I'm a teacher, I have been teaching for sixteen years. I have read many different books with the purpose of becoming a better teacher. However, I have never read a book like this one. It is so practical, and the principles are so easy to apply in the classroom.

This book has some great ideas and insights on effective classroom management. Our city's substitute teachers' meeting, which is held one night per month, even did a book study using this book to help all of us become more effective at managing a classroom and leading a lesson.

This book is a great read for teachers who teach because they want to make a difference in the lives of their students!

Good reminders: mainly to be positive, focus on what you can do to improve things, be respectful, care about your students first. You may not feel like it is groundbreaking but when you read it, but then it sticks with you. It is encouraging that some things that many good teachers do IS what we are supposed to be doing!

Gave this to a friend who is a great teacher (awarded teacher of the year) and she is going to present it at a meeting for other teachers. She said she even learned a lot from it.

This book is a great motivator. It is a reminder to what effective teachers do and it makes you feel positive that you can impact students lives and be effective. The strategies are nothing new, but it's more of a book to get you thinking about your teaching and how you can put yourself back into new teacher mode and really work hard to be effective!

Every time I read this book I improve my golf game a lot ! The book is not at all about stance, swing, distance , clubs or anything external to the game of golf. It's a book about getting your mind to believe you are good so that you will be good ! Has done wonders for my game , but I have to read it at least 2 times per season because we tend to forget golf is about what happens between your ears. Best book I've read about the game.

This is the best golf book ever written. It might sound hyperbolic but I mean. I should qualify that statement with a simple disclaimer: this in NOT a technical examination of the mechanics of hitting a golf ball (although the section about teaching beginners is brilliant). This is a book for people who already have a mountain of technical information between their ears, each little swing key competing with the last, sabotaging their natural ability to perform the athletic sequence of a golf swing. I'm still selling it short. This is a philosophy book. You know the old saying "he's his own worst enemy"? Welcome to the explanation. We have an analytical part of our brain that dominates our internal discourse. He is omnipresent and opinionated, and he often usurps control of functions that are perfectly suited to our instinctual selves. In other words, he tries to micromanage the very things he's unsuited for. The golf swing is a perfect example. This book teaches you how to give that analytical part of your brain something constructive to do, something for which he has real aptitude--awareness--and frees up the instinctive part of self to perform the complex actions he is perfectly suited for without the constant criticism and absurd expectations of the analytical self getting in the way. It will take time to condition the analytical self to his new roll. He will try to pop back up in the roll where he is least effective. This is great practice. He's easy to fool. Give him something useful to do and go back at it. You will play better golf than you've ever played in your life, and you will finally know how to enjoy the game without that destructive attachment to the outcome of every single shot that has ruined so many perfectly good rounds of golf.

This is a quite unique and valuable book, that emphasizes the mental game. It is unique in that the author is not a highly skilled golfer. His real forte is tennis, and his book on the inner game of tennis is what lead him to venture to the sport of golf. To summarize his approach, he emphasizes getting away from relying mainly on a myriad of mechanical thoughts, and instead on learning to trust your native abilities. He emphasizes things like relaxation techniques, ways of minimizing the excessive tension that afflicts all but the very finest players. (Although even the very best sometimes focus on the mechanical so much that excessive tension creeps into their games. A few years ago Justin Leonard was in the midst of a slump until he finally realized that his grip pressure had increased FOUR fold!) I will say that the first edition of this book went to extremes, practically claiming that no mechanical thoughts at all were needed. I believe that some of that naivety has been eliminated in this edition. The ideal has to be a blend of mechanical and mental aproaches to the swing. This book can help. His approach is a needed counterpoint to the excessively mechanical approach that the typical serious amateur player takes. 'Paralysis by analysis' is a real problem, and by addressing mental side of the game, and learning to TRUST the innate abilities our bodies have rather than trying to make everything happen, you can free up your swing and play with more confidence and less frustration. Is this book a panacea? No! You will have to work at these skills just like you work on your mechanics for them to become effective under pressure, but they do help if you stick with them.

If you occasionally shoot scratch golf but regularly play a 20 handicap this book will tell you what to THINK --- or NOT THINK --- in order to let your body do the job it needs to do to play great golf. Regularly.

