading it together, taking turns reading aloud, and were BOTH immediately, read 30-40 pages at a time, wake up needing to see what happens to Celena, come home from school hoping to fit in a read and "see what Celena has gotten up to now" before dance, hooked like I have never seen her before!!! And while she is an awesome reader, she is not, by any means a sit & read person, preferring to dance, sing, socialize, game, etc...yet another challenge to add to the list. The challenged are important to note because the way Maas has crafted the characters has achieved what NO OTHER series has for my daughter, and that is to draw her in to the point she NEEDS to keep reading, every single day. The characters are beautifully developed to the point where my daughter was crying when she thought her favorite character died, and was angry at who did die. Maas has painstaking developed 3-dimensional characters that are ever evolving, and that are relatable to all ages. She has also created an entirely new setting that is similar enough to other books of the same genre, like Hunger Games (she has read/watched all), yet it is entirely new & fresh. The writing is clear & thought-provoking, and she weaves in asides & flashbacks that challenge and engage readers. We have had the most incredible conversations and my daughter has made multiple connections to other texts, movies, life, and especially music/song lyrics while reading. These connections are the reason I personally & professionally recommend the series to children beginning at age 10 who are reading at a 6.5-7+ grade level, primarily due to the challenging vocabulary. The twists and turns, the co afflicts & themes, character interactions, vivid & selected detailing, and obviously careful/thoughtful word choices make this series, in my opinion, an award winning, best selling series. As a reading specialist and 18 year veteran teacher of struggling readers, I fully give not just this book, but the entire series 5 stars! I could rave on and on...but I don't want to give away a single detail and only, sincerely hope what I have shared has piqued your curiosity enough to give the series a try yourself, along with a loved one, and that through sharing our personal experiences with the books I have helped answer the question of reader age appropriateness & interest level. Buckle up...it's a wild, wonderful ride through Adarlan!Added info for Book 2...Please note: I am reading the series aloud with my daughter, so as we go we just naturally, out of habit, change cuss words to "gosh" and "darn.," and the intimacy scenes were handled as follows: "A., this next chapter has Choal and Celeana interacting like a married couple sometimes do in private. Shall we read or skip?" Reply, "Well, um is it very like detailed?" Me: "Nah, it's pretty vague." A: "Well, I know she shouldn't be doing that stuff because they are not married, but let's just read it...it's not like I'm embarrassed or going to act like that myself...ewwww!" (Love the sweetness this age!) Basically, here is my point and yes I have one... if you take the time to first, preview what you will read with your child later; second, spend the time to read aloud with your child; third, talk to your child & maintain open dialogue, all the time, about everything, just as though they are the adults-in-training they really are (not saying talk like you are buddies, peers, or equals), the content of a fictional novel is not going to become controversial or be outrageous to them, throwing them into a tizzy of misadventure and exploits! So yes, while, the series is for ages 14+, I still maintain that WITH parental supervision/accompaniment, this is an incredible series to read together!

I believe I'm going to have a love-hate relationship with this series. I'm breezing through them rather quickly, and yet I'm not LOVING them the way I feel like I should. I recall hearing that this was "A Song of Fire and Ice for the younger set" and I was rather excited about that idea. It doesn't quite seem to be that, though. This novel was rather hard for me to read. It suffered from Second Book Syndrome - a lot going on and being explained and yet not a lot happening. I like the lore and fantasy elements that are coming into focus, however a lot of the elements felt messy and thrown together.I must admit that I'm also still rather indifferent when it comes to Celaena and Chaol. Celaena is still vain, shallow, selfish, and oddly unintelligent for the greatest assassin in the land. Chaol is increasingly annoying, ignorant, and pompous. Maybe they are made for each other. Or maybe they are a bit too much. I felt a bit like the romance really took over the novel. I wanted a lot more world building and just got a whole lot of romance.Really, it's the story of the past and the fantasy elements that are keeping my interest. I'm really hoping as more characters come into the picture, I'll have more stories to be interested in.

