I've had the book for several years and am finally throwing it out, along with the five different flour blends! The concept sounded so good - using a professional approach to gluten-free baking, and I was willing to purchase the ingredients and mix the various blends. Previous results have been frustrating, but I was willing to try again. Today, I really wanted a chocolate cake, so made the Devil's Food Cake from page 160. The batter tasted good, the cake is tender and looks beautiful and consistent throughout, but there is an off flavor left in my mouth that I can only attribute to using 2 teaspoons of baking soda to less than 1/2 cup of flour blend. It seemed like a lot when I was measuring ingredients, but I followed the recipe precisely. Only after tasting the baked product did I start to investigate and compare. Each serving contains 660 mg of sodium according to the nutritional information. This is two to three times as much as other cake recipes that use baking soda/powder for leavening. Chef Coppedge, I ate at CIA restaurants several years ago, and the food was very nice. Please revisit this book, do LOTS of testing so the recipes are clear whether weighing OR measuring ingredients, and then perhaps re-publish. Until then, if anyone is interested in a Gluten Free baking book, please consider Artisanal Gluten-Free Cooking by Kelli and Peter Bronski, and The How can It Be Gluten Free Cookbook by America's Test Kitchen. Both contain clear, tested and delicious recipes that are consistently successful.

So far I've baked the Linzer Cookies, Devil's Food Cake and brownies, with great results that exceeded all other recipes and pre-made box mixes, Except for the Devil's Food cake. The cookies came out tender and delicious and I'd be hard pressed to discern the difference between these and ones made with a gluten recipe. However, the recipe only makes about 10 sandwiches, so must be doubled or quadrupled.I set aside a day and baked 4 different brownie recipes/mixes to compare the results. I baked a box mix from King Arthur Flour, box mix by Hodgson Mill, America Test Kitchen Brownie Recipe from their book "The How Can It Be Gluten Free Cookbook #1", and one from this book. By far the recipe from this book was the best. The brownies held together, had an excellent flavor and texture, and didn't gum up ('too fudgey"). The America's Test Kitchen recipe came in as a close second, and were easier to make because you only have one flour mixture to pre-make, but the flavor and texture weren't as good. The box mixes were both so bad, there is no comparison.]I repeated efforts with the Devils food cake, but this recipe came in 3rd (and the cake size is 6 inches-what's up with that. First place was the Chocolate Layer Cake in America's Test Kitchen book mentioned above. Truly a delicious cake with great texture. 2nd place was a mix by King Arthur, and with frosting this would be an acceptable option (King Arthur Gluten Free Chocolate Cake Mix, 22 Oz)There are 5 flour mixtures in this book to pre-mix, and many recipes use a combination of the flour mixtures for each recipe. For example the brownies used 2 Tble of flour mixture #1 and 1/4C of flour mixture #4 ; the Linzer cookies only used flour mixture 2; the cake used flour mix #3 (1.75 oz) plus 1 Tble of Flour #1 (I substituted because it was used for dusting the pan). So there is an investment in making up the different flour mixtures, but I think it's worth it if I continue to get the results I have thus far. Very pleased.

I am a baker by choice, and suddenly, I was presented with a major lifestyle overhaul when both my son and I were diagnosed with gluten and casein sensitivities. This prompted the purchase of this and other books.I'm not crazy about the five blends of flour needed to produce baked goods (other books I purchased offered very similar resultant products with far less flour blend and ultimately, far lesser cost). For an experienced baker, it presented the need for extreme patience in reading and flour blending. The book does, however, have many recipes worth replicating (my favorite recipe in the entire book is the mock rye, which is now our go-to bread in the house). Just note that if baking gluten free is new to you, there are other choices in Kindle books and online blogs, which you might find far less intimidating for the first time gluten free baker.The book is GREAT for exploring the technical nature of closely replicating baked goods and I learned a lot. However, I think I might have been influenced by it being a CIA selection into thinking it would be friendlier than it is.

I learned a lot from baking with this book, but from a practical standpoint it is dated and there are better references out there.The recipes are hit-and-miss in a big way. Some turn out average (Irish soda bread, cheese balls, bagels). Some take finesse to get good results consistently (peanut butter fudge brownies). And then there are some doozies, such as the sticky cinnamon buns and lean bread, which should be avoided at all cost.If you are looking for a simple cookbook, the recipes do not stand up to ATK’s “The How Can It Be Gluten Free Cookbook”, for example. However, it is not irrelevant from a reference standpoint because I have found the information in this book useful when modifying or creating new recipes.