I learned that to play golf well one must focus more on feelings than on the mechanics of one's swing. The Inner Game of Golftaught me to enhance my performance on the golf course by enjoying every aspect of my round. I learn from my mistakes instead of beating myself us over my mistakes. I discovered Rosemary Mahoney a year ago when I read Down the Nile and have been reading all her books since. She is now my favorite Travel Memoir writer! Mahoney has a way with words! She can describe a scene or a situation so well you feel you are there. If you love to travel, meet new people, experience other cultures, I highly recommend Rosemary's books. I very much enjoyed reading this book about small village life in Ireland. I've never been to Ireland, but hope to go there sometime soon.

While over 20 years old this is an engaging exploration of various women's "place" in Ireland AND also provides insight to rural Ireland along with Dublin. Of course I wonder how that decade of "Irish Tiger" may have impacted what was the case in mid-1990s.

Another fantastic book by Rosemary Mahoney I have read all her books. I love and enjoy all her books!

I've never been to Ireland, but after reading Rosemary Mahoney's splendidly eclectic tour of Irish women and Irish minds, I feel like I've had the next best experience to an extended stay on the Emerald Isle. Do not be fooled by the title, this book is not a narrowly conceived analysis of gender relations. Pay attention to the words "world of" because that is what Mahoney brings to life on every page of this highly readable work. Wow, does this author ever have the gift for developing sharply focused images that emit raw energy. She speaks with women, about their paradoxical relations with men, but also takes the risk of the literary "side trip," thus creating one of the most vivid sensations of "place" that you will find on the printed page. This is also a book of pubs, of warm and pungent Guiness poured by bartenders whose youth still haunts them, standing on stone floors worn down by storytellers and lovers of ages past. It's about foreboding castles and achingly beautiful landscapes. It's about women, where women can and always should struggle and perhaps prevail -- in the swirling context that bespeaks the joy and sorrow of life, of Ireland. Once reading this book, you may very well feel that you have to make the trip yourself, or even perhaps, that you already HAVE.

How can anyone spend a couple of years abroad, anywhere, and expect to portray an accurate historical account of the status of women in that country, let alone the entire people? She can't. So why are the reviewers expecting this book to be that impossible thing and to be unequivocally historically complete?This is an autobiography of the author's experience in Ireland, not a history of Ireland. This is Ms. Mahoney's journey, not Ireland's. Take it for what you will beyond that, because it is a compelling read with wonderfully imagined and experienced events. She is honest with her material while drawing out the poetic charm of her travels. She tracks several key political movements, such as the attempts to legalize a woman's right to seek counseling on abortion, through their late-80s specific events and leaders and in relation to the deeper built-in oppressions of Irish-Christian dogma. She does not come out and condemn anyone or anything, but leaves those opinions to the reader. She paints a picture of a country that is quite progressive in many ways, even electing their first woman president, but silently the culture continues to oppress women in ways that are not befitting a 20th (now 21st) century world.Too bad so many individuals misinterpret her work: If the people of Corofin and Dublin truly were "having their fun" with Ms. Mahoney by avoiding being honest with her in the hopes of making a fool out of her, frankly, they deserve to be caricatured. What a wonderful lesson in humility - a detail that speaks more about the state of a handful of men and women than any idealized cultural representation could have. When you have a guest to your house, do you mock them and make them out to be fools or do you welcome them and their cultural differences? I haven't really seen that before, except here and there to show a molecular structure or something. I appreciate this breakdown, as sometimes minerals and vitamins aren't always available or able to be taken, and this offers an understanding of which herbs contain selenium, for example. Great stuff.

I learned so much about the history of some of the middle east region as well as the current issues. But it read like a novel with well drawn,Well developed characters. The author inserted herself into the book in a very subtle and humble manner that felt authentic to the story. Parts of it were melodramatic and too tinged with her own strong feelings for the characters but I get why she has these feelings. Maybe it was a bit too much of a catharsis for the trouble the author experienced. I am nitpicking here, though. She is brave and honest. While she claims her work, writing about the middle east struggle, will never change the problem, I think she is being modest. This story needed to be told and likely affected the lives of many people. No one can fix the problems alone but she has surely done her part. My perception of the region has changed. This book is learning disguised as fun.

Excellent book about the woman reporter who goes to Syria to live with the Iraqi refugees that are there. Her experiences and writing is well worth the read for anyone interested in the Middle East and History that is happening today.

This book should be required reading for anyone drawn to thoughts of the glories of war. This is but one story of millions of civilians (and soldiers!) whose lives are forever destroyed or deeply scarred by absurd and senseless human warfare. Will it never end?

An eye-opening look at the aftermath of the Iraqi invasion and its effect on the civilian population. The author includes well-researched supporting citations.

Excellent story telling.