Well, holy cow. I don't even know where to start...This book. This series. These characters. THIS AUTHOR.We are in full on queen mode in Queen of Shadows, obviously. Hence the title. Calaena shows up some, for the sake of appearances, but she has completely accepted her heritage and now goes by Aelin. She's still the intense, no nonsense, scary-as-heck chick we've all grown to know and love, but there's tons more to her character that we only got a glimpse of in Heir of Fire. She's ready to go and taking names. Like literally taking names as she crosses the ocean back to Adarlan. Her cockiness and downright meanness in the first two books really rubbed me the wrong way at times. You can't help but to be drawn to her character, but the things she said and did were.. disturbing, to say the least. And she still has that fire, but there is so much more depth to her now that she has accepted who she truly is and, in the process, is opening her heart again to the people she loves instead of shutting them out and running off of pure rage. Her complexity makes her one of the best female protagonists I've ever read.We start out back in Rifthold, and at this point everything is up in the air. We know why she's there and who she's after, but how she's going to go about doing this is anyone's guess. I will say this, A LOT gets resolved in this book. Granted, there are plenty of other monumental surprises that step into take their place, but I was surprised by how many plot lines got tied up. I was expecting two for sure, but the third one threw me for a complete loop. If anyone says they predicted that to happen, they are a liar. And my goodness, these last two books are going to be downright scary. I was on pins and needles the entire time. You thought present Erilea was bad.. it's about to get wayyyy worse. And as for the book being 650 pages.. Why are people upset about this?! I say, the more the better! Now onto the other characters, because there are quite a few POVs in this book...I've always been partial to Dorian, so being in his POV was absolute torture. The ending of HoF about sent me over the edge and I didn't even want to think about what what was going to happen in this book. I was a nervous wreck. And then PAGE ONE happens. Like, literally as soon as I open the book, there it is. Chapter One. Pretty sure my heart dropped into my stomach. And then every time we were back in his POV after that. I did not handle it well. I hate Valg demons. And while I've never particularly liked Chaol's character (I know I'm in the minority here), he sort of takes on a whole new persona in QoS. Maybe it's the fact of what all he's given up and how he sees the world changing that makes him into the person he's become. He's always seemed to me like a guy who is scared of change, and has an incredible ability to pick and choose which parts of people to accept. And I'm not just talking about Aelin, but also the king and Dorian. He sees only what he wants to see, and if he doesn't understand it or like it, he just shuts it out completely. He doesn't like magic. He's scared of it. He's also very scared of what will happen if people with magic have free reign again. We've known this since Crown of Midnight so I'm not sure why his continuing dislike of it surprises anyone. Chao is not going to be the same person he's been for the first three books. His life has completely change, so while his character is infuriating to me at times, he's still a vital part of this story and I don't dislike him. His character, by the end of this book, grows leaps and bounds and I was glad to see it happen. Now for Rowan. Ah, Rowan. I still don't know how Sarah Maas did it. She gave us Dorian and Chaol in the first two books and everyone was on their respective team. Then in one book, ONE BOOK, she made me toss all my loyalties aside fall in love with Rowan's character. How anyone can not like him is beyond me. He's like the male version of Aelin, and the interaction between those two are some of the best dialogue of the book and they just work very well together. With his character showing up in Rifthold, you see him having to adjust to life without magic. And as the bond between them grows, you see different, softer sides of the Fae warrior. I love him.We didn't get too much from Aedion in this book apart from the first few chapters as he awaits his execution. His reunion with Aelin was everything I thought it would be.. I ain't ashamed to say I may have teared up a bit. They are the only bit of family each other has left and they totally had their moment. It was perfect.Manon's POV scares me. (Besides Abraxos, because who doesn't love Abraxos?) She is dark and wicked and infuriatingly loyal to that wretched grandmother of hers. I know she's redeemable, but for a good chunk of the book I was hoping Asterin would just overthrow her and become the new heir.. assuming that's how it works. Which it probably doesn't. BUT Manon has some feels going on that she's not even aware of and I think in this next book she will most definitely have to make a choice of which side she is on. It very well could've happened in this