John Williams demonstrates his clear command of the topic by the amount of research he puts into it. Literally, any mention of Liverpool FC in the newspaper during the first 50 years or so is in there. He's very strong in building the club's "ancient" history, but after World War II, he condenses a lot of information into relatively quick summaries of each of the managers. The beginning and ending of the book are like night and day in regards to how much detail is in there. Clearly, as he admits in his introduction, he gives a favorable amount of space to the beginnings of the club because of the lack of knowledge of this period. However, as an American fan just learning about the club, I would like to know more about Shankly and Paisely and the "boot room" then how much tickets were in 1912. Those seem more relative to the modern team. It makes the first half a little tedious because he nearly goes season by season while describing big games and the pros and cons of different signings. In the second half, the part I was really interested in learning about, he moves at lightspeed, clearing a decade in a matter of pages. The most famous example in the 1977 Champions League final. After describing a failing seasons final game in the 1920's during the first half, Williams virtual ignores the entire 1977 UEFA Final. He gives no attention to the game itself and offers only a page and a half describing how a bunch of fans made the trek to Rome. He does give a fair amount of explanation to the Heysel and Hillborough disasters and the circumstances leading up to them. All in all, as a history professor, I applaud him on his detail for the early years, but was a disappointed to the lack of such detail for the final 40 years. A good read overall.

My boyfriend is a huge Liverpool fan, and this has made a beautiful addition to our coffee table. He hasn't finished reading it yet, but it is a really nice quality hardcover that we will definitely pass on to our future generations of red fans also. Great purchase!

Enjoyable, quick read. Recommended for any fan of the Reds, or just anyone who is generally curious about the history of England's finest football club.

This is a great history of the club for any fans of Liverpool FC or football fans in general. It goes all the way back before the formation of the league, to the founding of Everton FC and the Liverpool split, through two world wars, and all the highs and lows of the club over the years in between. If you've always wondered why so many people around the world love Liverpool FC, this book will give you an idea why.

Good book, a little stodgy in the early going, but a good biography nonetheless. You can tell Williams is a fan, even though the book is impartial.

There is nothing like the history of Liverpool. In this book you'll find all of it. It is a must read for long time fans and newcomers that want to learn more about the rich history of a fantastic football club

Great book. Very informative. Spends much of the book talking about the early history of the club,but I would have liked it to spend more time on the latter half of the century. The early history has great facts, but the writing gets a little repetitive at times. Good,solid book. A very informative summa of the clubs culture and history.

Original 08/31/13Great book that is well organized. Tons of useful information for all the hikes. Hike difficulty ratings are fairly accurate.Update 05/21/14My friend and I have now done about 15 hikes in this book so I thought I'd provide an update. We map all the hikes using MapMyRun app. Recently we realized the total trail mileage per hike is often accurate but the intermediate mileage from point A to point B along the trail is frequently wrong. Recommend you match up the book diagram to the gps tracking diagram on your cell phone to see if you miss a turn or not.Best trails in order are below. In general all the best trails seem to be south of STL. Highly recommend all the ones below for the fall. Pictures with changing leaf colors were spectacular from the lookout points.1. Green Rock Trail2. Pickle Springs Natural Area - Trail Through Time3. Pere Marquette State Park4. Hawn State Park

This is our go-to book for choosing hikes within the St. Louis area. Originally checked it out from the library and used it so often we bought the updated version on Amazon. There are a variety of hikes listed for hikers of all skill level. Makes you appreciate all the beauty this area has to offerUPDATE: I've now owned this book for a bit and have had a chance to really utilize it. The descriptions for the hikes are pretty accurate considering when the last update was and now. I have found a few of the areas to have additional hikes or some of the trails that once had generic names have been named. These are minor details though. Directions listed to get to the trailheads, parks, natural areas and conservation areas are accurate. In some cases, they are better to use than your GPS.I like to make notes after I hike a trail or an area, so I do wish there was a blank page or two included with each chapter so that trail and area notes could be made. In addition, when the book is updated, it would be great to have a website or something online linked to the book.I still consider this the best hiking book for the St. Louis and surrounding areas. If you live in the STL area and love hiking, this is a must have for your collection or anyone you know who loves to hike. It's given me an appreciation for where I live and what the area has to offer.Please note, I have updated my star rating to a 4 from a 5 due to some of the things I wish were different about the book.

We have used the older version of this book many times over the years. We misplaced it, and I got my husband this new edition for Christmas. I'm sure this one will get lots of use as well.

Lots of the right kind of details.

This book is a great resource for those in the Saint Louis area. I've been hiking around this area for 15-20 years and still hadn't known about many of the hikes listed in this guide. After reading a new post highlighting the Atlantic Review, in which Anne-Marie Slaughter and her book, "Unfinished Business" were highlighted, I bought three as Christmas gifts for my adult children. I have not personally read the book but like the message from it in the Atlantic Review and agree the topic is majorly important and vital beginning now.I was a stay at home Mom as I raised my children and I am now a caretaker of their Grandmom. She is a few weeks away from 96 years old.During her younger era of care taking, a stigma did not seem to be attached to the women at home. It was common. There was one however, once the children were raised and a middle aged woman having given up work outside the home, tried to get employment. It was heartbreaking for me to see as a young woman with an older Mom trying to "become viable."When she had always been viable. Sadly, I have faced that as well. Generations later along with many others.For too many years, caregivers have had to master a silence at judgements toward them.It is time voices do become heard and value put on people that do make their loved ones a priority through birth, health, sickness and death. No matter your gender.

I loved this book. I had expected it to simply be an extension of Slaughter's Atlantic article a few years back, but it's so much more than that. Yes, it does cover strategies for making work and family "fit" (a better term than the time-worn "balance"). It also expands on the themes of how both workplace practices and societal norms need to change in order to make the dual pursuits of having a career and raising a family more viable.But it goes well beyond these (important) themes to explore how both women and men need to think differently about their careers and families going forward... in part because the "traditional workplace" is becoming as outdated as the typewriter, and in part because our priorities have started to get seriously out of whack. Millennials are starting to want something different and, with the advent of technology that can transform the work-place, they have a tremendous opportunity to achieve it.Along the way, some seriously interesting topics get explored. How young women need a different career path approach in an era where life expectancies are headed north of 100. How spouses/partners need a plan to make it all work, even though life will inevitably get in the way. How men who take the lead parenting plunge are likely to run up against (and need to prevail against) outdated cultural biases. How the language we use is incredibly important to achieving gender equality in the workplace. How big business has no incentive to change traditional work formats... until flexible models start winning the war for talent. How workplace solutions need to be across the socio-economic spectrum. And how society as a whole needs to "revalue caregiving".Does Slaughter have all the answers? No, but she does have some great ideas, from disruptive technologies to legislative priorities to personal approaches. The point is to get the dialogue started. And having now given the book to my two daughters, it has in my house...

Great discussion of something that needed to be said. I have watched for many years as friends and loved ones, one after the other, lost their realistic chances for job advances or tenure to meet the needs, some even minimally, of their families. She also considers the plight of the woman who suffers the same losses to care for aging parents. It's time this country's corporate administration, en masse, gets its collective head out the 1960's sand and fixed this problem. This author does an excellent job of covering this topic WITHOUT BASHING MEN and it's definitely worth a read.

Everyone should read this - young and old! So much personal stress and unhappiness could be avoided it we could lessen these gender role issues and improve our parenting. Since personal stress is created, in part, by the way employers treat their employees, and stress in employment is created by unhappy employees, changing things is a no-brainer. But there are too many people entrenched in the old ways of thinking, causing personal and societal problems. This is a must read, right up there with "Being Mortal," on a very different topic.

If you liked Lean In, this is a necessary reading. Addressing the same issue, it offers a different perspective. Mrs Slaugther advocates for a new take on care and child rearing, in which they are given as much importance as getting to the C-Suite. You might agree with her (or not), but in any event, it is food for thought in the ever-lasting subject of women’s challenges in the workplace.

This is a counter argument to Sandberg's "Lean In"; although both authors are similar on the surface. Slaughter argues for change on the part of society rather than the individual. Truth is both will be needed.

Used for a gender studies class. I am not a working mother but I could understand the dynamics women feel needing to be viewed as a hard worker and a good parent. This book is very informative and interesting. Kept my attention. After reading I lent it to a friend. She enjoyed it as well.