book, but we have no resolution where this is concerned. And that scene with Aelin.. on the edge of your seat stuff right there. I'm not sure how I feel about some illusions of her character, but I'm not completely against her playing an even bigger role in the last two books.I'm not even going to spend time on Arobynn because I hate him. But some of the other characters, I loved. Calaena has been surrounded by a troupe of men for far too long and it's about time the women came out to play and they did not disappoint! Lysandra, wow. Love her. So much more to her character than meets the eye, and her and Aelin's relationship was refreshing. Nesryn, even though we don't get anything from her perspective is also a pretty bad chick and helping Chaol with the rebels. It's safe to say, unless you're in denial, you will know why she's there from the get go. And lastly, Elide, Lady Marion's daughter, is brought into the picture and hanging with the witches, no less. Very much excited about what role she will be playing in the future. She's got some surprises in store, I think. For the most part, the book felt like long build-ups. Part one was a build-up and it was resolved. Part two also felt like a build-up, and it wasn't as cleanly resolved as the first. I still have some lingering questions about that. Prepare yourselves for part two. Big time game changer coming your way.AllI can say, is that if you truly love this series, and I mean disregard the romances and all that, and are in love with the story, this book will not disappoint. Some spoilers ahead...I'm going to rant just for a sec. I keep seeing some low to mid reviews on this book and they all have one thing in common: Chaol Westfall. I know people shipped Calaena and Chaol really hard, but being this distraught over the downfall of their romantic relationship does a disservice to this series. And I can say that because I am completely Team Dorian and have had to put up with Chaol from day on. Not to mention Sorscha from HoF. Was not a fan of that little surprise. Never once have I given these books bad reviews simply because things weren't happening the way I wanted them to. If the romance aspect is your biggest concern, go read romance novels. The growth and maturity of the characters is wonderful, and I'm glad that Maas is not scared to kill off characters we love or sever relationships if it means progressing the story to where it needs to go. I'm completely okay with the direction Aelin and Rowan are headed because they work. Even if in my heart of hearts I had this small hope of King Dorian and Queen Aelin falling love... yada yada yada... Rowan is the dude and I'm okay with that. So if all you're going to do is get on here and rant about, "I want the old Calaena back," "Maas completely ruined Chaol's character," "These books are too long," Guess what? Go read another series! Or some watered down YA novel where everything works out just as it should in the end. These books are gold. Sarah Maas is a genius. And you can't convince me otherwise.

This book is much more than I anticipated, it is filled with rich stories of gods and goddesses I never knew of beforehand, my favorites so far being, Lugus, and Etain. The author has been teaching the subject of Celtic mythology for over twenty years, needless to say he knows what he's talking about. Recommended to anyone interested in the Celts! I especially enjoy how the Author has consistently mentioned several places throughout Europe named after many of the ancient Celtic Gods and Goddesses.

This professor of Classics and Celtic Studies, Harvard-trained, brings a compendium of interwoven tales, from sources translated from a wide variety of his predecessors. The contents cover the earliest deities, the Book of Invasions, the Wooing of Etain, tales from the Tain and the Ulster Cycle, and stories from the Irish otherworld. Then, a few on Finn the outlaw, before the Mabinogi are related in four stories, followed by three more Welsh stories and sagas. Finally, Christian saints Patrick, Brigid, and Brendan gain attention in this slim, but accessible collection.A quick sample of the tone. Cu Chullain asks his charioteer: "Where on earth are we?" He replies: "'I have no idea, my lord.' He continues, "But I don't think we're in Ulster anymore." (125) Not Kansas either, but the everyday register of these stories makes them meaningful for us. Too often either scholarly versions are antiquated (if in public domain) or New Age-tinged florid reckonings divorced from academic rigor and narrative control. Professor Freeman stays grounded. It's lightly annotated with introductions and endnotes, clarifying where the texts originated and variants in meaning here and there. But the learning's worn lightly, for this volume is aimed at the general reader. While Irish-published resources remain, and predecessors such as Oxford's translation by Sioned Davies of the Mabinogi and Penguin's anthology of Irish themes by Jeffrey Gantz, the updated version of Philip Freeman's colloquial versions is welcome. I'd have liked Breton, Scots, Manx, and Cornish topics to widen the Celtic scope, however.