I don't think I can finish this book. It caught my eye in the Christian bookstore and since I recently lost my dog, I thought it might be helpful. What I am finding is very little about his dog and more long preachy paragraphs about things that just seem to randomly come to his mind. Many long bible quotes and he seems to go off on tangents. Something I found rather objectionable was his first dog, Charlie, I believe his name was, was left to be put down by his wife while he was out of town. I skipped thru to the chapter titled "Good-bye", and I see once again, he said he knew Hannah was dying and he'd never see her again, but what did he do? He left town again for work, left his dog to die without him. I really can't get past that. He put work before the dog he claims meant so much to him.I tried to pick this book up and continue reading but it's just more preaching of his random thoughts. I feel like his dog is an afterthought, like he's trying to fit her life into an already perceived notion of a book and he needed her to make it sound legitimate, because who wants a book full of his random preachy thoughts.......no one.

I’m often suspicious of biographies. Most of the time I wonder how well the author got to know the subject of the biography. Did they get to interview the subject personally? Was the subject completely honest with the biographer? Does the biographer have an agenda or viewpoint that contradicts with the real story?I don’t have any of those concerns regarding Dave Burchett’s new book, Stay: Lessons My Dogs Taught Me About Life, Loss, and Grace. Though Dave is writing about Hannah, and later Maggie, he’s telling their story from his perspective – that of a best friend. Because Hannah and Maggie are man’s best friend – dogs. Dave has written what I think is the best biography of an animal as told from a human viewpoint that I’ve ever read.I’ve not stopped thinking about what the vet said after giving Dave the emotional news of a terminal diagnosis for this beloved furry friend. The doctor explained that Hannah didn’t know she had cancer and would live each remaining day with all the life she had in her. “Dogs have no fear of death, so they live in the moment. Enjoy each moment that you have.” What began Dave’s journey of observing and learning from Hannah has the potential to shake you to the core of how you live life. The lessons he learned along the way are for all of us.The freedom and grace Dave discovered through the months that remained for Hannah will shatter your view of rules, legalistic morality, anger, and even death. It’s not a fun story. I knew what was going to happened to Hannah, yet I still cried as Dave recounted the end of Hannah’s life.Initially that was the end of the book. But, in the way that God always gets the last laugh, there would be more to the story. Maggie. A new rescue dog. An opportunity for Dave to teach someone else the lessons of forgiveness and joy he had learned from Hannah. Could a dog eager to destroy some good furniture and quick to hide in shame learn about unconditional love? Could a wild animal discover freedom on a leash?This is a book of humor, faith, the path of loss, and the journey of rediscovering joy. I never learned those lessons from the fish, lizards, and hermit crabs we had as pets. It’s only been with dogs that I’ve experienced those same lessons. Dogs have something to teach us. *spoilers**Dave Burchett, leads us on a story of goodness and grace through the life he leads with his dogs, but mostly with his best life friend, Hannah, a golden retriever, the dog his family had during one of the lowest times of their life.When Burchett’s wife was diagnosed with cancer, he started a journal. The book is written from the first person, and as journal entries I loved that about the book. This book was fantastic.During Joni’s cancer treatments, Hannah stayed by their side and seems to “read” her owners behaviors and their love. Giving them some comfort and peace during each treatment and after her surgery. Then sweet Hannah was diagnosed with cancer.They chose a course of treatment that would only make Hannah comfortable and keep her out of pain.During those next few months they saw a lifetime of love, and grace in the way that Hannah lived her life. Putting their needs first. Hannah lived in the moment and was free. One of the best quotes in the book was when the vet told them this “dogs don’t fear death, they live in the moment”After Hannah’s illness took her, Dave thought he would never be able to love again, however, when he saw sweet Savannah’s face, he fell in love.When they brought Savannah home, they knew that her name was too close to Hannah’s so they eventually changed her name to Maggie. In doing so they learned that Maggie, didn’t really realize her name well. When they enrolled Maggie in obedience class, they learned the things she needed. In doing so they learned Maggie needed a leader, someone to take her and tell her yes, no, sit, stay, the commands in every dog’s life, as well as teach her to walk on a leash and guide.Dave took each lesson that he learned and related it back to the Bible with a timely Bible verse, or story from the Bible and this book became a lesson, literally on grace, and humility. Love, loss and learning.Learning from your dog is a very gracious thing because of what they can teach you. Turning that back and about Jesus Christ and how much He sacrificed for us.What a blessing this book was for me. While I love my dog with all my heart and they are treated basically like royalty in my home, I was able to see that every day they give us everything they have every minute of their life.God gives us everything we have, we just have to accept it. What a graceful life lesson this book is. I highly urge you to read it. Read it with your Bible in hand and get a great Bible study as well as just a great read!
